Most disgusting fish caught this week ... by gimleteye

Bow fisherman Brent Crawford stalked then arrowed this monster alligator gar near his Lake Corpus Christi home. The entire ordeal spanned nearly two hours, including an episode involving Crawford's wrapping the line around his wrist after shooting the fish with a bow and arrow and nearly being dragged deep into the canal -- only to be saved by his dog. Finally he shot the fish dead with a pistol. The Texas way.

I never heard of an alligator gar. That's a big ugly fish. Crawford cut the fish up for steaks. I would have tested it for mercury first, but what the hell. You hunt fish with bow and arrow and pistol, you get to put a little mercury under your hat band, too. Yee-haw.

Hell, I'd rather live in Georgia than tied to an alligator gar in Florida.

A bad day fishing for alligator gar is better than the best day shooting sheetrock with a nail gun.

Ross Hancock Running for Fresen's Seat. By Geniusofdespair

Every election cycle one candidate seems to turn up a lot in my thoughts. This cycle it is Ross Hancock. He is a Democrat running against Erik Fresen. I don't think he is raising much money. He tells me he is walking his district. I will take his word for that. Ross, it is raining today, go out and walk!

He seems to be a good guy, I don't really know him well but hey, he has got to be better than Fresen. Allen West is the only one I can think of who is not better than Fresen. If you live in District 114 be sure to vote for Ross Hancock: Democrat, happy, good hearted guy from Coral Gables who declares his independence from:

Lobbyist-driven policies
Nonsense social issues
Wasteful partisanship
Outsider casino interests
Intrusion on local government

Text of my speech to Romney retreat at Deer Valley this weekend ... by gimleteye

Mitt Romney is meeting in a closed door retreat at Utah's Deer Valley this weekend. The GOP's top donors will be there, along with luminaries including Jeb! Bush. I was asked to stand-in for Marco Rubio who will be at home in West Miami with his family. Here is the text of my speech.

"Hi. I'm a liberal blogger from Miami, Florida. Go, Heat. I hear the Mormon Tabernacle broke into song when we won. (Wait for applause.) We beat Oklahoma. The only state dumber than Oklahoma is Kansas.

Marco Rubio couldn't be here this weekend, so I'm here to help bring in the Hispanic vote. (Wait, applause.) You call it "Latino". Tom-A-to, tom-ah-to? Let's ask a waiter.

Thanks for inviting me to Park City, Utah, really. What an honor to address you today. (Find Mitt Romney in the crowd, pat heart.) Mitt, you are a very generous guy to be inviting an environmentalist.

I'm usually here only in ski season when you can wear green and people won't give you a second look. (If no laughter, stick a pencil in nostril.)

It is a different kind of green going on, here. (Point and 'I heart you' to Charles and David Koch in audience.)

I'm talking about money. Your money. Heck, there are more private jets on the tarmac at SLC than during that Robert Redford film festival down the road. You know, the one in Park City where all the Hollywood types raise money for the whales and have unprotected sex. (No laughter, stick pencil in second nostril.) Raise your hand if you think we should have federal funding for condom distribution at the Sundance Film Festival!

I'm not here to sell you on my candidate who happens to be President of the United States. (If no applause, remove pencils from nostrils.)

Don't spend a billion dollars on political TV commercials, my friends. All you are going to do is make Karl Rove richer. Give Karl your jet to ride home. (Point to Karl in audience.) How did you get out here, Karl? Horse and buggy? (If no applause, use the following.)

Hey, did you hear about the environmental regulation that got away? ... I didn't either.

Help lift us out of this race to the bottom. You know as well as I do that presidents can't create jobs. George W. Bush couldn't do it. Jeb Bush certainly couldn't do it in Florida. (Wave to Jeb! in the audience. Don't overdo it.)

And Mitt, god bless a man named "Mitt", can't.

So take your billion dollars and help build bridges to all the people you've left behind. It has to pay more interest than you are getting from the bank, unless of course you ARE the bank and borrowing from the Fed at zero and lending at seven percent. With a deal like that, why change horses?

