Things to do this weekend: Sustain ... by gimleteye

Hopefully this week's cold didn't take too much skin from South Dade farmers who supply farmer's markets in Miami. We'll see on Saturday at the Farmer's Market at City Hall in South Miami and on Sunday, at the former Parrot Jungle/Pinecrest Park. A new restaurant in Midtown is opening Saturday night, called Sustain. Brian Goldberg, its owner, aims to use all local organic ingredients, throughout. In other parts of the country this wouldn't seem unusual, but Miami is late out of the blocks. Pricing is moderately expensive. At a soft opening last night, the servings were impressive: curried kabocha squash soup with peanuts, a salad based on Homestead grower produce within a "50 mile radius", and a poached yellow snapper with roasted Jerusalem artichokes, slow-cooked tomatoes, and an "ocean broth". With its wood fired oven, there will be no problem heating the next few nights. I'm going back. The effort is worth support, and who knew there was life at Midtown? Sustain is at 3252 NE 1st Ave.
