State Rep from Volusia: Gambling is Okay for Miami - Not for Volusia.. By Geniusofdespair

The Miami Herald reported that a Senate committee approved pari-mutuel friendly provisions to gambling bill. So the rate we are taxing them NOW would drop to the dumb low level we are going to charge the big casinos: 10%. Bad deal. While this is going on in Tallahassee, I was sent this gem from Volusia County.

This is an example how the rest of the State views Miami. We are a bunch of sinning, derelicts. State Rep. Dwayne Taylor was asked: How do you feel about the casino proposal?

The devil is always in the details.... As long as it restricts (gambling) and doesn't bring it here to Volusia County, I'm willing to look at it. I grew up here. ... When I travel out of Orlando's airport, I see little kids coming on the plane with the Mickey Mouse ears and I can tell they've been to Disney. That's a family experience. When you go to Vegas (you don't see) kids coming back with T-shirts that say, 'What happened in Vegas stays in Vegas.' ... I don't want to see that on our World's Most Famous Beach. ... I just don't see Daytona being that casino destination because of the things that come along with it.

So it is okay for Miami and our kids to get "the things that come along with it" just not YOUR kids and YOUR beaches?

See poll that just came out: Most in Florida WANT Casinos.

Don't care about the POLL. 10% is a bad deal. Whether you are for or against casinos...10% is a bad deal. Get a brain people -- demand more.

10% is worse than what the sponsor was putting in the revised bill. It was supposed to go up to 18% which still isn't enough.

And the outcome was predictable. You can't offer to bring in monster casinos and say that you're really trying to reduce gambling.

If you want to reduce gambling, pass a law reducing gambling.
