Absentee Ballot Fraud and Mark Bell's Freudian Slip. By Geniusofdespair

It was on the front page of the Miami Herald that Bell's team is accused of absentee ballot fraud. I have a name of ANOTHER woman who is alleging similar charges and have supplied her name to Penny Townsley who in turn said she turned it over to the State's Attorney's Office to follow up. Anyway back to Mark Bell's Slip:

“What I think is happening is Mr. Milton is upset because our team is gathering ABs,” Bell said. He quickly corrected himself. “Not gathering them, you know what I mean, but talking to voters.”

It is illegal to GATHER absentee ballots. Mark Bell is dumb enough to say that. Remember: Lynda Bell won her seat by Absentee Ballots. Are you scratching your head now to imagine how she did it?

The Plumber's Assistant Mark Bell has raised $93,315 thanks to his wife. By Geniusofdespair

Would you take a campaign donation from someone connected to this - Havana Palms? The developers got $350,000 in public funds to do it too! Mark Bell took 3 donations from the developer.
I will call Bell a hotel owner when the hotel makes some money.  I am told this $93,315 raised by the Bell's is the most raised in any Homestead election.  I am also told he has just as much PAC money.

Looks like he finally got Alger farms.  Of course, more from developer Wayne Rosen and Steve Torices - Atlantic Civil (Rock Miner).

Most important: Bell got and ACCEPTED more from Duarte Viera. Anibal Duarte-Viera is accused of renovating and selling the now condemned 19 units in Little Havana.  Sosa and Heyman were outraged at the developer and wanted to seek justice on behalf of the homeowners.  According to  sources Heyman was contacted to speak about Anibel Duarte Viera but the man was told by Heyman's Chief of Staff the County Attorney advised her not to talk about him (I would suppose because legal avenues are being considered).  So even though the Commissioners aren't talking, the Bell's are flippantly taking money from the same guy the county is considering legal action against.  Let's face it money to Mark Bell is money to Lynda Bell. From the Miami Herald:

Miami-Dade County commissioners expressed outrage Tuesday (June) about two real estate developers who received more than $350,000 in public funds after selling ostensibly renovated but rapidly crumbling condominiums to low-income families in Little Havana.

Commissioners said they would seek legal ways to hold the developers accountable for selling the units in the Havana Palms complex.

“We need to make sure that we hold people responsible,” said Commissioner Rebeca Sosa at Tuesday’s meeting. “There has to be protection for the residents and for the peoples’ money.”

The commission unanimously approved a resolution to convert into grants the zero-to-low-interest loans of seven families who had received county aid to buy the condos in 2006 and 2007.

The county has not figured out how to recover the money from developers Anibal Duarte-Viera and Gabriel De la Campa, who in 2006 converted the 60-year-old complex to condos. Through Montara Land Company V, LLC., the developers sold 19 of the 32 units from 2006 to 2011.

Would you take money from Anibal Duarte-Viera? Mark Bell did 10/11/2013 ($500) and more in August ($500). Rebeca Sosa: Do you know about this???

Harvard Business School, Joe Lassiter, and Gimleteye: New nuclear must be part of the energy solution ... by gimleteye

There is a great divide between my enthusiastic support for Lassiter's position on new nuclear with my vehement opposition to new nuclear at Turkey Point by FPL. It is simple to explain.

My chief objection to new nuclear at Turkey Point -- besides being "old" nuclear according to Lassiter's analysis -- is that within the service lifetime of the two planned reactors -- to cost ratepayers more than $20 billion -- , sea level rise will present massive challenges to the survivability of FPL's rate base in Florida. Because of Turkey Point's location in low-lying flood plains -- the most vulnerable in the continental United States -- FPL should be planning to DECOMMISSION Turkey Point now, not spending hundreds of millions in (profitable) fruitless activities related to the expansion of nuclear, there.

What is even more irritating is that the ratepayers of Florida, thanks to the Florida legislature and its radical extremists, are required to fund the expansion through early cost recovery provisions that allow FPL and its key executives to handsomely profit by triggering this costly chase down the rabbit hole. The entire decision tree, including local government and lobbyists, profit mightily from the misdirection of public policies while sending environmentalists chasing in frantic circles. There ought to be a law and there ought to be enforcement ...