Anyhow, enjoy your weekend here at Park City. I haven't been invited to stay for the other sessions but I will be keeping this badge to remind me of spending quality time looking over the devastated economy from high above. So adios, amigos.

I have a flight to catch. Southwest, not Netjets.

June 26th: Respond to FPL. By Geniusofdespair

I got this message from Philip Stoddard and wanted to share it with our readers:

Please help get the word out to have people attend the Public Service Commission on proposed rate hikes that will take place in Miami, this Tuesday, June 26th. The PSC will hold a public meeting 9:00 am at the Dade County Auditorium, 2901 West Flagler St, and a second meeting 4:00 pm at Florida Memorial College, 15800 NW 42nd Ave, Miami Gardens.

FPL seeks a 16% rate increase

FPL is asking Florida’s Public Service Commission (FPSC) for a 16% rate increase, nearly all of which will go to increase the rate of return to their corporate shareholders. FPL insists the increase will only cost us rate payers a percent or two, because their increase to the base rate will be offset by dropping fuel charges. Forget that logic: those fuel savings belong to us, the rate payers. Our FPL bills have two parts, the base rate and the fuel charge, so the fuel cost is passed through straight to the rate payers. If the cost of fuel goes up, we pay more; if it goes down, we pay less. Very simple – the cost of fuel is independent of the base rate.

It's about their profits, not your service

FPL will squeak and squeak about how they need the money to provide good service. But the requested rate increase is very close to the percentage they want to increase profits to shareholders. Here's a link to an article about FPL's earnings being up 39% – yet FPL has the audacity to ask for higher rates to provide higher return on equity to shareholders.

Cost of FPL rate increase to South Miami’s economy

I calculate that the base rate increase will cost South Miami’s residents and businesses $1.7 million a year, none of which will come back to improve our service. FPL already gets “pass-throughs” to charge us directly for storm recovery and storm reserves. This $1.7 million would be extracted from our economy every year to benefit FPL’s shareholders. In fact, the stock price of their parent company, Next Era Energy (NYSE: NEE) has already risen 15% in anticipation that the rate case will be approved. FPL reminds us that they have among the lowest rates in Florida. Terrific. Let’s keep it that way. In a final bid for sympathy to their rate increase request, FPL’s government representative told me that utilities do go bankrupt. Hmm. Not as often as cities.

Another twist of the screw

Through the Nuclear Cost Recovery pass-through, FPL’s rate payers are already paying $3 billion up front to “uprate” FPL’s nuclear reactors at Turkey Point and St. Lucy, enabling them to generate 15% more power with the same fuel from the same 40 year old reactor vessels. We deserve the reward on our capital investment and risk. Instead, FPL’s shareholders currently get to charge us 11.25% on our investment, and now FPL is asking to INCREASE the amount we pay their shareholders for the capital we gave them. If that sounds completely preposterous, it is. That’s what happens when a Wall Street monopoly buys Tallahassee.

And the ultimate injury to South Miami, the issue that put FPL in the dog house to begin with…

US 1 transmission lines

FPL has stonewalled South Miami’s request that FPL bear the full $21 million cost of burying their proposed 230 kV transmission lines on South Miami’s US 1. Our economic study estimated those transmission lines, if built above ground, will destroy $28.5 million in South Miami property values, cost $21.6 million annually in lost wages, and cost us $1.73 million in annual property taxes. And that’s on top of the extra $1.7 million FPL will take from us every year they get their requested rate increase. Let us not forget the greatly elevated incidence of childhood leukemia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other senile dementias reported among people living near transmission lines.

South Miami and Pinecrest are legally intervening in the rate case to oppose it, and we expect several other cities to join us. Several cities have passed resolutions opposing the rate increase. AARP and S Fl Hospital association have also Intervened. But...

The PSC MUST hear from the public!

So please show up on Tuesday and let the PSC know what you think about FPL's proposed rate increase. Bring a friend and email 5 more.

