The nation's chief nuclear watchdog will tour Turkey Point on Tuesday, according to The Miami Herald. "A visit from the chairman is not an ordinary occurrence." The report, however, oddly omits reference to the planned new nuclear reactors at the facility, and a highly controversial licensing process at the start of next year. The Herald reports the nation's top nuclear regulator is concerned about a series of safety violations at the FPL facility that have generated monetary fines and reports of staffing problems.
If I were a betting person, I would guess the NRC top dogs wanted to scope out what challenges lay ahead in building two new reactors at Turkey Point: like where is the material for the fill pad going to come from, and, the water for cooling. In other words, let's visit Turkey Point before the shit hits the fan. I hope someone remembers to tell them that the water they are looking out at, is Biscayne National Park. Capital letters. And, think that FPL has staffing problems today? Wait until sea level rise puts most of South Dade under water: who is going to foot the bill for servicing if not decommissioning those reactors expected to cost more than $15 billion if they are ever built. That cost-- that you and I will be forced to pay in our monthly utility bill-- does not include any change orders the will be required, either of the FPL facility or the public roadways and ancilliary infrastructure, as sea level rise takes hold.

Well I agree with all of it except the water issue. The game plan there is reuse water from closing the ocean outfall pipes. That's a good thing, expect for Dade's moronic insistence to go Reverse Osmosis and have such a HUGE carbon footprint that it negates the carbon savings of a nuclear facility.
The Sea Change that's coming makes the nuclear and RO investments untenable - ironic how Seijas makes the motion to accept the Climate Task Force recommendations then turns around immediately and takes actions that undermine it with her UBD - take your children to work shenanigans.
Building for growth is just not viable. It's gonna be really, really, ugly here (worse than the evening news during Katrina) when the BIG ONE hits.
If done correctly, nuclear power is not only cost-effective but vital to energy independence. Can FPL deliver? That's a big if.
Why is ex county manager and lobbyist for developers Steve Shivers having a fundraiser for Mayor Alvarez next week? I'm disappointed in the Mayor for even considering taking money from Shivers and his cronies, like Michael Latterner, Bob Epling and Wayne Rosen. Something very stinky going on there!!
It appears, politicians take money from anyone. They take money from me for instance.
