Dangerous by design: Is Crandon Boulevard the most dangerous bike route in America? … by gimleteye

Another cyclist fatality on Crandon Boulevard. The danger to cyclists makes Crandon Boulevard one of the most dangerous routes in the US. When you design a city and county for cars alone, and cyclists are funneled into the city's one roadway with waterfront scenic interest for riders, it's an inevitable result. For the past four years, Florida holds the distinction of holding the four most dangerous cities in America for pedestrian. FYI, Miami is ranked number four.

Cyclists are well organized in Miami. They ought to mount a protest like one never seen before. How about a protest ride circling County Hall or in successive weeks, around the blocks where your Miami-Dade County Commissioners live?

I drive on Red Road which recently had a bicycle lane installed. As US1 is approached from the south, the stencil of the bicycle on the pavement veers from having it's own space to becoming one of the two lanes of traffic. My car drives over the stencil where bicycles have to suddenly merge into traffic. It's an ominous point that seems to predict where a car will be hitting a bicyclist.

And this was planned bike route.

Not to take away from your point, but our problems are a bit more complex.
Many times I have also seen aggressive cyclists act like they own the road. One come to mind; about a year ago, I witness an incident with a car just ahead of mine.
A peloton of cyclist went past my car at a pretty good clip. A while later, I came upon them aggressively taunting and gesturing at what looked like a family in a car; the family looked like tourists.
Most cyclists a are pretty cool, but just like drivers, there are some who are complete jerks.

Very misguided idea encourage bicycles on roads with speed limits 45mph and greater. Any lane departure results in a death.
