What a crazy time for stupid legislation all over the State. This is just in from my friends at Scenicdade.org:
1) On March 6 only Comm. Dennis Moss and Comm. Xavier Suarez voted "no", as we asked, against the expansion of the Miami Mural Ads zone to include areas south of SW 5th Street to the Miami River and north of NW 36th Street west of N. Miami Ave. on the edge of the Design District. Comm. Audrey Edmonson was absent and Comm. Barbara Jordan and Comm. Javier Souto were not on the dais when the vote was taken The vote was 8-2 in favor; Chairman Joe Martinez, Comm. Bruno Barreiro, Comm. Linda Bell, Comm. Esteban Bovo,Jr., Comm. Jose "Pepe" Diaz, Comm. Sally Heyman, Comm. Jean Monestime, and Comm. Rebeca Sosa voted in favor. (Bruno Barreiro sponsored this legislation, he is up for reelection and he has to go. - Genius)
2) Thursday, March 8, 2012, the City of Miami City Commission will vote on first reading to adopt an ordinance which will allow illegal LED billboards on the Children's Museum, the Gusman Theater, and the Knight Center. Please ask your city commissioners to vote no on this ordinance. Why does our city continue to allow more LED billboards; Is there no other way to gain funds for these institutions? How about an Arts and Culture Fund to which corporations that prosper here could voluntarily contribute (e.g., outdoor ad companies could donate some of the millions they make from all the monster Mural Ad sites the County keeps giving them)! Who is in charge? Lobbyists for billboards or elected officials?
Obviously, lobbyists are in charge.
Dennis Moss spoke aggressively against billboards and visual pollution. Moss and Xavier Suarez voted No. They showed intelligence.
The 8 county commissioners including Heyman
Sosa and Monestime voted for this knowing
1) that the city of Miami was not seeking it
and 2) that it was the brain child of lobbyists
for the outdoor ad industry and 2 property
owners looking for a cash cow. We need to
ask our City Commissioners not to
take advantage of this enlargement of the
monster Mural ad zone well beyond the urban core.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez should veto this legislation. The populace is NOT asking for more billboards and more mural ads on highways!
There is NO public purpose. Gimenez should veto this.

Please. Every major city in the world has something like building murals. This is such a non-issue. Sometimes, we just look for thigs to complain about instead of focusing on really important issues. Let's get back to protecting our water supplies, please.
The outdoor advertising industry has so much money from billboards and mural ads that it can even hire people to pay bribes to elected officials. Billboard company lobbyists can add comments to blogs.
Billboards and mural ads, which are just billboards on buildings, are visual pollution. Visual pollution hurts us all.
Every time a new billboard or mural ad goes up a city loses a piece of it's heart and soul.
When tourists and residents cannot see the water or the trees because every view is blocked by advertisements it will be too late...
Billboard promoters Bruno Barrerio and Marc Sarnoff are the poster children for visual pollution.
