My Soap Box Today: The Marlins' require bilingual applicants at job fair. By Geniusofdespar

Juan C. Martinez, the Marlins’ director of multicultural marketing, acknowledged that with the team’s Spanish-speaking base, seeking out bilingual job candidates this week was a priority. The job fair’s website said the same Tuesday morning. - Miami Herald

We are ALL paying for the stadium Juan! I thought it interesting that the Marlins' Job Fair participants were required to be bilingual and that doesn't  include CREOLE. That eliminates large segments of our Miami Dade County population. Commissioner Barbara Jordan rather than just commenting against the practice, in the Herald today, should have gone down there and watched the show and beat her drum. Because they took bilingual off their website doesn't mean it will change the policy. The Black commissioners who voted for the stadium let the Marlins' screw their community twice over: 1) Pay for the Stadium, it will provide jobs 2) Just not for you. The Commissioners could have asked how many jobs would be bilingual before approving the deal. I bet most jobs are part-time too. Did we ask about that ahead of time County Commissioners?

Spanish is not taught in the early years in the schools which hurts the non-Hispanic students' chances of learning Spanish and some Haitians are already trying to master English. Have the Marlins and the Commissioners ever heard of Job Spanish? I don't speak Spanish but I held a job for a year in Puerto Rico because I learned the words I would need at that job. People rarely ask you probing questions at a ballpark:

Where are my seats?
Popcorn?
Where is the bathroom?
Where is the Exit?

You don't have to be bilingual for most jobs within the stadium. Give the hires a Spanish class for the vocabulary they are likely to encounter. My sister knows nurse Spanish... I know bar Spanish -- it is done all the time. Some of these supposedly 'bilingual' people in stores and in other places in Miami hardly have a grasp on English. In Doral I had to ask 3 people at a McDonald's for 'decaffeinated' coffee.  Let's try to help everyone work not just some segments of the population.

I like the idea of "JOB" Spanish. It make sense to help some of our friends in the community get jobs.

I, as you, have encounters hundreds of people working in grocery stores, restaurant and shops at Dadeland that do not speak enough English to be understood. But if I stick to the basics we can communicate. El bano por favor.

Discriminatory hiring practices against English only speakers in the United States? French was my second language in High School - guess I won't get a job with the Marlins, which my tax dollars pay for!

I hope this turns in to a class action suit so the rest of the Country can continue to laugh at our banana republic!

I will give my usual response:

This stinks.

Why don't they offer Spanish in the public schools from kindergarten on? They offer Spanish at all grade levels to Spanish speakers.

Did you mean they offer English at all grade levels?

just wondering how many current Miami Gardens Marlins employees will be transferred?
Yeah right!

dade bilingual means you speak spanish and know some english words

if you speak english as a primary language and are applying for a bilingual job, you're wasting your time

The whites don't want these low paying, part-time jobs anyway. They can all go to work in Broward where English is appreciated. I go to Marlin games and Heat games. The bulk of the audience at both are not Hispanic so I don't know what this guy is talking about. Half the audiences for both commute from Broward.

Suitcase open, clothes all folded. Waiting for gambling to be approved, then I'm closing up and moving out.

That's it, recall the whole commission for allowing the Marlins to do this. What is Braman's number? Crap, does he speak english?

It is getting more difficult to make it as a non-hispanic in Dade. When a person can't speak enough english to know I want $40 on pump 4, or a number 2 on the micky d's value menu, you know you're in trouble. You can't even hold up 2 fingers and point at the picture of a quarter pounder meal, without "que"

Who do you think they built the stadium for? White non-hispanics? No! African Americans? Double No! The Marlins Stadium was built for our large Hispanic population, played by a mostly Hispanic team, with and an occasional tolerance for those non-Hispanic politicians that allowed this boondoggle to happen in the first place. Face it, if you're not Hispanic, YEEEER OUT!

First Rule of Business: KNOW YOUR CUSTOMERS!

It is was it is folks, and it ain't ever going to go back to the days of ol' Miamah.

So your choice is, adapt or move.

Know your customer? Half the people if not more at the games are not Hispanic. But then there is hardly anyone there to begin with.

