Miami Dade Caught Short by Geniusofdespair

No big news today in the Herald so you get shorts (I even had to turn to the Sun Sentinel):

What do you do with a dump?
(This wasn't in the Herald, so don't look for it there.) North Miami Councilman Scott Galvin is asking the city council to approve $6,500.00 for the survey of the 12-13 acres of land that the city owns in the area of the former landfill to create the Arch Creek East Environmental Preserve. I think that is a good idea as long as the area is safe for people. DERM are you doing your job?

What do you with sewer water?
And I also think what Jose Lopez said in the Sun Sentinel yesterday is a good idea. Broward cities test ways to recycle sewage into usable -- even drinkable -- water. Jose Lopez, lead project manager for the South Florida Water Management District's Broward Service Center said:

"This is a way to make sure when the population grows that you are providing the service people will require."

Jose, I know it is the wave of the future, but next time we run into each other, I want to see you drink some recycled sewage water. The population isn’t as far along with this notion as they should be, me included.

Panhandling at the Carnival Performing Arts Center

The Miami Herald did a pretty good editorial Reviving urban core but it didn’t go far enough.

There needs to be a police presence and then the panhandling would not be an issue. If you walk a block from the facility, on dark streets either South or North, there are no police. Note to Police Chief Timoney: You only need them there for an hour before and an hour after a show. Need I remind you of the decline of Bicentennial Park (throat slit incident). And, what about the decline of the Omni Mall? It was great when it opened.

I think it prudent to be proactive before some unfortunate incident turns people away. You have been lucky so far. Besides I have tickets for a performance the end of the month. As I said in a previous post, I walk everywhere, I am not afraid of panhandlers, but I would not walk under that overpass between Bicentennial Park and the PAC at night without a police presence.

Why are there police everywhere at AA Arena during events? Are they paying for more police? Is the PAC too cheap? What is deal with the difference? There has to be a least 10 officers outside Heat games.

Have you seen the article on Timoney in the latest issue of New Yorker magazine?

No is it good?

It's largely sympathetic. He comes across as a tough-talking, gets- things-done career cop who turned an undisciplined, even murderous, NYPD and MPD around. It focuses alot on his two kids, who have apparently had more than a few drug-related brushes with the law -victims of their father's devotion to his job. Only one paragraph on the civil rights abuses / violations during the FTAA.