On the other hand, as Lassiter points out, the macro world energy economy cannot -- as many mainstream environmentalists claim -- survive by so-called sustainable sources of energy like wind or solar. On demand electricity means just that. Industrial societies like ours demand electricity and will not surrender its availability.

This means replacing coal-fired power at scale. The only source capable of instantly helping is natural gas. But fracking doesn't solve global warming problems: it delays the reckoning.

As Lassiter proposed, a massive public investment in new nuclear technologies belongs front and center in the energy mix. While I understand the comments made by many critics of Lassiter's article in the Harvard Business School press interview (read, below), just go to Alton Road at high tide today, park your car in the salt water rising above knee height, and realize that what is at risk with our indecision is everything that "works" now.

The Case for Combating Climate Change with Nuclear Power and Fracking

Joseph B. Lassiter explains why he believes that nuclear power and shale gas are on the right side of the fight against climate change, and why markets have a better shot at winning the fight than governments do.
by Carmen Nobel

If you ask any given environmentalist to identify the biggest threat to the planet, you may expect to hear about man-made climate change, consumerism, or overpopulation. But if you ask Harvard Business School's Joseph B. Lassiter, he'll toss in another: single-issue myopia...

BREAKING NEWS: Absentee Ballot Fraud in Homestead by Bell Supporters. By Geniusofdespair

There are allegations from a voter that a volunteer marked Mark Bell and Norman Hodge on her ballot when she wanted Jeff Porter and Jimmie Williams. 3 more ballots involved - illegally taken from home.

Here is the scoop from Jimmie Williams. Big supporters of Jimmy Williams, running in seat 4, said volunteers came into their home and filled out their 4 ballots. The homeowners told the volunteers they wanted Jeff Porter and Jimmie Williams. The volunteers took 3 of the ballots with them, the voter (niece?) wouldn't give them her ballot. The one they left behind was marked with Mark Bell and Norman Hodge. That voter did not want Mark Bell or Norman Hodge.

Note from Elections Supervisor Penny Townsley:

I have confirmed that the State Attorney's Office is aware of the accusations.

Absentee Ballot Voting is, and continues to be, a convenient and safe way to vote. The Department has policies and procedures to properly handle absentee ballots, including a thorough authentication of the voter’s signature on the envelope. Our voters can further protect their right to vote by:
Keeping their absentee ballot between the voter and the Elections Department
Not giving their ballot to anyone who is not authorized (Genius: A candidate is not authorized or a candidate's representative)
Making sure that the absentee ballot is properly signed before returning the ballot
Ensuring the ballot is received by the Elections Department no later than 7:00 pm on Election Night
Maintaining a current signature on file with the Elections Department
It has never been easier to return a completed absentee ballot directly to the Elections Department now that no postage is necessary for countywide elections.
If someone observes illegal or unethical behavior, we encourage them to contact the State Attorney’s Public Corruption Hotline at 305-547-3300 and the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust Hotline at 786-314-9560.

Who is watching the Store? By Guest Blogger Aesop

I went to Katy Sorenson's panel discussion Public Corruption -- When will it stop? I got this review on it this morning on who is watching out for us:

Willy Ferrer - US Attorneys Office:
He introduce himself as the progeny of Cuban exiles.  Then he explained how tight he was with Katherine Fernandez Rundle, saying “We couldn’t have a better relationship”.  I have heard from friends in the US Attorneys Office that the place has become politicized over the past few years, compared to before when any bad guy would be prosecuted just for being bad.  The tone of an organization is set at the top, and today I saw who sets that tone.

Howard Rosen - Assistant State Attorney:
He explained how the SAO selects cases to pursue based on where the penalties will be the highest, not on the level of damage the various offenses inflict on the public trust.

Joe Centorino - Ethics Commissioner:
I heard Joe Centorino uncloak his feelings toward the bloggers who persistently complain that connected individuals get special treatment in Miami-Dade County. (Genius: It is true Joe, remember Joe Martinez's house - nothing happened. All my complaints get close-out memos. Nothing more.)

To Joe’s credit, he ever so tactfully noted the damage Mayor Carlos Gimenez made to local anti-corruption efforts by gutting the County PD’s Public Corruption Unit.

