With a Mayor Recall are Miami Dade County Residents Stepping into Deep Shit? By Geniusofdespair

Miami Today said that if the Mayor is recalled -- the COUNTY COMMISSION CAN APPOINT A REPLACEMENT WITHIN 30 DAYS. And, the appointment is by a simple majority. There is another option, a special election within 45 days: will never happen. I guarantee they will appoint (it doesn't have to be from the commission ranks) and that person will have a supreme advantage in the election in November 2012. So, in effect the Commission can hand-pick our next mayor. Boy, are we in for trouble. Do you realize we could be looking at Mayor Miguel DeGrandy...at least for a year, or Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina or Little Joe Martinez for up to 9 years? The thought of it makes me contemplate the blog knife (see blog below).

Next, to add icing on the cake, there is another recall afoot to unseat 5 County Commissioners: Barbara J. Jordan (District 1), Audrey M. Edmonson (District 3), Bruno A. Barreiro (District 5), Dennis C. Moss (District 9), and Natacha Seijas (District 13). This recall is unrelated to Norman Braman, "Miami Voice's" ballot language is at the clerk's office waiting on approval.

Good on Natacha. Only trouble is, some, if not all, will not be recalled because when the election happens the people will vote NOT to recall them. They are too popular to be recalled in their district, unlike the Mayor Recall which is countywide. The recall for Commissioners is only within the district. Term limits would be a better strategy. I called Vanessa Brito, chairman of the recall PAC, Miami Voice, to ask why they didn't go with term limits. She said this is a first step, her group didn't want to confuse voters since one recall was already going on. One last sad thing: Dorrin Rolle can not be recalled because the charter states you cannot be recalled within one year of an election. That is why he and Heyman have to be left out of the Brito group's recall. They are recalling all who voted for the tax increase that they legally can.

Here is the charter language on the appointment/replacement of the Mayor:

Any vacancy in the office of Mayor or the members of the
Board shall be filled by majority vote of the remaining mem-
bers of the Board within 30 days, or the Board shall call an
election to be held not more than 45 days thereafter to fill the
vacancy. The person chosen to fill the office vacated must
at the time of appointment meet the residence requirements
for the office to which such person is appointed. A person
appointed shall serve only until the next county-wide elec-
tion. A person elected shall serve for the remainder of the
unexpired term of office. If a majority of the members of the
Board should become appointed rather than elected to of-
fice, then the Board shall call an election to be held not more
than 45 days thereafter to permit the registered electors to
elect commissioners to succeed the appointed commission-
ers; appointed commissioners may succeed themselves un-
less otherwise prohibited by the Charter. If a county-wide
election is scheduled to be held within 180 days from the
date on which the majority of the members of the Board be-
come appointive, the Board may elect to defer the required
election until the scheduled county-wide election.

Won't happen. The appointment will be Hispanic.

Why in the world would you recall a man who has less than two years left in office? The devil you know...

Dear Angry Dade County Voters
Recall is not the answer.
Take your vote seriously and vote on election day for the person that you feel will bewst represent you.
Or we could go to a true democracy and we could have meetings at Dolphin stadium and take a vote on who gets the toilet paper contract this year and who turns on the water and checks the clorine at the water plant, and who opens the doors to the bus garage and who drives the buses that day...etc. etc. and so forth!
Dear God when did this place become Tea Party Central! I thought we were better than that.
A recall petition will find 45,000 morons to sign and then we will have a 5 million dollar election in 30 to 60 days. If the recall is successful then we have ANOTHER election because at that point the commission is going to be to afraid to do anything but go out for a vote within 45 days. That brings us close to the first of the year with no one in charge 'cause they will be too busy making sure they will not get thrown out. No one writing contracts making decisions about emergencies total chaos!
Another 5 million for a Mayoral election than no one will vote in because it's too close to the holidays or there is that great trip to Colorado etc. etc. And another 5 million dollar election; then another 5 million for a run off. Then those commissioners that get recalled will have their elections...some more money.
By the time the new government takes over it will be just in time to negotiate the new union contracts and put together next years budget! Oh yeah, how many official are going to be runing for Miami-Dade Mayor just in time to piss off another large segment of our residents, and face another recall by those who did not agree with thier budget.
I have always been an optimist but I have to tell you that this is not getting to improve until people chill out and take time to think through their decisions.
I for one will not sign any recall, will vote during regular elections (I'm a 100% voter) and will continue to defend the representative form of government.

