The Urban Development Boundary Move - Response from the Redland Citizens Association. By Geniusofdespair

You asked in your Dec. 9th  EOM blog post why we "bumpkins don't sound off on the UDB." Well, we did! We sent a letter to Mayor Carlos Gimenez and we sent this letter to the Newspaper - Redland Citizens Association

Letter Sent to the News Leader - DEC 12, 2011

Just recently Miami-Dade Commissioners voted 7-5 to send a controversial application to move the Urban Development Boundary to the state level, (DCA now called Dept of Economic Opportunity). Earlier this year, a change in state law backed by Gov. Rick Scott dramatically watered down the state's 25 year old growth management regulations giving counties and municipalities greater freedom to amend their local comprehensive development plans to control sprawl.

This application involves a 9.9 acre agriculture zoned parcel outside the UDB to be converted to business and office development and so the Redland Citizens Association (RCA) felt it important to act on this matter and send a letter to Mayor Gimenez to Veto this application.

It might also be mentioned that our own commissioner, Linda Bell was recently appointed as Co-Chair of Florida Association of Counties' Board, (as published in News Leader, Local, Dec 2, 2011). This Board makes recommendations regarding State of Fla growth management, environmental planning, and agriculture policies. We would encourage her to use her leadership position to encourage, support, promote, and sustain the agricultural industry. Ag comprises a vital portion of her district and a major economic engine of our economy.

I am going to think like Mrs. Bell our commissioner will think.
She will vote against agriculture. Redland Citizens Association (RCA) get ready for a fight. Mrs. Bell probably, needs money right about now and the developers and their staff are ready to give the money to those that need it. Do not expect our District 8 Commissioner to work in our best interest.
We should start the recall now before the new district lines are drawn and she becomes someone else problem and still our problem
Remember if she moves and drops Pinecrest and parts of Key Biscayne she will move into Kendall. When she runs again I am sure a Hispanic will run against her and she will loose. I am sure a Hispanic will replace Mrs. Bell in the new district drawn line. BYE BYE BYE either through recall or new district lines. We welcome a Hispanic replacement. Thanks Chief of Staff for this analysis and prediction. You are good for something.

Bell voted to move the line by voting to "transmit" this application. Her predecessor would have fought this tooth-and-nail. Actually she did the three previous times this application came to the Commission for a vote and she won.

Now Bell happily forwards an application rejected three previous times that would convert 10 of the 90-plus acres owned by the applicant to a shopping center on the edge of thousands of acres owned by housing speculators.

And the RCA needs to stop reading the South Dade News Leader which hasn't gotten a story right in 10 years.

Bell may be on the Florida Association of Counties but they have absolutely no role in reviewing land use plans. They lobby the State on behalf of County interests.

Anon you are absolutely correct on removing the agriculture logo. I forgot about that. Agriculture supporters get busy. Mrs. Bell has already suckered in The Farm Bureau. She has their support according to and insider of the District 8 office. Katy in the FB has agreed to say yes in moving the UDB all in the name of support for her legislative office when she runs again. Rumors and Gossip usually turns out to be TRUE in Homestead.