So, what else is new? Haven't you all noticed that Whites or Blacks in Miami mean nothing?

I am sick of it.

Homestead Housing Authority Board has 5 Mexicans out of 6 members appointed by Bateman who is White, Mexican Ex Dir with no qualifications hired over Blacks, Whites with more qualifications for the position than this man could ever imagine!

And now the Marlins? Did these people ever hear of discrimination?

Stadium built for Hispanics, better paying stadium jobs for Hispanics, and the Blacks, Haitian and one White commissioner go along with that?

Even the Black commissioners don't fight for them? We should remember this when elections come around. They don't look after Blacks and Whites so why should Blacks and Whites vote for them? And let me remind you, Blacks live in every district, not only Liberty City or Overtown as you might think.

Some of you might forget, but I guarantee, I will remember!

Adapt or move? How about my idea, teach job seekers Spanish for the job. Then they can stay right here.

I want my brothers and sisters who have moved here from Haiti to have a fair chance for a job. Everyone needs work no matter their language...and everyone is my brother and sister!

AHHH all this english/spanish bitching and moaning brings back great memories of Enos Schera and Citizens for Dade United, what a lovely bunch.

Though I was born here and I'd say my Ingles is half decent Mr. Schera and his seedy band of bigots made me feel mucho unwelcomed.

Should have never built that damn stadium on taxpayer dime in the first place, Thank You Carlos Alavrez!

In the end Miami is a city of non stop immigration, can't say it doesn't get on my nerves every now and then but where else can a Cuban have his sandwich and eat it too? Not in Peoria.

What is wrong with using English?

I think that if countries around the world think it important enough to teach it to their kids... that we could manage to have our own communities speak it here in the US.

I speak some Spanish... and I understand it... but I should not go into a shoe store in cutler ridge and have a sales person have to go get the manager to translate because I asked to purchase stockings and her English was so poor she had no idea what I was asking for.

You live here...learn English. I learned Spanish because I traveled to Central America. I did not ask them learn English because I was visiting.

How do you say, "I wouldn't buy a Marlins ticket or merchandise if my life depended upon it" in Spanish?

Does this mean I get a rebate on my portion of county funds?

Somebody get Shirley Gibson on the line. She's going to be pissed.

to the semi literate spanish anon some people don't have the luxury of time, they get here in their 30s 40s and 50s and go straight to work some will learn more english than others depending on their capacity (At least the lady at the store where you encountered difficulty has a FRIGGIN JOB) depending on their ability to learn which is not equal amongst humans both english and spanish speakers. Comprende?
This has all detracted from the point that in any language the Stadium is a Boondoggle.

Cervantes,
What about at least requiring that those workers who speak Spanish learn 'job' English?

I'm a native English speaker who is fairly fluent in Spanish, because I studied and thought it was important.

But when I go to a gas station or Publix or McD's and the person working doesn't speak English, I don't make it easy for them. I speak to them in only English, make them get someone who can help me, and refuse to speak to those who aren't even making an effort in English.

The only reasoning for bilingual employees are those who have to deal directly with the public, but office employees, maintenance, security guards - they should not have to speak English.

I am a Cuban, bilingual, but I am fair - we are in the United States and English is our official language.

The Marlins Stadium can offer English only speakers a simple course in Spanish phrases, like what you would learn when you travel to a foreign country and vice-versa for Spanish-speakers to know some simple English, but other than that, I agree that there should be various jobs that a variety of people can fill (some may not speak only English, some may speak only Spanish, some may be bilingual 33.3% - that would be fair).

I think we all should study languages. And not only languages, but also culture and customs. Then we can build stronger relations between us.
By refusing to speak in Spanish you are not helping the assimilation of the immigrants. Neither do they if they refuse to speak in English.

I think this would all be solved if we all just refused to speak to each other PERIOD. Think of all the books you can read, TV shows you can watch and Video games you can play unpertubed by meaningless banter and small talk.

Do what you want, marlins, but don't take public money. If you do, expect us to piss and moan when you discriminate. Live and let live, except when you take country welfare. Then the rules should change. Screw you.
