Miami Dade County's GOP is silent on Donald Trump: why? No respect for Hispanics? ... by gimleteye

Miami Dade County's GOP is failing the Trump-Latino-Test. Why? This is, after all, the city in the great state of Florida that defines Hispanic identity. And yet, leaders like Miami-Dade mayor Carlos Gimenez have been silent on Donald Trump.

Frank Sharry, executive director of immigration advocacy group America’s Voice, put it succinctly to the LA Times: "(he) said he was surprised that GOP leaders have not come out more strongly against (Trump's) statement."

The statement being the GOP candidate for president was sick of Mexico "... sending people [to the US] that have lots of problems, and they are bringing those problems to us. They are bringing drugs, and bringing crime, and their rapists.” Trump, sizing up his audience, also called on Mexico to fund the building of a "great wall" along the southern border to prevent the supposed influx of Mexican criminals to the US.

“Can you imagine if he was talking about Jews? African Americans?” Sharry said. (EOM: What about Cuban?) “Would the GOP stand up? Of course they would. ... But the silence of the GOP on this is defining the party.”

Mayor Gimenez enjoys his time with Donald Trump on the golf course and others close to the mayor would rather be comped at Doral than raise an eyebrow. And by silence on Trump, the truth comes in in two flavors: either they hate Latinos themselves or just Mexicans.

There is a third possibility: that Trump's ethnic baiting cannot go unanswered in Miami-Dade. The County Commission's condemnation is not enough.

In that case, Mayor Gimenez, if you can't fire Donald Trump from the Trump National Doral Golf Club and the Cadillac Championship of Golf, make him pay the free market rate for services Miami-Dade County provides gratis. And next time he asks you to a round of golf, tell him: "Not While I'm In Public Office."
No dogs or Mexicans allowed unless it's working on the golf course.

Voters are going to have a field day in 2016, if they care.

Isn't Jeb's wife, Mexican? Why hasn't Jeb lashed out at the Donald yet? Maybe Gimenez is getting his cues from Jeb. Silence is golden.

Alan,
You have no idea what you're talking about. Learn the facts before you opine.

Gimenez's PAC did return the Trump donation.

I don't know about other Republicans but my love affair with Ted Cruz is over. It will be Trump in the primary for me. This will not be the last of his outrageous statements. Look forward to more. Meanwhile watch out for Mexican rapists at the border. I look forward to the Great Wall of Canada too. They are sending all their rapists over the border as well, Mr. Trump. Think about that border too.

How long has EoM resided in Miami-Dade County? You should know that most Cuban-Americans share Trump's view of Mexicans.

"Trump had the guts to say what most Americans believe."

Trump said what most REPUBLICANS believe. There is a huge difference between "most Americans" and Republicans.

"You have no idea what you're talking about. Learn the facts before you opine." Nice drive by shooting. Why don't YOU opine on the facts?

I can't speak of Cuban-Americans in other parts of the country but Cuban-Americans in Miami care only about Cuban-Americans in Miami. And yes, I have had this discussion with my Cuban-American amigos. They don't care about Dominicans or Puerto Ricans or Mexicans or (insert Central American Country name HERE). In fact, most only care about the lighter-skinned Cubans while virtually disowning the more negro Cubans.

Johnny Appleseed, there is also a huge difference between Hispanics in the US and Cuban Americans in Miami. I have said for years that the Cuban experience in America is vastly different than the experience of other Hispanics in America. The CAA is a travesty. While Cubans are welcomed here, other Hispanics are shunned and cast as miscreants.

Isn't Donald Trump an immigrant too? From Queens?

Donald Trump, as we all know, is a "man-child" "Cartoon Character" - whose BORED.

When he announced his "candidacy," he insulted not only Hispanics, the President, but a good deal of his "fellow" Repubs.

The best way to deal with him is to IGNORE HIM - Its no fun playing by yourself. To paraphrase the "Bard" himself - Let it him be "Hoisted by His Own Petard." If he makes it to the debates, then its gloves off! But until then, its best to isolate him and let him dwindle in the wind.

No I want him out front letting us know how many bigots and nitwits he can get to vote for him.

My guess would be somewhat less than Obama did.

Looking at the photograph of these two tyrants it is hard to determine which one of the two has crawled over more backs, fired the most employees, engaged in the most corruption or filled the most rost rooms with the stench of their presence.

I am sorry reader you called other commenters bigots 3 times in your comment. Don't attack the readers responding to the post without even bothering to refer to the post. If you said what you said once, or twice even, but 3 times and you are out.

Why is the Mayor's official County spokesperson the one delivering news about a return of funds to Trump from the Mayor's PAC? Which payroll is that guy on?

That little worm Bryan Goldmeier should be the one answering to the press. Everyone knows he was the one that shook down the Donald for $15K during the Crandon Golf Course negotiations.

Tell me this Genius, you delete my comment because I call a bigot a bigot. I have no no idea what ethnicity you are but how would it sit with you if every time you read this blog there is someone disrespecting your ethnicity or place of birth? If you are going to be fair about it then how about deleting comments from individuals who make it a sport to belittle others, be it for the color of their skin, ethnicity or nationality? And I say this as someone who respects the issues you fight for and with all due respect.

Your blog article headline supposes that Miami GOP is any different than the national GOP. BID MISTAKE.

Regardless of the significance presence of Cuban-Americans in the GOP in South Florida, they are still insensitive to the condition and concerns of "Hispanics" in the U.S. Republican Cuban-Americans are very self-interested and show disdain for other Hispanics (for everyone in fact). They treat other Hispanic groups here poorly and are quite unpopular with them. Complete disconnect.

Read my comment again deleted. It is your repetition and not even respecting our blog enough to have read it that got you deleted.

Once and for all lots of people and politicians say a lot of things we don't agree with. But we live in the USA (or Yuma for more recent arrivals). So Trump has a first amendment right to say anything he wants just like posters on this board and yes some GOP candidates have criticized Mr. Trump (JEB being one of them). What do you want the GOP to do? Build a 50-foot fence around the Doral Golf Course, make Trump sleep with Mitchell Bachman or make him eat 100 spicy tacos in one sitting?

Those of you bashing Cubans here must be masochist, there are plenty of other places to live in the US where you won't have to deal with so many DAMN CUBANS. Don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you.
