The FPL Vote: Commissioner Xavier Suarez says NO to both. By Geniusofdespair

I asked Miami Dade County Commissioner Xavier Suarez why he was the only County Commmissioner to vote no on both motions and he said that he gave FPL a fair chance to present their case but he believes they came up short. There was over 4 hours of testimony and there was a previous meeting on Dec. 14 when the quorum of the commission was lost so they had to schedule this second meeting. I have 4 videos of the proceedings - I will post more tomorrow. This is the first one. Gimleteye was at the hearing and did a post on it. He said about the Yes vote: "The public will lose more high quality wetlands, against the county's own code, and those 'radial collector wells' that constitute the biggest assault against a national park in US history will only require 'monitoring'."

Commissioner Xavier Suarez's Comments.

I see where your favorite commissioner Dennis Moss sponsored both motions. Disgusting.

How convenient for Bell to be absent. Later, while campaigning in churches, she can "honestly" say "I did not support that"

Opie - It is not like we have a lot to pick from on the Commission.

Anyway, it is in his district.

BEll ducked the vote for her reelection changes, and Suarez's vote was all for show, he knew it would pass. Hold the applause.

This is not an attack on the bloggers, just additional information that they may not know from someone who was inside this process. One thing worth pointing out that GoD and Gimleteye probably are not aware of, the Coastal, Wetlands and Planning staffs at DERM/PERA/RER spent hours upon hours reviewing and commenting and conversing with FPL and their consultants on the volumes of documents submitted in support of their expansion plans, and spent more hours coordinating with the various other review agencies to make sure we were getting our questions (and there were plenty of them) answered to make sure they were complying with the requirements of County Code. I left before the effort was finished, but I can tell you the County staff has been working hard on this for several years and are dedicated to making sure that FPL's plans are given the proper scrutiny for the size and scope of their proposal. Just the fact that the first item says "alternate site" means to me that there was some success there in making FPL relocate the reclaimed wastewater treatment facility from their proposed location within a high quality mangrove area adjacent to the plant. County staff does not have the political muscle that FPL has, but they are dedicated and doing their best to meet their mandate of protecting resources and the public while also understanding that FPL has rights too.

Mrs.. Bell daughter works for FPL and her daughter got the job because of her mother.

Thank you Evan for recognizing the hard work of RER-ERM staff on this effort. We don"t have the muscle but we know what is right and ethical. We can only hope.

Strong Mayor Gimenez-Osterholdt can veto this decision! There were only 8 supporting votes...it takes 9 votes to override a veto. The clock is running on the 10-day veto period. I suggest everyone call the Mayor and tell him to make a decision. Veto now!

Why were the same 4 commissioner absent for both meetings? Pretty lame.

To those that believed Suarez was just taking advantage of all those yes votes to register a No to garner popularity with his significant environmental constituents, he said further:

He was concerned about the negative pressure differential created in the radial wells, and secondly, that he believed that salt water could be used for the coolant. (I heard FPL argue AGAINST salt water, so I don't know about this).