I heard the speakers frantically shred and compost an attendee’s observation that many people are discouraged at how connected individuals get special treatment in which the law is reinterpreted to let them off or the statute of limitations expires while prosecutors doodle. The fellow mentioned David Rivera

Notably present in the audience was North Miami Mayor Lucy Tondreau of North Miami, who assigns herself a police driver because residents have threatened to storm city hall over corrupt practices (such as assigning herself a police driver), and who improperly used forfeiture funds to pay for the chief of police to escort her on her recent vacation to Haiti.  Nothing she heard today will interfere with her sleep tonight.

Conspicuously absent from the event were any elected official from Miami-Dade County or the City of Miami, anyone from the County Mayor’s Office, the five sitting Commissioners of the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust (four of whom are currently said to be under investigation), ASO Public Corruption prosecutors Jose Arojo and Johnette Hardeman, and  Katherine Fernandez Rundle.

The Urban Development Boundary line is being threatened again. There is a petition to open up over 96 acres of green space that buffers the Everglades from development inside the UDB to allow retail and businesses. The Planning Advisory Board will be voting on whether or not to move forward on this issue.

Planning Advisory Board (PAB) meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 21st at 2 p.m.  We need you to be there to urge the Planning Advisory Board to reject expansion. Help us send one clear message: We do not want sprawl; we want smart, environmentally sensitive planning.  This meeting will be held at The Government Center at the commission chambers. If you can not attend, please email the Planning Advisory Board with your comments to reject the expansion.  Their contact information is below:

What's your natural citizenship? Take this easy test! ... by gimleteye

An entity called SREDA, The Independent Testing Service, offers an online choice test that uses answers to simple questions to suggest which nation best defines your preferences.

I took the test and learned I would fit best in Iceland. Iceland? Land of Bjork and a thousand icicles?

Well. I liked Greenland this summer and blogged from there. Does that count?

On the other hand, with rising temperatures at the door, Iceland might just be the place. Click on the link, above, and share the results in our comment section.

In Wall Street Journal, extraordinary admissions of failure by business leaders in its sole source practices with GOP ... by gimleteye

One of the first rules of business is: be very careful about single-sourcing suppliers.

While it is not a mystery why American business leaders did single-source their politics to the GOP -- low taxes, battling regulation -- , it is a mystery why few anticipated catastrophic failure. (The GOP hasn't blamed environmental regulations for its crisis yet, but it will.) American business leaders need to take a long hard look in the mirror, as they evaluate their return on investment with the GOP.

By single-sourcing, American business leaders allowed themselves to be persuaded that the echo chamber would deliver the results it wanted.

What successful business leader make decisions in an echo chamber? And yet that is exactly what the American business community/ Chamber of Commerce funded. How could anyone not see that the triumphalism of Grover Norquist or the thin invented-from-air rhetoric of Newt Gingrich or the patriarchal "my way or the highway" of Jeb Bush would eventually give rise to a minority -- energized by its grievances, supported by a near fanatical religious conviction -- within a minority that hijacked the party?

There is reason for tolerance, weighing all sides of arguments, and carefully balancing diverse views: it has worked for capitalism. And it has worked to build the world's most powerful economy from a nation of immigrants, many of whom are fiscally conservative and socially liberal.

The absolutism of a radical fringe of the GOP -- and the failure of party leadership to recognize its dangers -- ought to send shivers through the US Chamber of Commerce board of directors. It is time for a thorough house cleaning. That's the sentiment, too, behind the extraordinary "Business Voices Frustration With GOP" in today's Wall Street Journal.

There ought to be soul searching, too, about advertising with Fox Broadcasting Network. Rupert Murdoch's profit model has limited value to American business.

On the point of "single sourcing suppliers", the implication is that the US business community ought to pay closer attention to the fact that there are many fiscal conservatives who are socially liberal and Democrats. Not "Blue Dog" Democrats, powered by history and prejudice. Not GOP "Lite".

The American business community needs to repair the damage it has done through a careful reconsideration of who and what deserves to be vilified or rehabilitated.

I Voted on the Jackson Bond Today: NO. By Geniusofdespair

I voted a big FAT "NO"!  Wrote why the other day...

