Pushing it to da Limit: Lap Dancing in Miami Charter Schools ... by gimleteye

On first thought you think, this can't be true. A South Miami charter school converts to a night-time venue for adult entertainment. But, why not? In our time of need, schools have to make the most of underutilized assets. In Gov. Rick Scott World (ie. Florida) what's the difference between a charter school covering rent with nighttime pole dancing and using the school parking lot for car washing by cute teenagers? School unions and public education need to get out of the way for the "free" market. Miami charter schools are edgy kind of places, where all kinds of political nepotism involves the brothers and sisters and fathers and mothers of elected officials in the lucrative education business. Why not a little booty in Miss Smith's fifth grade classroom once the kids are all tucked in, at home? The next question: were any University of Miami football players, there? This story, as they say, has legs.

A Sign O The Times. This has my vote for best blog post of the year.

They should come to where former "dancers" become teacher of and then aspire to be city council person.

We had a good laugh over this at breakfast. I am currently looking for a teaching job and was wondering if there are any openings here.

Erik Fresen must be so proud! In between the parties and the out in the open lobbying in the Commission Chambers for his inside deal charter schools- he's doing a fine job!

He really should be the first elected officials mandated to attend the "Good Governance" classes!

These Charter schools are taxpayer funded train wrecks and Fresen is their chief lobbyist and beneficiary!

Ethics? Not is South Florida from what I see. Let's profit off of the back of our school kids, using taxpayer funds - and Scott, well between these boondoggles and his $30 per month healthcare plan - oh well!

Life is good - for elected officials!

Oh, wait, I forgot about the undoing of the class size amendment! Talk about the legislature working against us! 50+ kids per class in "non core" curriculum? Nice - once again, for the elected officials and their lobbyist, anti voter group.

Per the Herald article: Asked if the school was hosting any parties, founder and principal Rocka Malik responded: “Not that I’m aware of.”

Sure! SunBiz records include Meet Market,Inc register under Malik's name. No doubt another relative of Erik Fresen or Anitere Flores.

I would be slightly pissed if I were a parent.

Hell, I am a tax payer and I am pissed.

Where exactly is the School Board Representative? I never see or hear a peep out him!

Senator and Representative Bullard, this is your district I believe and you are state elected officials. GO GET THEM.

Genius, you've out done yourself today!

Among the Hialeah pool, the Bachmann love fest and this "party on down at the taxpayer funded, Fresen supported charter school", my head is spinning.

I want to laugh, I really do, but this stuff is just so out there, I'm almost speechless because it's really happening.

I'm truly convinced that only Dave Barry & Carl Hiaasen could have come up with better stuff to write about!

It's a trifecta this morning, Genius! Thank you (I think!)

Was Lynda Bell, among the dancers?

Living La Vida Loca! Only in this Friggin County! OMG, the images are just endless.

I think Chair Martinez may have been in attendance (that is a joke)! I well remember a few months ago he walked in to the audience of the Chambers while the BCC was in session to speak to Fresen about a Charter school application. It was a classic!

I think it was Bell & Bachmann doing some pole dancing after the bus stop!

Dont tell Mayor Bateman about this, all of his charters in Homestead wil be on board with this fund raiser

Chair Martinez, here: it's a private facility. They have the right to do whatever they want with it.

Erik Fresen and his brother in law, Fernando Zulueta (who runs Academica) should attend tomorrow evening’s festivities – hell, bring Anitere along. So big deal if the bar is on the floor. This would be a great off-peak venue for Somerset Charter School in South Miami – nothin’ like boosting that profit margin! http://twitter.com/#!/HyghLyfeEnt

Just imagine walking into the school the day after the event. Must have smelled like Bourbon Street. THAT is a real world education!

This is absolutely horrible. It throws a suspicious observation on schools and after school use. This is not the only activity going on in charter schools after hours. The parents need to withdraw their children immediately in protest. This type of activity would never happen in a public school. Our school board should set building use immediately on charter schools and the school board of each charter should set standards. It is hard for me to imagine this school keeping its charter. The school board of this charter school should be taking serious action against the leadership of the school because they knew exactly, that this disgusting dancing, drinking, use of drugs etc was happening.
This is also the result of not having money to run the school and therefore, have to generate money in criminal activity.

This is disgrace and shame on education. Shut the school down.
