Citizens funding stadiums is so over. By Geniusofdespair

In a poll conducted by St. Pete Polls, Tampa residents nixed the stadium funding idea by a long shot:

But it's the response to the question about what to do with funds for downtown redevelopment that will be available in a couple of years that stands out.

31 percent of those surveyed said that those funds should go towards the homeless.
26 percent said it should go towards improving transportation.
13 percent it should go towards police and fire.
12 percent said it go towards constructing a new stadium for the Tampa Bay Rays, should they opt to leave Tropicana Field.

Yet OUR Mayor Gimenez is rushing all over the state trying to promote giving tax and tourist dollars to the Dolphins Stadium. While here at home he is happily defunding our public library system, cutting fire rescue and ignoring public referendums on pet rescue. And he has the gall to tell us his decisions are for our own good. Listen to the people Gimenez and serve our needs, not those of special interests and sports moguls. For a change.

I can't comment on the Pizzi post, so can I do it here?

"I never asked for any money and took no money innappropriatley."

Taking campaign money in a closet is illegal in Florida if the closet is located in any sort of government building.

2nd Anon you are being very generous in your description of "Campaign Money" 3K in cash in an envelope is probably not destined for any campaign. If it was it is illegal to accept contributions of over $50 in cash.

G.O.D. I am extremely disappointed in you (probably why I'm an agnostic and a skeptic). I won't say I won't ever read your blog again but your behavior in the Pizzi affair has affected how I will view your post on this blog.

I am not accepting comments so don't leave them here on the Pizzi post. It is not often we get an exclusive. This is one. I gave Pizzi space for his exclusive statement. I offered no opinion and I don't want this to turn into a bash Pizzi fest. You have his statement you can choose to read it or not. No more comments. As he said he hasn't been proven guilty.

I think the stadium owners are stuck in time when Clinton was in the Whitehouse, the economy was roaring, and everyone had plenty of money. A lot has changed in the world since then and we are all working in an environment of scarcity. Like us, they too are going to have to learn to do with less.

Paying for renovation of someone's stadium is a non-issue as far as I am concerned. The Miami Herald has revealed that many old people here are going hungry and need food. This is unacceptable for our community. The Mayor, community organizations, churches, and anyone else who claims to be a leader needs to move quickly to contain this situation. This is what leadership is about - solving problems for people, particularly for the fraile and weakest among us.

Carlos Alvarez was recalled and Manny Diaz left the City of Miami in disgrace. Both ex-mayors were responsible for the Marlins scam that will cost taxpayers well over $3 BILLION when interest costs are included.

While it is particularly awful for seniors, hunger is a growing problem in the community. With lots of people unemployed, we need to rethink how we are going to address it. Maybe much stronger coordinative efforts to make sure there are no holes in the safety net and people are not hungry?