The Miami Herald endorsed it but it was a wacky endorsement, besides they endorse anything that cost us money, from the Miami Herald:

Skeptics may have doubts. Didn’t we just agree to a huge bond issue for the school district last year? And didn’t we force the mayor to backtrack on a plan to raise property taxes for a good cause (public libraries and an expanded animal shelter) because we couldn’t afford to pay more?
Yes and Yes.

Ideally, another public bond issue could be delayed until the effects of the painful recession are behind us.

That is the only part worth reading of their endorsement.

Lynda Bell's Campaign Donation From Her Campaign Account to Florida Right to Life. By Geniusofdespair

Apparently the address given for the $1,000 donation Lynda Bell gave to Florida Right to Life is at Florida State University. It is the address of the student mailboxes says one mom.  It is not the official address of Florida Right to Life which is in Almonte Springs.

There is an event in Tallahassee April 18th sponsored by this group:

Event Includes:
*Celebration of LIFE Breakfast – First Baptist Church of Tallahassee
*Praying for LIFE – Steps of the Old Capitol
*Meetings with State House & Senate members (They don't have a political action committee)

If this is what Lynda Bell's $1,000 is going towards, it is totally inappropriate. People giving to a non-partisan campaign do not expect to be supporting favorite issues of the Commissioner.

The Slumbering Beast stirs: how radical Republicans did to their own party, what Democrats could never achieve ... by gimleteye

It is no longer a matter of speculation: by shutting down the government and driving the U.S. to the brink of default, the GOP is the midst of utter strategic collapse.

How this happened is not a matter of speculation either. Veering toward billionaire conservative funders, their greed and self-interest, the GOP became an echo chamber through which only approved voices (ie. Fox News) could surface. Listening only to its own radicals, the GOP succeeded where no Democrat leadership could: repelling voters to such an extent that the 2014 election cycle will be a GOP bloodbath.

It is finally clear to American voters who had not paid much attention to the fine points of redistricting, that gerrymandered districts and fair play initiatives the GOP spent millions to combat -- like Fair Districts in Florida -- paved the way for the current disaster. You hear it now from disgruntled Republican senators: if only the radicals had stayed in their corner ... but it is the party leadership -- leaders like Jeb Bush -- that failed conservative voters.

And now America see the GOP for what it is: the resurgent faction of bitterness and resentment -- bitterness against minorities, including against Hispanics, and bitterness against fair and reasonable protections for the public.

Over 2.6 million people have viewed the following viral video/ explanation from the floor of the US House of Representatives, documenting the procedural tactic by the House GOP that shut down the government.

From Josh Barro, Business Insider Magazine: "There is no serious argument for Republican governance right now, even if you prefer conservative policies over liberal ones. These people are just too dangerously incompetent to be trusted with power." Barro adds, "A party that is this bad at tactics can't be expected to be any good at policy-making."

In a special election yesterday in Pasco County, a secure seat in the Florida House flipped to a Democratic challenger, despite more than a million dollars spent by the GOP. More of that, on the way.

Republicans are getting many giant mailers about Jackson's GIANT Bond proposal. By Geniusofdespair

The election is in November but I have already been getting really giant flyers telling me to vote for the Jackson bond proposal.

I don't vote YES for bonds so they are wasting their time especially for an $830 million bond.  The Democrat in my household has not gotten any flyers, while I, as a Republican, have gotten 3 in about 10 days. Maybe they have to adjust the reading level and the messages for Democrats or they figure they are stupid enough to just vote for it.

Why don't they stop wasting money on flyers and run the damn hospital better. And why are they targeting Republicans?

How much is Carlos Migoya's salary? $590,000 plus bonuses.

Stupid big expensive flyer. One of three for a November election.

Do you have any idea how expensive it is to send these flyers countywide? Don't be duped. We already fund this hospital with a half penny sales tax and a half penny from our property taxes - that is $350 million a year. Here is what they should have done (written in 2011):

A task force of 20 Miami-Dade healthcare leaders has recommended that the financially troubled Jackson convert to a private nonprofit, a path taken by Tampa General and many other public hospitals across the nation over the past 20 years. The task force's 143-page report, set to go to the County Commission next month, urges commissioners to quickly create a nonprofit with the "independence, flexibility and nimbleness" to make sound economic decisions for Jackson, which has lost $337 million during the past two years.

Many struggling public hospitals have prospered after freeing themselves from political controls and bureaucracy that some healthcare professionals believe are the cause of inefficient operations. Tampa General is one of them.
Maybe with Obamacare we won't need this stupid mega-bond.

