Politicians: Here is What Happens When You Just Show Up. By Geniusofdespair

I often warn politicians that showing up at the Christian Family Coalition meetings legitimizes them and that they should simply boycott this hate group, letting it wither away. After all, it is mainly the voice of one person, not an actual group.

Here is what they said about Mayor Carlos Gimenez, County Commissioner Joe Martinez and Katherine Fernandez Rundle attending their breakfast on May 19th:

"The presence of these top elected officials from Miami-Dade County, State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, Miami-Dade mayor Carlos Gimenez and Miami-Dade Chairman Joe Martinez, is indicative of the increasing support for the work of the Christian Family Coalition (CFC) among fair-minded elected officials" stated Anthony Verdugo, Founder and Executive Director.

Really? I hope it was worth it politicians.

You are correct that this is a hate group. I don't think people in Miami should take it seriously. The leader says hideous things about Save Dade. CFC is primarily an anti-gay group not a promoter of Christian Values like they claim.

Given the only consistent message from the Christian Coalition is anti-gay rhetoric, has anyone asked Gimenez why he attended this event? He gets lauded by Save Dade for his stated defense of LGBT issues, and then genuflects to the Christian Coalition. Does this man have no principles?

Over 300 people attended the breakfast. That is why politicians attended.

Both Gimenez and Martinez profess to be practicing Catholics. As such they, and many of other Christian denominations, must abide by Christianity's teachings against homosexuality. Not against celibate homosexuals, but against the practice of sodomy.

pish posh last anon - "practicing catholic"? really? there is only 1 message from Christianity that anyone should take seriously - do unto others..you know that one. Shame on Gimenez - the other 2 , good riddance hope they lose their elections, sadly I can only vote out Rundle, not jibber jabber Martinez..

To the anon above with expertise in all things catholic...has Gimenez set aside his beliefs to pick up the endorsement of the LGBT community?

To the other anon, just because 300 cretins gather in a room, it is not obligatory for politicians to appear.

Miamiexile - he is running for mayor...you can certainly NOT vote for Martinez.

Gimenez is indeed facing a dilemma, n'est pas?
The support oh the LGBT or of the Christian Coalition. He cannot continue saying to each group what they wish to hear!

What on earth is Martinez using to distinguish himself from Gimenez? Does he say he wants more development in the Everglades? Does he say wants to give overpaid county employees, especially police officers, even more money? I am curious to know what his campaign pitch is.

Martinez has a website up. Not much on it, but he is still claiming that he was the first Hispanic Chairman in our county’s history. In fact, Miguel Diaz de la Portilla was selected to be the first Hispanic chair in 1996 when Art Teele stepped down to run for mayor.

good grief, you're right genius, i had made up mind awhile back that I was voting for Gimenez so I've mentally blocked out the other ridiculous noise running for county mayor so I guess, in a way, i WILL be NOT votign for Martinez.. woohoo!
and just for fun and way off topic on this post but at the heart of all things Gimleteye, this just seen on the NYTIMES website " Today, the most valuable real estate lies in walkable and bikable urban locations" -- is their hope yet for my undervalued 10,000sq ft lot in very urban North Miami??

You are correct Genius, anyone running for office who does not subscribe to the homophobic, anti choice and extremist view of this group has no business going to this breakfast and lending them any credibility. The questionnaire that they use for endorsements is an outrageous platform. I have never gone, never would. The first year I ran for office 12 years ago I submitted my responses to their questionnaire just for fun to antagonize them. a few years ago a Member of NCJW who was a judicial candidate attended and sought their endorsement. I then threatened her that I would actively lobby people against her and tell everyone not to vote for her, so she eventuqlly refused their endorsement. I say there should be more push back from all of us who abhor this hateful platform. tell candidates who accept their endorsement we will actively oppose their candidacy.

If you live in Palmetto Bay and are opposed to intolerant religious groups like the Christian Family Coalition, you may be interested to note this about your vice-mayor candidate John Dubois.

"MIAMI-Last Thursday night, July 14th, 2011, nearly 100 top supporters came out to enjoy the Christian Family Coalition's event "An Evening with the Honorable Florida House Speaker Dean Cannon". The event was held at the home of John Dubois in Palmetto Bay, Florida.”

That’s Mr. Dubois with his arm around Lynda Bell in the photo third row down, left.

Why does everything revolve around gay rights? I couldn't care less about what gays want. There are more important issues for our government to address. The incessant pushing of the gay agenda here and elsewhere is annoying.

It’s not about gay rights, it’s about human rights. And ensuring the protection of human rights should be a fundamental mission of government, particularly our government.

Can't believe anyone would deny others a right to be happy.

Carlos Gimenez is being lead around by some very nasty lobbyists and campaign advisors. It's a shame. Gimenez will get reelected by 15 points. No need to pander.

That event at Dubois' house was full of all the "PUB" elected; Bileca, Jose Felix Diaz, Lynda Bell, etc., etc., Truthfully, everyone you could name was there. Some (D's) clearly showed up who thought it was about meeting Canon. First political fundraiser I ever went to that didn't talk about platform. Your mere presence meant that you bought in. Just like at the breakfast.

It's so true about Gimenez. His advisors and lapdogs are of the worst ilk. He is being used and won't know it till it all comes tumbling down on him. Whatever mileage he gets from their support will clearly not be worth it. If they were involved in the City of Miami watch out.

Gimenez is getting lousy advice. Some of his handlers are lowlife criminals and Gimenez does not even
know it. Contracts? Illegal LED billboards? Overpaid cronies? Gimenez needs to clean house.

Carlos Gimenez is too easily influenced by slick Cuban lobbyists. These slick, and sleazy, lobbyists are only interested in exploiting Gimenez for their own gain. Gimenez should get better advisors.

I am a candidate for mayor and was not invited to this forum that Mayor Gimenez attended.

However, I would have declined.

I am also declining most of the PAC's invitations for interviews. I will go to all forums where all the candidates are invited. And I will "crash" some where I am not invited like I did the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce "show" for Gimenez and Martinez only. What a farce in democracy.
