The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) is hosting a public meeting, TODAY, Thursday, Sept. 4th from 6-9 p.m. at the Miami Baptist Church to discuss the expansion of the Dolphin Expressway.
After being stuck in traffic commuting, it is hard to say how many citizens will have the energy left to attend a meeting -- especially since the board members of the MDX and those running the meeting have already made up their minds to extend the expressway.
We've written years of stories how the 836 extension is a political event, paying off the big land speculators who have been stuck with their investments outside the urban development boundary ever since the housing crash.

This is their moment, the Great Destroyers think, and because the Republican legislature and Gov. Rick Scott dismantled the one state agency charged with growth management, they might be right.

You will hear from the nimby's on this one. They just want more roads to save them time. They don't blame themselves for buying in stupid neighborhoods. A planner said to me, more roads is like buying a new bigger belt to lose weight.
The developers understand perfectly well that by extending housing into poorly served areas they are building the constituency for more sprawl closer to property they own. It was on full display at the Lowe's UDB fiasco, but it really is the growth model for South Florida. I remember how old bill losner used to pound his fist saying that all South Dade wanted was relief from Section 8 housing as his justification for more sprawl in farmland. Of course, what was built fertilized mainly his personal wealth. The rest became the worst area of foreclosures in the state of Florida and one of the worst in the nation. Losner is just one example. The rest are all investors outside the UDB, just waiting their chance to harvest their profits while the people eat dirt. And G.O.D. is right: all the nimbys will be out with their righteous indignation providing cover for the political appointees, some of whom have made lots of money fronting for or acting as developers in sprawl-land.
I agree. Those lowly poor people don't deserve roads. They are scum. If they can't afford to live near us by the bay, they can go screw themselves.
Hah hah hah. First you built suburbs without places of work, then you built malls, then you forgot to build parks and public spaces because anything resembling land use you trashed, then you decided that you could sell more houses at higher prices if you did something about roads that you didn't plan for. The ring suburbs are "affordable" until they are not. Then build more suburbs into the Everglades. It's always someone else's fault. Never the developers or their shills.
Now who is going to increase inventory to the point where Honey Boo Boo's daughter can finally aford a new single wide for her and her brood.

All I can say is that tonight's "meeting" was a wonderful PR job by MDX to sell a new "expressway". There were at least 15 MDX salespeople there, along with at least 2 MDPD officers, in case anyone got rowdy. There was not a single appearance of the word "transit", "light rail" or anything other than roads, roads and more roads. What a bunch of shills. The decision has already been made - why waste all this money to sell us a new Brooklyn Bridge. What a monumental PR production. I wonder what it cost?
Your post wasn't meant to be deleted. The houses out there shouldn't have even been built, then you would have bought a house somewhere else instead of buying out West and then complaining about the traffic and building roads and demanding stores be built.

Eastward Ho is not in print anymore. I doubt there is anyone left at the county that even understands what it means.
I guess I'm not offended to be deleted but I still don't agree. i really don't love my commute, trust me I don't. I grew up closer to the core but it's either too unsafe or way (WAY!!!) outside my range. if they wouldn't have built out here there would've been less supply. less supply usually means jacked up prices. it's no win. where the heck do you expect us to live? Seriously - I wish I was in South Miami (at least) I really do. But prices are nuts. As much as you guys talk about income inequality. you seem to favor those that have the means to live in nicer places.