Under Governor Rick Scott, pollution enforcement implodes ... by gimleteye

The $890 million deal between the state and federal government to fix the Everglades shifts permitting authority of polluters to the state and away from the federal EPA. As we noted last week, Marco Rubio has taken up a similar charge in the US Senate with a bill to knee-cap EPA's ability to protect Florida's water from ongoing pollution.

So how is that likely to work out: giving the state permitting authority in the Everglades? Here is a timely (very) answer from an organization that supports public employee whistle-blowers: "Pollution Enforcement Implodes Under Florida's Scott." (Thomas Frank, columnist for Harper's Magazine, writes an excellent editorial following up on his "What's The Matter With Kansas?", noting the ways that the extraordinary political hysteria by an ultra-conservative GOP is being exported to other states, prominently Florida. He is right.)

Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility News Release (www.peer.org):

POLLUTION ENFORCEMENT IMPLODES UNDER FLORIDA’S SCOTT — Big Drop in Cases and Fines as DEP Staff Instructed to Avoid Enforcement

Tallahassee — Basic enforcement of anti-pollution laws in Florida has nose-dived during the first full year of Governor Rick Scott’s tenure, according to agency figures released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). Dramatic declines in the number of cases brought and amounts of fines levied across virtually all districts and all forms of pollution appear to reflect directives that state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) staff should avoid pursuing enforcement if at all possible. Democracy has a right to life! 2012 Elections calendar ... by gimleteye

Aug. 14 - Miami Dade elections

Aug. 27-30 - Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida

Sept. 4-6 - Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina

Oct. 3 - Presidential debate at University of Denver in Denver

Oct. 11 - Vice presidential debate at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky

Oct. 16 - Presidential debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York

Oct. 22 - Presidential debate at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida

Nov. 6 - Election Day

The Nation has a good link to the Jon Stewart "Daily Show" pieces on voter suppression in Florida.

The mainstream media should focus on the important dual role of voter suppression and manipulation of absentee ballots. As EOM has pointed out repeatedly, absentee ballots make the difference in Miami-Dade. Couple that with voter suppression, and you have deformed democracy. That's just wrong. Democracy has a right to life, too.

Gregg Allman: You scared me half to death. by Geniusofdespair

Wasn't quite what I was expecting when I saw him on TV the other day, I nearly fell out of my chair.  Getting old is a harsh reality. Can't say that Super Model Janet Dickinson did much better than Greg Allman. Enjoy your good fortune if you are a looker, but don't think it will last forever. Humility while you have them and then acceptance when looks fade is something to strive for.

A note to Michelle Spence-Jones' on Jobs, Jobs, Jobs. By Geniusodespair

City of Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones mantra has been jobs for her district. I do applaud that effort but the woman should learn from County Commissioner Barbara Jordan who also clamored for jobs before approving the Marlin's Stadium.  When the jobs for the stadium were finally advertised for a job fair they specified "bilingual." Jordan had a cow when she found out. They took the requirement out of the advertising but we all know it was still there -- hush, hush now.

In my November 16, 2011 post I suggested requiring applicants to be taught "Job Specific Spanish" so our under-employed have a chance. For example, my sister was a nurse at Jackson. She knew enough Spanish to do her job, no more. People didn't ask her for the aisle to find leche or for driving directions. In my post I said:

"The Black commissioners who voted for the stadium let the Marlins' screw their community twice over: 1) Pay for the Stadium, it will provide jobs 2) Just not for you. The Commissioners could have asked how many jobs would be bilingual before approving the deal."

So Michelle Spence-Jones, my advice to you is to be more specific on language requirements when people promise jobs. Ask them, are they willing to teach people in your district "Job Specific Spanish" rather than requiring applicants to be bilingual? As I said in my 2011 post, people rarely ask you probing questions at a ballpark. You can almost get by knowing Spanish questions and answers such as: Where are my seats? Popcorn? Where is the bathroom? Where do I Exit?  Michelle, get smart, be specific or they will just eliminate a large portion of your district even though they make you a promise.  To bolster your cause Michelle be aware, in many starter jobs, many of the bilingual hires speak very little English -- they only know job specific English.  Don't believe me? Try to get driving directions in English from a waitress/cashier/store clerk in Hialeah.

