Does Carrie Meek make us proud? By Geniusofdespair

(I guess Kendrick didn't know how to get this photo and copy off his website quick enough -- this is about the project reported on by the Herald!)

I was going to write about Carrie Meek’s legacy being damaged by this new scandal at Miami Dade County involving a con job by a developer (A boffo report in today’s Miami Herald: Developer reaped millions for biotech park never built). But now I am thinking: What legacy? She has a street named after her. She planted a tree at Virginia Key Park (that has since died). I previously reported on Carrie Meek on March 15th:

Ms. Jordan is championing a $200 million dollar airport development proposal sponsored by a politically influential foundation headed by former U.S. Rep. Carrie Meek. However, she has indicated that Higgins would be able to pitch the county once Opa Locka Community Development is out of the picture.”

What a mess.

I don’t think Willie should have taken so long and how the hell did he get the contract anyway? But, I also ask, are we going from the frying pan into the fire with this one? Carrie Meek appears to be tottering on the dark side of late - tarnishing her legacy – lobbying for developers and rock miners outside the Urban Development Boundary and now this. And isn't she in her 80's? Tsk, tsk.

I decided to see what the online (strange) encyclopedia Wikipedia had to say about Carrie Meek:

She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992. Meek refused to attend a meeting with President George W. Bush in February 2001. She retired from the House at the end of her term in 2003. She was succeeded in office by her son, Kendrick Meek. Carrie P. Meek is an African American, with 3 children, 6 grandchildren,2 Great Grandchildren, and 1 adopted Grandchild. Carrie P. Meek has an incredibly big "Person Like" dog, a great Dane, named "Dutchess" and lives presently in Liberty City, Miami, Florida.

That sounds about right. Not much meat.

If you define legacy as a transfer of assets. I guess she has one. If you define it as a gift from the past for future generations: Forgetaboutit! If she doesn't watch out she is going to taint her son but good. It is already starting.

As reported by -- why have i never heard of him -- Jason Grotto:

Kendrick Meek said he did not know his mother was provided money and perks from Stackhouse. The congressman said his mother never approached him about funding the project with federal dollars and that his support is based on the community's needs.

Like, who believe that? Kendrick you are headed down the wrong path! Hillary and Barack take note -- stop fighting over him.

By the way...

If the Miami Herald keeps up this good reporting, we might have to change our masthead which calls the paper "anemic." I shouldn’t pick on them, McClatchy, their parent company, is losing a ton of money: ad revenues are way down. Speaking of money, the article today said we the innocent County residents could lose another 23 million of our hard earned tax dollars on this one. Anyone keeping count?

Kendrick:

"Hey mom, where did you get that new car?"

What son does not know where his mother got her car. Every son participates in mom's purchase of cars...especially when they are a senior citizen,

Disgusting behavior by Carrie Meek and her son Kendrick Meek. I always thought it was disgusting that she resigned her Congressional seat in such a way that no one could run and win it other than her very young and very inexperienced son. Then she went to work for rock miners and for any politician who would write her a check. (What kind of luxury car did she get from the developer?)

Now this scandal. How much have the taxpayers lost? How many acres have been taken from the public? How much more money will we lose?

Was Barbara Carey-Schuler involved in this scheme?

Kendrick Meek has had some curious supporters for being a Democrat. Wasn't he a consultant for Wackenhut at one time? Why on earth would a company like Wackenhut be interested if furthering Meek's career? Any guesses?

Take a look at what else he did before being elected to Congress.

We need to help the true face of the community like that Umoja village guy get elected.

I just took a look at the story you linked. Keep an eye on this one. Who provided the Boston developer with the connections to get this deal in the first place?

I have my suspicions...

Just got this off the Watchdog Report by Dan Ricker:

"The beloved Meek since her retirement in 2002 after a decade in Congress has been active in a number of ways ranging from getting hundred of thousands of dollars for the Carrie P. Meek Foundation from the county, to being a federal lobbyist for Miami-Dade paid up to $75,000 this past year, to being a lobbyist for companies ranging from the rock miners industry to most recently in May, registering as a lobbyist for Wackenhut Securities which has the controversial security contract for Metro-Rail that is under investigation." Geniusofdespair,

You're on the right track. I'll check back in often.

Pathetic! African Americans need a new generation of leaders in Miami Dade County, unaffiliated and unattached to the current set of public officials. What a sad state of affairs... and the Big Dogs in the Democratic Party should pay attention! We are sick and tired of corruption wherever it occurs!

"Cash and Carry" Meek and Barbara Carey-Schuler are embarrassing to everyone, but especially to the black neighborhoods who get their planned improvements "disappeared". Their behavior is embarrassing to the white neighborhoods who pay the taxes that end up getting hijacked by the "poverty pimps" crowd. Terrible.

Guess who is taking lessons from Carrie Meek and Barbara Carey-Schuler? Michelle Spence-Jones. Spence-Jones is sitting at the knees of those who "raped and robbed" ahead of her. So sad.

don't forget Edmonson, she is part of the group!

Carrie Meek Center Business Incubator in Homestead ... I wonder how much she has to do with that, and how much money the foundation gave to it to give her a namesake?

And is it successful? It is in the CRA's shadow.

Carrie Meek was ALWAYS a partner of the builder/developer community. She was a favorite of the LBA and cast her lot with them a long, long time ago when she was still a county commissioner. Remember that story, a few months back, about big builders reaching out to the African American community with leadership grants? It's just the latest iteration of keeping African Americans complacent and passive.

Seems to me that Carrie Meek also backed Mayor Diaz and was "paid off" as a consultant. Do I recall that correctly?

I thought people had to be dead to get streets named after them? Did she pay someone off?

Carrie Meek took $50,000 from Jose Cancella to support him for Mayor of Miami-Dade County. As soon as his check cleared she disappeared. Cancella came in 8th.

So far as I can tell, this blog is the ONLY place there has been any critical analysis of the Carrie Meek phenomenon.
