No more Joe Celestin and removed from office Lucie Tondreau. This is a time to make the Haitian community proud. There has been enough corruption. The last Mayor of North Miami was no bargain either Andre (Pierre?) who drove a Porsche he forgot who owned it, whose cousin was caught on tape taking a bribe saying he could deliver Andre's vote. I haven't liked some of Commissioner Monestime's county votes. He also is born out of the North Miami machine. I am afraid he has become a lobbyist's tool. He is beholden to Ron Book for his win. Prove me wrong Jean. Prove to us that you care about the community, that you care about us all. Show us you can buck the system. That golf course redevelopment did nothing for your constituents. That was a lapse as big as the Grand Canyon: Commercial and industrial in the middle of an established residential community. Would this zoning change have had a chance in a White or Hispanic community? I wonder. Remember: A lobbyist driven Chair is just a stool to be stepped on.
I am still waiting for that great Haitian leader to emerge. Let's see if Monestime can relieve the poverty and improve his district.

He devalued the homes surrounding the course. He didn't help his constituents one bit. The lobbyists reelected him.
"Let's see if Monestime can relieve the poverty and improve his district. "
Funny, real funny !!
Great Haitian leaders? Now there's a phase you don't hear a lot.
Despite the kumbaya moment the truth is the last thing a BCC commissioner wants is strong leadership.. They all have their own agenda and want a chair who will help promote it,or at best, not stand in their way. So ironically they tend to elect the one who they think most malleable.
Of course you don't always get what you want.
Always good to read the goodwill that exist on this blog. Lets trash the guy from the word go. I believe this was a positive step.
I didn't say it wasn't. Just would like to see more good votes from him and would like him to show more leadership in his community --- honest leadership. I like Jean.
Jean Monestime has a history of bad votes. They might be because he is beholden to lobbyists or maybe because he does not research issues thoroughly? It might be because he is not very smart? We hope he will represent all of Miami-Dade County and not just be a salesman promoting Haiti. If he wants to promote Haiti he can always move to Haiti? Haiti needs Haitians to stay and not run away. Here in Miami-Dade County he should be trying to reduce taxes because a bloated County government scares residents and new investors.
The BCC needs to make decisions based on improving our community. Many past legislations and actions unfortunately seem to work against the voters.
I think this blog is asking for the new chair to work for the good of all the residents, not the well connected few.
I have never met Jean. His vote on issues and leadership on the dais will tell us how much the lobbyist own him. Follow the money and he received large amounts from the money crew and his other BCC members did also. We will see.
Jean Monestime as Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners?
Doesn’t anybody have any questions? I do!
What is his talent? What is his experience in public administration and public policy?
Name just one thing he has done for the benefit of the people in his District? Or, for that matter one meritorious issue he has brought forward for the benefit of the County?
What are his leadership skills?
This is not about liking or not liking Mr. Monestime. Rather, it is about the work of the BCC and what can we expect from the new chairman of the BCC.
Does anyone really believe he can stand up to the job?
What I would like to know is how did he get the position and who appointed him or elected him to his new position.
At least let the public know about this man who suddenly has become the leader of the County Board of Commissioners.
Dislike me if you wish for asking questions, but I have a dog in this fight and I know nothing about this man who will be the leader of the BCC.
The public deserves and expects information about his resume.
We should not be cavalierly ignored.
Do your own research the entire county commission voted unanimously to put him in office as the chair. He put Steve Bovo in as vice chair. Yes he isn't qualified but none of them are.
Esteban Bovo as Vice Chair? Now there's a good one! Does anybody remember that little incident just two years ago where Bovo's right hand employee was collecting absentee ballots from botelero Sergio Robaina and stashing them in Bovo's own commission office? How quickly we forget! This community suffers from amnesia and definitely needs an enema.
to the anonymous above:
What is his talent? Well, he ran against an incumbent county commissioner and defeated the corrupt bum who destroyed a legacy social service agency. That was a pretty good show of talent. And, he previously served honorably as a councilman in North Miami. He has focused on bringing infrastructure to his district, laying the necessary groundwork for future prosperity - that's pretty smart, but not something that creates instant press releases. The people of Miami-Dade County will be pleasantly surprised to learn the man leading the county commission is someone who is thoughtful, humble, and persistent. Not bad traits for a chairman.
The Westview Country Club deal was sealed when the developer hired every right lobbyist (read Comm. Monestime's crew) who especially could funnel $$$ to key community activist to either shut'em up or giving seniors free chicken lunches.
I'm sure the same group of lobbyist were behind the new Chair, Commissioner Monestime's monumental campaign coffers of over half a million dollars, that fueled his campaign and many others. $500,000 buys a lotta favors in North Miami and in downtown (SPCC) Miami. It evens buys away the opposition on the dais.
Yes we will wait for him to emerge as a different Haitian leader, but I'm not holding my breath!
Didn't cava hire a monestine staffer?
Lucie Tondreau and Andre Pierre's images still burned into our memories. Tondreau facing prison...
Jean Monestime just lost his best and most experienced staffer to Daniela Cava's office. Monestime seemed unprepared before, now what will he do?
Which Monestime staffer left for Cava?
