The protest went on all over Florida yesterday. People dressed in black, to signify an oil slick, joined hands at about 2pm in solidarity against oil drilling off Florida's Coast. Thank you Miami Surfriders and Progress Florida for bringing Hands Across the Sand to my attention. Hit on image above to enlarge it.
Aaron Rubin is the sign creator.

This is one of Florida Audubon's most effective statements ever. Congrats to their policy and outreach staff for staging such an important and influential event.
It wasn't an ONLY an Audubon event. Surfriders rock. Stop giving only one group credit.
Audubon? Yuk. Are you kidding?
My apologies. I thought this was an Audubon event. Saw a news story where somebody there was quoted. From what I read, it sounded like they were the driver for this event.
Who deserves the credit? Because this was a truly great effort.
Hands Across the Sand was the idea of a business owner in Panama City. I love it when a citizen who cares just decides to do the right thing. See, one person can make a difference.
And surfer dudes deserve some credit, too for joining in and getting everyone else excited.
LOVE the photo montage. Thank you.
Dave Rauscholb, owner of Bud & Alley's restaurant in Seaside, in the Panhandle thought this up last October. By the time of the event yesterday, Audobon, SIerra Club and most of the state-wide environmental groups were in support. DIfferent organizations were sponsors at different beaches. Pinellas County (St. Pete) probably had the biggest overall turnouts, 2000+ overall is my guess. Walton County, Daves's & my home had the biggest % of population, at least 1000 out of 45,000 population.
Send me photos from events and I will post them --one good one geniusofdespair@yahoo.com
Great cause. Great idea. Great event.
Florida should ban offshore oil wells. So many reasons why...
You should show a photo of the parking lot filled with their gas guzzling Mercedes SUVs and Range Rovers. These folks are hypocrites of the first order. They don't care about affordable gas because they can afford to pay higher prices.
Get off it...last anon, sour grapes.
We need to do a line in the sand event for florida Hometown Democracy Amendment 4.
Jill, I like that idea too
