FLVCS RESPONSE TO FP&L RATE INCREASE REQUEST

Florida Power & Light (FPL) is now asking for a rate increase. Instead of a rate increase and a guaranteed profit in excess of ten per cent, FPL should be mandated to build generating plants using renewable and cheap energy which is abundant in Florida, i.e., sunshine.

Florida only has one FPL solar thermal power plant in operation. Spain already has fifteen on-line. Germany is close to operating its grid from renewable energy sources. Last week, it operated its entire grid for more than two hours entirely from renewable, non-nuclear energy sources.

FLVCS is asks our members and friends to appear at a public hearing, or send written comments, to the Public Service Commission at:

Florida Public Service Commission/ Office of Commission Clerk
2540 Shumard Oak Boulevard
Tallahassee, FL 32399-0850
The PSC will also accept faxes and e-mails:
Fax number: 1-800-511-0809
E-mail address: contact@psc.state.fl.us
You must refer to Docket Number, 120015-EI in your communication.

Check with the Florida Public Service Commission for dates, times and places of public hearings: http://www.psc.state.fl.us/dockets/cms/docketdetails2.aspx?docket=120015

WRITE YOUR LETTER IN YOUR OWN WORDS, BUT HERE IS A DRAFT LETTER WITH IDEAS YOU MIGHT CONSIDER.

Ref: Docket Number, 120015-EI
Florida Power and Light should not be rewarded with a rate increase by the Public Service Commission unless the increase is used to fund renewable energy development in Florida. Why should this corporation be guaranteed a ten per cent return on investment (profit) when its use of renewable energy is so poor? Florida is the "Sunshine State" yet we have only have one thermal solar plant in operation, Martin County Solar. Spain already has fifteen on line. Germany is very close to having their entire electric grid powered by non-nuclear, renewable energy. Why is Florida Power and Light so far behind the curve?
By not making adequate investment in renewable energy, FP&L has helped keep Florida dependent on oil, coal, gas, and nuclear energy when we could power our electrical grid with cheap, clean, renewable energy--sunshine.

The Gimenez tax break reduced property taxes for FPL from $26 million to $20 million in Miami-Dade County. What did they do with all that money from the tax break?
