Gambling: Chamber Idiots read the Friggin' Newspaper. By Geniusofdespair

Miami Chamber of Commerce: This is a BAD DEAL!!!

I cannot believe the Miami Chamber of Commerce endorsed the casino idea. Do they not know how to read? Do they not see what a BAD DEAL this is? It was reported as such on 11/19/11 -- the Miami Herald said that Florida's proposed 10% tax was a jackpot for the industry. A 10% casino tax would be the 4th lowest in the country. 18 States charge more. And, we would have to lower the current rates for the racinos if this 10% gets approved.

Pennsylvania charges a 55% gambling tax. In New York the revenue retained by the operator is 33.47% which leaves 66.53% for New York. Casinos in New York have a $1.088 billion dollar gross revenue. The gaming tax revenue is $503.48 million. Even West Virginia keeps 54.14%. The casinos still make plenty of money (Gross revenue $877.65 million - Tax Revenue $378.79 million).

This phony job creation crap: West Virginia's 5 casinos employ 4,528 and Colorado's 37 casinos employ 9,589. New York has 8 casinos and they employ 3,465 people. That is a measly 433 for each venue. In comparison, the county employs 3,000 people that make over $100,000. President of Resorts World Colin Au stated the 3 casinos in Florida would create 100,000 permanent jobs.  That is highly unlikely since Nevada has 256 casinos and only employs 175,000.

Miami Chamber of Commerce: READ THE NUMBERS FOR EACH STATE. And, city of Miami you might look at Maine that lets 3% of gross gaming revenue go directly to the city of Bangor and Kansas sends 3% to its local government.

I keep asking: WHY ARE WE GETTING SUCH A BAD DEAL IN FLORIDA?? We know our politicians are a bunch of idiots but come on, our business community should be smarter when there is a dollar sign involved.

Our legislators will not do a damn thing to add revenues to the county or city governments...they feel it is their duty to shrink government, even the local governments that serve their constituents.

The Chamber has now given our legislators a free pass to "represent" the people of Miami-Dade County while kowtowing to the destination casino industry.

Does anyone know terms of the lease between the Greater Miami Chamber and their new landlords, the Genting Group?

They should all be tarred and feathered in the Herald parking lot.

why are we giving the gaming industry windfall profits? Someone is pocketing a lot of money over this issue and the Chamber should be uncovering it.

Politicians have no intentions of shrinking government. They want to make it bigger and, if we give them the chance, make it more complex so they can control it more easily.

They are just greedy and we the people have given given them free reign to do as they please.

Let's face it, we are nothing more than indentured servants who have sold outselves into slavery.

Without voters stepping up to the polls to get them all out, nothing will change.

Nothing to complain about if you don't vote.

Excellent argument. I am not against casinos but I am against deals that shortchange us. We are suckers in Miami.

Gambling is a lie. They say you will win. You won't.

If you don't believe gambling is wrong, I'm not going to argue with you.

If you know in your heart that there is something about gambling that isn't quite honest and ethical, then we need to stand together.

Because to the casino folks from Las Vegas and Asia, this is not a game. They will stop at nothing --- nothing --- to get a toehold in our community. And once they have that, they will stop at nothing to thoroughly dominate our cultural and economic lives, and suck the life out of Miami.

They will own politicians. They will own banks and the media. They will be the largest employers in Miami-Dade. The 10% tax rate will go to 5%. Then 4%. As more of their casinos pop up like Walmarts all over the South, they will demand further concessions, until we are paying them to stay and keep our jobs.

Gambling is a lie. The victim of gambling lies to himself. You tell yourself you will win. You won’t.

Let’s not be victims. Let’s stand together.

How come the casino economies such as Vegas and Atlantic city suck? Does any politian rent the employment numbers?

I was a member of the Miami chamber and I decided that my membership money was better kept at the office. They are self serving and self important ... The membership is all about position and appearance. They are pretty much clueless about the actual residents... When you drive a Mercedes to work, get your maid to keep your house and take your 6 weeks of vacation.... You don't have a grip what is happening in west Kendall, north Dade or even Homestead....

Sorry about the typo... Rent = read.

The 10% would go to the State. Is there anything stopping the County (other can incompetence and corruption) from passing their own local ordinance levying a separate local tax on top of that? For example a 10% tax by the state and a 25% tax by local County or municipality?

Dave, State Rep. Marlene O'Toole (R-The Villages) is pushing a measure that would repeal local governments' statutory authority to levy business taxes. She says she opposes on principle the idea that local governments can levy taxes on companies simply "for the privilege of doing business." I think it is HB 4099, but don't quote me.

Is there an easy means of discovering how much money the "casino people" paid (bribed) Miami's Chamber of Commerce for its endorsement?

Love the comments by Hancock above. Against casinos and standing with you!

Genting owns the building where the Chamber rents office space. The Chamber people are dopes. They promoted the one sided Marlins deal that will cost the taxpayers well over $3 BILLION.

Unfortunately, the Chamber criminals are easily bribed.
