Say Goodbye to County’s Matching Federal Dollars For Transit. By Geniusofdespair

The Miami Herald reported today that Facing a July 31 deadline to submit a key application to federal transit regulators, county commissioners refuse to raise fares or taxes to prop up the transit system. Reported by Larry Lebowitz:

The county is facing a July 31 deadline to submit a financial plan to the Federal Transit Administration if it wants to compete for $700 million in matching construction funds for the 9.5-mile North Corridor extension up Northwest 27th Avenue through the heart of the black community to the Broward County border.

Commissioner Barbara Jordan, whose district includes the North Corridor, said commissioners agreed to submit a plan to the Federal Transit Administration -- even though they refused to adopt any of the controversial or expensive items in it.

''The repercussions of missing the federal cycle are pretty grim,'' Assistant County Manager Ysela Llort said.

And:

“County leaders will have to tell the public that they cannot keep the core promises of the half-cent sales tax that voters approved in 2002 ...” Commissioner Dennis Moss said.

You can also say goodbye to the North-South rail leg we were promised for years.

The crooks refused to raise any costs to we taxpayers not because they care one whit about us, but because with an election coming up we may not like the raise in taxes and vote the wrong way for them.

They are not all crooks. We do an inservice to the ones up there who are really trying to make things work. Let's not lump them all into one barrel.

Low tech transit solutions that serve all residents, continuing to attract and protect jobs, stopping sprawl are all good things.

People are hurting and higher transit fairs would be a hardship.

When (and if) the patient is allowed to heal, the symptoms will subside.

They don't want term limits on the ballot. It's about time we use the ballot to limit their term.

We didn't say they were all crooks....the county is one big mass of bloated dysfunction. It is too big and the commissioner (not all of them) are beholden to special interests which complicates the problem. Lobbyist rule -- nothing can "heal itself" continuing with the status quo and business as usual...we need a county lobotomy. We need to lop something off...