Marco Rubio will not meet with climate change scientists ... by gimleteye

The Economist has a cover story this week on global warming. It is timely. A massive heat wave is gripping the nation on the first day of summer. Last night on network news a farmer was interviewed in his corn field in Iowa, saying he'd never seen conditions like this in June. The story reminded me that climate change deniers like US senator Marco Rubio have gotten a free-pass onto the VP list from GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

In February 2010, the future senator Rubio promised Dr. Harold Wanless, chair of the Department of Geologic Sciences at the University of Miami, that he would respond to a hand-delivered invitation to meet with a group of scientists on climate change. Rubio never responded. Dr. Wanless' invitation:

Dear Mr. Rubio,
I have become aware that recently you have taken a position doubting the reality of human-induced global warming and all of the very serious implications. In November, 2007, I briefly met you (as you passed through the lunch area) when I was speaking in Tallahassee at a legislative ‘Symposium on the Science and Economics of Climate Change.’ In our conversation, you communicated that climate change was real and serious and that there was so much money to be made. I enjoyed your response and have used it in many talks since to encourage business persons to take action.

I am now disconcerted that you now question the whole thing. You were quoted in the Tampa Tribune newspaper as saying that there was not enough scientific evidence to justify ‘man-made global warming”. I understand that there is presently an abundance of misleading information and numerous persons pushing a personal agenda. A number of us have been asked to write op-eds in response. I prefer education first. I would like to invite you to visit with a group of highly respected climate and sea level scientists at the University of Miami sometime this spring when you are in Miami. I will arrange a 2-3 hour meeting that will combine 3-5 short presentations along with an informal discussion.

The reality is that human-induced global warming is thoroughly real and the Earth is responding at rates not anticipated just a few years ago. Critical to Florida, the Greenland Ice Sheet, portions of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and some of its outlet glaciers, and Arctic summer sea ice are melting at accelerating rates, far ahead of any earlier models or projections. This puts Florida, the State you wish to represent and the most vulnerable State to sea level rise, at extreme risk for severe changes much earlier in this century than previously anticipated.

It is most critical that Florida have legislative representatives that understand this reality of climate change that so aggressively lies in front of us all – so they can lead the nation in initiating truly meaningful changes that will curtail global warming and reduce the level of greenhouse gasses in Earth’s atmosphere. I am aware that climate change has not been popular among certain groups in the past, but that is changing. Our future leadership must not discount or delay what is the most critical and difficult challenge that humanity must face up to early in this century.

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
Harold R. Wanless, Professor and Chair
Department of Geological Sciences
Why did Rubio blow off Dr. Wanless' invitation? Part of the reason could be that in 2001 Dr. Wanless was a vocal critic of the Jeb Bush plan to proliferate the contamination of drinking water supplies around the state through a technology called "aquifer storage and recovery". Marco Rubio does not turn his gaze without Jeb Bush first blessing it.

Wanless testified before the Florida legislature and wrote to Governor Bush: "This is not an environmental issue; this is a resource issue. The people of Florida have entrusted you to protect our resources. Every effort should be made to protect our fresh groundwater resources from degradation. It is simply our most valuable resource and one we must pass on to future generations as undamaged as possible. This resource will diminish over the next century in response to anticipated sea level rise. It must be the highest priority of the Governor and Legislators to cherish and protect our fresh groundwater resource. Examine and respect the guidance that the National Research Council (CROGEE Report) and other non-partisan professional groups have given to this question."

But Bush did not examine or listen to scientists. And he especially did not listen to environmentalists. It was his way, or, the highway. Dig it, dump it, drink it. Pay as you go? That's the power of, nope.

