Eugene Flinn: What has he been doing? By Geniusofdespair

I ran into Former Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugene Flinn volunteering at the Greek Festival at St. Andrews Greek Orthodox Church in Kendall. Even while doling out food, he still took time to send a text. He said he is taking it easy since the election for District 8.

He recommended the trillion calorie dessert, Loukoumades which are Greek Honey Balls. I had them, they were good but as I said, they were loaded with calories. One ball is about 333 calories and they serve you about 5 or 6 at the festival.

Ouuuu. That pile of donuts looks yummy! And Eugene, well, his apron looks suspiciously clean.

The festival is still going today (Sunday) over on Kendall drive just west of Dadeland.

Isn't there a recount going on for Gene?

Gene is a regular church attendee and consummate volunteer for many causes, including autism and child cancer research. Word is that he and his spouse are huge anonymous donors to many causes.

How did he let himself be outdone in the election on the religious front? Who handled his publicity? Great guy, but perhaps too nice for the County Commission.

Eugene is a wonderful leader and he wasn't outdone any way but by the Republican wave that little Ms. Bell slapped her non-partisan surf board on top of.

When a non-partisan candidate does not respect the rules of non-partisanism and hands out republican slate cards WITH her election day media and then gets away by winning, it is a sad day for us in this county. Not to mention her blatant disregard for non-partisanship now has set precedent for every election to come. Shame on her.

I got a robocall with Lynda's voice saying "I am the only conservative Republican in the race". Isn't that illegal?

For Shame!? What’s your point? Democrats were giving out slates with Flinn’s name too.

It might be considered unethical, but it isn't illegal. Non partisan just means that the race is on all ballots (no party primary).

The idea has translated roughly that candidates would forgo party labels and run on the issues. This was obviously an exception in District 8 and Bell was smart in hitching onto the Republican machine.

In the end, it was the absentee ballot machine that mattered more than election day anyway. Bell won the absentees but nothing else. But all that matters in the end is the total number of votes right?

Same thing happened to Joe Garcia, in Miami-Dade anyway, where Joe won election day and early voting but was hammered in absentees. Rivera got 2x the number of absentee votes as Garcia.

I bet you'll find that trend in many other races that sad election day. Everyone is breathless over the "election day wave" of anger which wasn't exactly accurate since Dems still won on election day itself but lost long beforehand to the absentee ballot machine of the Republicans.

Have a Loukoumades and call me in the morning.

Are those calorie figures scientific or just guestimation? I think they're mostly air.

Fun fact: One of the most involved members of the St. Andrew parish has a nephew who volunteered for the Bell campaign. The Bell-loving nephew is NOT a regular church attendee.

Calories were on the Internet. My guess was a trillion.

I think the one that Eugene ate had a zillion calories in powdered sugar, honey and cinnamon before he even hit the dough. I am totally jealous.

At least with Flinn, his attendance was not a public relations stunt. I know Lynda Bell and if she had been there (she would have waltzed in late)that is what it would have been, nothing more than creating a perception. She kept talking about him being the establishment, well sometimes establishment means having a connection and a history of rolling up your sleeves. Way to go Gene, keep doing what you always have been doing, there is no shame in true grass roots participation with no political motivation

Nice omment Anon above - yes, for Gene it was not a publicty stunt. He was there at least 2 of 3 days. For Bell, her Church attendance is nothing more than an ongoing political stunt. Gene never brought his faith into the race. Should he have?

No, no publicity stunt. His younger daughter danced in the festival 3 times a day for 3 days (not to mention weeks of rehearsals). His wife and other daughter volunteered serving food too.

As far as the clean apron, he was serving food, not cooking it!

The more photos of Flinn I see, the more I believe that Bell won based upon appearance. He was never even nominatated for any of the Eye on Miami best looking politicians series. Voters like the better looking candidates.

And yet, Katie Edwards lost.

Lynda's fangs weren't showing. ;)

Eugene's hair is a bit thin, but Lynda's is a female version of a mullet...I am just saying....

Eugene is the boy next door, all grown up! He is wonderful just being his authentic self. Thanks for running, Gene. Don't give up on us!

I think the donuts are better looking than katie.

I think he looks like the actor on CougarTown. The one married to Courtney Cox's best friend. Ian Gomez. Maybe someone with more computer savvy can link a picture form imdb.

I think Flinn more closely resembles actor Larry Miller. http://www.larrymillerhumor.com/index.html The actor from 10 things I hate about you.

Loukoumades - Greek donuts. Insofar as donuts - as the great philosopher Homer Simpson says: "Donuts. Is there anything they can't do?" Donuts in any culture are great! Great festival.

Larry Miller definitely. I think that actor has even played a mayor. At least, he's always an authority figure, father, principal, etc.

Larry Miller, yup. You nailed it.