Why do Miami-Dade Republican voters follow "The Reign of Morons"? ... by gimleteye

Eye On Miami Memo to Hispanic Republicans: you should be standing in the streets burning your party affiliation cards today.

I don't find much quarrel in Charles Pierce's "The Reign of the Morons" in this month's Esquire. No nuanced point of view can explain the current catastrophe in Washington as a bipartisan disaster, although the nation's newspapers editors do their best to make that case. The shut down and brinksmanship is not just the GOP's doing, it is the exultant result of radical extremists who were allowed to hijack the GOP by the party's grand masters. Period.

Miami-Dade's Republican delegation to Congress and the state legislature fit right into the disaster. So assuming there are sentient Republican voters -- unlike their elected officials -- why don't Miami-Dade Hispanic Republicans jump ship?

Why Hispanic? Because the angry white minority is coalescing around the grievances of racial and ethnic identity.

I share Pierce's despair that the Democratic party can find the footing and clarity to explain the answer. I have plenty to say on the subject (and have on this blog), and that will come later. But for now: how in the world did the GOP become the party of morons?

The reason is less in Pierce, than writings in the New York Times by Thomas Edsall. So, yes: read Pierce. But more importantly, try to understand what Edsall is saying. It's angry white voters who are dominating the GOP. They are angry because globalization (supported by Democrats and Republicans, alike over the past forty years) fundamentally re-arranged the economic deck chairs. It took decades to unfold, but now it is clear and the Tea Party found the source: all the equity in our decades of "happy motoring" middle class values has vanished in the smoke of broken promises. Who are the angry voters who "want their country back"?

"Goodbye, Miami": it's getting realer and realer ... by Guest Blogger

Howard Wanless, Caroline Lewis, Sebastian Eilert, Katy Sorenson, Laura Reynolds, Marta Viciedo

It would be hard to find a more poignant example of the contradictions over sea level rise and its impact on South Florida than those presented at the “Goodbye Miami?” event last Wednesday night in the Brickell district of downtown Miami.

The marquis for the get-together read, “The world says we’re doomed. Come hear what the local experts have to say.” Its impetus seemed to be the Rolling Stone article depicting Miami as the American Atlantis. It drew an audience of about sixty; mostly twenty or thirty-somethings plus a few old folks like me drawn by the inclusion of the venerable Katy Sorenson on the bill. Sorenson spells integrity.

But integrity alone can’t overcome the contradictions, which came alternately from the local experts:

Katy Sorenson: President & CEO, The Good Government Initiative
Caroline Lewis: Executive Director - The CLEO Institute,
Dr. Harold Wanless: Chair, Univ. of Miami Department of Geological Sciences
Laura Reynolds: Executive Director, Tropical Audubon
Sebastian Eilert: Architect
Marta Viciedo: Urban Planner
plus added attraction Philip Stoddard, Mayor of South Miami

I’ll get to the contradictions in a minute, but first a word about the sponsors. “Goodbye Miami?” was organized by three groups ...

Picture of the Day: Taken Last Night at Publix Food Market. Geniusofdespair

Don't people look in the mirror? These butt cheeks were photographed in a supermarket not on a beach.  How did I see her? All the men staring in one direction. Just followed their stares. I was outside the store when I took the photo.

State Rep. Erik Fresen Agreed He Violated the Law. By Geniusofdespair

According to the Oct. 11 edition of the Palm Beach Post:
A top Florida House Republican is admitting he failed to properly disclose his finances. Rep. Erik Fresen, R-Miami, has reached an agreement with the Florida Commission on Ethics over charges that he did not include correct information on annual financial disclosure forms.

Between 2008 and 2011 Fresen did not include information about bank accounts, fines he owed and a foreclosure judgment.

Fresen, who heads a House budget committee, previously called the allegations “baseless and pointless” and said they were based on complaints from a political opponent. But he signed an agreement in September where he agrees he violated state law. The agreement calls for his ethics case to be referred to the Florida House of Representatives to decide whether he should pay a fine.
Vote for Daisy J. Baez for this seat --- 114. Let's dump Fresen.

A Blast From the Past: Carlos Gimenez's Campaign Speech. By Geniusofdespair