The Economist report final paragraph: "In the end, the world is likely to get a grip on global warming. The survival instinct demands it. But it is likely to lose a lot of the unique Arctic first. That would be a terrible pity."

The problem is that crop cycles, on which the planet's food supply depends, could be severely disrupted by rapid climate change. Were this to happen the impacts would be far more severe than pity can mitigate.

We need leadership from Congress, but don't look in Marco Rubio's direction. He will be cultivating voters in West Dade where charismatic Christians believe that twelve foot dinosaurs built the pyramids.

Miami Herald Blurs the Line Between Editorial And News Reports with Marc Caputo. By Geniusofdespair

Above the name of Fred Grimm it says "In my opinion,"  clearly informing us that he is writing an editorial. The next column over on the NEWS page, Marc Caputo continues his long running love fest with Marco Rubio. Caputo is writing editorials under a news banner. Shame on you Miami Herald for blurring the Editorial-News line. You must be impartial in news reports or be clear that you are presenting an editorial.

American Airlines: making life difficult one dog at a time ... by gimleteye

In the summertime, traveling from Miami with a dog as checked baggage is a trying experience. American Airlines is one of the few to allow pets to be checked. I know because I've done it for fifteen years.

Until a few days ago, the big issue in Miami was temperature. American won't allow pets to fly as checked baggage if the temperature is above 85 degrees. Fair enough.

This requirement is why my wife and I woke up at 4:45 AM the other day, to fly to Boston on a 7:30 AM flight, leaving enough time for assembling a cage at the check-in, dealing with TSA (visual inspection of cage to ensure it won't blow up and of dog, to make sure it is not strapped with explosives), and then negotiating the security line ourselves.

For our large retriever, we have always paid the extra cargo charge. But this time ...

Allen West Gets His Campaign Money From the Retired. By Geniusofdespair

James Barr of Wood River Illinois, Clinton Basey of Silver Lakes Oregon, Thomas Berryman of Ashland Kansas, Charles Blackwell of Claypool Arizona, Darryl Brown of Lexington Kentucky, Phillip Brown of Atlanta Georgia, Thaddeus Buda of Lansing Michigan, Charles Bunner of Fairmont West Virginia, Barbara Busse of Mukwonago Wisconsin and Walter Byers of Emmett Kansas all have a few things in common.

Their last names all begin with 'B', they are all retired and they all gave to the candidate Allen West. Charles Bunner gave $10 in the last report ($211 overall).

It is like all these old people are making monthly payments on their Chevy, except their Chevy is Allen West. I would say less than 10% of his money is coming from within his district. How did all these people from mostly God-forsaken little towns find West? I only looked at the A's and the B's and let me tell you I did a lot of scrolling. West's report is 1,633 pages.

From 1/1/2012 through 3/31/2012 West collected $1,812,151.71. In the election cycle to date he has collected $7,659,686.83.

Running against West is Democrat Patrick Murphy (there is a second Democrat Jim Horn, who only has $5,000 so I won't discuss him this post). Did Murphy follow West in West's change of district or are the records not up to date? The report "Friends of Patrick Murphy" is 160 pages. Murphy collected $350,556.24 1/1/2012 through 3/31/2012. To date he has collected $1,768,390.88. Maybe 60% of his contributions are from Florida donors including Charlie Crist and wife Carole. And, Murphy's report isn't bankrolled by retirees, many of his donors hold down jobs. I think we should deduct Social Security monies from people who give to Allen West. After all, they are T Bagger people and I am sure they don't believe in welfare for the aged...except, of course, for themselves.

I wonder what the Koch brothers are doing for West? He is their dream candidate.  I hope he loses so much so that I might put some bucks against him.  I have just so much money to donate, and I am mostly giving to local County races but I might also do Obama and Murphy. I wish I had more money to dole out. Think about giving for good government...or at least tolerable government.

A few odds and ends ... by gimleteye

Good to hear that Jim Defede is going to host a Sunday news talk show on CBS4. I rarely watch the local or national Sunday morning news shows. Invited guests and their well-rehearsed talking points compel me in other directions. But when I do stick around, I am struck my the timidity of hosts who stay to a more or less scripted format.

Defede did a predictable, yawn of an interview with Senator Marco Rubio, during the recent flurry of interest related to his possible inclusion on a Romney ticket. Maybe that's what gave the CBS executives confidence he is their man. I miss Defede's outstanding work for Miami New Times. His investigations disclosed the fiasco of the Homestead Air Force Base/ HABDI deal lead me on a seven year odyssey to defeat the proposed $10 billion boondoggle.

Defede didn't fit the Herald. Herald executives, brutally focused on the bottom line, wanted to 'offend no advertisers'. On television news, from time to time Defede has done excellent investigative reports. He understands Miami's pain. Whether he will be allowed to expose it or just be another fair-minded arbiter of talking points tied to the half hour format's four poster bed: we'll see.

There is no news about Parrot Jungle that surprises Eyeonmiami. We derided the $40 million boondoggle approved by the city and county from the start. In Miami Dade, stuff (ie. what is funded by taxpayers) slips away by the tens of millions. Parrot Jungle has plenty of company; the beat goes on. The question arises, why can't Miami civic and business leaders come to terms with an urban grid that makes no sense, before putting billions of dollars of investment in the wrong places? Parrot Jungle out on Watson Island was insanity. Who goes there? Now the owner wants more concessions in order to off-load his debt to an anonymous investor.

Mayor Regaldo told the Miami Herald, "the fundamental problem is that their business plan isn't viable." Thank you, Mayor Regalado.

To me, it is as viable as Donald Trump putting a movie studio down at the Homestead Air Force Base, next to the baseball stadium that never attracted a viable business. Or the Homestead Race Track that lined someone's pockets with tens of millions. Wonders never cease in these parts, do they?

A student from Mast Academy, Avalon Hoek Spaans, wrote me out of the blue. She is a senior and president of Mast Academy's environmental club. Avalon objects to the effort by Key Biscayne residents to turn Mast from magnet high school off of Biscayne Bay, focusing on maritime and environmental issues, into a larger, general high school serving the Key. "I am not emailing you to pick sides on the political part of this issue; I am emailing you as a fellow environmentalist who is not only concerned about my schools future, but the future of the habitat and the environment surrounding Mast Academy." Well, I am picking sides.

I say, leave the school alone. It is a rare gem in Miami-Dade County. I propose converting the government buildings recently constructed on Key Biscayne into a high school. Let the politicians work out of mobile trailers in the Parrot Jungle parking lot. The City of Key Biscayne could hold public meetings with the parrots on bikes on a high wire going back and forth. Why not?

This could be a good topic for TV host Cristina Saralegui. But the Hispanic Oprah is going to busy as spokesperson for President Obama's election. Thanks for your note, Avalon Hoek Spaans. I'm picking up the phone now: smong Miami audiences, only Cristina has higher ratings than Eyeonmiami. We're working on bringing the Key Biscayne trauma to Cristina's attention. Happy Monday, Mitt. (The Washington Post is doing excerpts from Manuel Roig-Franzia's "The Rise of Marco Rubio". The Senator who still will not meet with climate change scientists.)

Erik Fresen Should Pay Up or Resign...How Dare He Run Again? By Geniusofdespair

Don't you hate those thumbs up?
The Miami Herald reported that Erik Fresen has a $1,500 outstanding fine for campaign report irregularities from 2004. The statute of limitations has kicked in but we the voters can hold him accountable.  Linda Robison, a State Ethics Commissioner, said:

"Any elected official who owes a fine and doesn't pay ought to be embarrassed about it."

Are we going to let him off the hook? Make Erik Fresen pay up before you consider him. When he comes to your door (LOL) or you are at a debate in District 114, ask him why he didn't pay that $1,500 fine from 2004. Also ask him if he ever responded to the August 2011 Audit Letter he got from the Department of State. Ask him for a copy of his response to the State.