Last anon: you are a sensible and reasonable person. The problem, quite frankly is with the cubans. They are riled up, thanks to cuban radio, who has been agitating them for about a year or a little more than that. The things you hear on radio are really way out there. They say things such as-taxpayers are paying for the Mayor's/PAC's legal fees, etc, etc. Total lies, but people fall for it. All this that is happening has the potential for civil and racial unrest.
Lord help us.

I am not signing anything either... not that support these guys... but every dollar we spend on a special election is a dollar in county services cut.

I am very scared for folks who can not see that this whole mess is an orchestrated effort to seize control by Seijas' band of evil demons. From Bell to the fact that Braman has one of Seijas' favorite people running the recall - opens up the door to much evil.

Braman is not looking so clean or innocent these days.

Do you think Braman is doing a power play to get a particular person in there? That would be sick. Also, he could be in cahoots with someone on the BCC.

Hialeah Julio for Sure.

No way I sign recall

Who is behind this effort? Is it really a failed candidate for the District-10 seat or is it a currenty mayor posing with her in the photos section of the Miami Voice Facebook site?

The only reason the cubans are taking over is because of low voter turn-out. This state was not founded by cubans. There has been a mass exodus of white anglos especially south of Orlando for many years and those that are left could give a rats ass about voting the right people into office.

CATO said...

AHH the Omniscient and Omnipotent anglos who high tailed it out of South Fla. with their "Will the last American to leave Miami....'
bumperstickers and their "No Blacks, No Cuban and No Dogs" signs

Yes they (anglos) went north and voted for all those great politicians (who got arrested for corruption) in Broward, Palm Beach and points beyond, the anglos have made such wise choices over the last 40 yeas that our country today is socially, poltically and economically a model for the world and for the ages, filled with the most erudite, productive and thoughtful citizens.

What is an anglo? Is he white (cracker)? Is he Jewish (Take it from Rick Sanchez keep quiet on this one)? Is he of English (WASP) descent? Is he of Irish (mick) or Italian (Dego) extrection? German (Kraut)? Polish (Polack)? Is he Catholic, Baptist or Lutheran? Do they wear white hoods and burn crosses?

I always wondered where most of the trailer parks went? Thanks to you I figured it out!

This dog (of German descent) channeling through a Human Being will sign the recall petition for any poltician now in office including Katy Sorensen (I know she's out in a month or so but she's no prize may G.O.D. Strike me down)

There's a lot of anti-Cuban sentiment on this blog. Shame on you bigots!

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure you can call them bigots. It's a reality we are all facing here in South Florida. Remaining native south Floridians are fed up with the Hispanic influence and how it has changed and corrupted the quality of life here. Most of us embrace diversity but clandestine business practices and the continuing influence on politicians by groups like the Latin Builders Association has become too much for us to handle. We are #1 in the nation for Medicare fraud, not one Anglo, or I guess we should call them native Floridians, have been implicated in this behavior. It's time to take back control of our destiny and our quality of life, Amendment 4 will be a major step in that direction.

Hmmm. I don't know that this post was about Hispanics, don't know how the comments morphed in this direction. That being said, Hispanics are a majority in the County and the County Commission seems to reflect that majority in make-up and in voting patterns. Remember when Jimmy Morales wasn't Cuban enough (having one parent as a Puerto Rican and the other as a Cuban). Cato, if anything is sticking up for Hispanics, ragging on anglos (or whatever you want to call white non-hispanics). I think assuming our readers and bloggers are anti-Hispanic is ridiculous and you are off base. Yes some are but when you paint with such a broad brush you become the small minded one.

CATO said...

G.O.D. you missed my point it doesn't (don't) matter what you are (is) if you vote or voted for for any of these clowns in office now here or in Akron you shouldn't point the finger at someone else.

I see posters here make remarks about Cuban's that if they were made about blacks or jews they'd be censored (probably have).

Blatantly false and rascist statements like this go unchallenged by you or Gimmy

"not one Anglo, or I guess we should call them native Floridians, have been implicated in this behavior"

I'll be the first to say that a high percentage of Medicare fraud is perpetrated by Cubans, especially recent arrivals but they are not wholly culpable and responsible (See Rick Scott and other NON Cubans like him who run these gigantic HMOs).

I Will Qoute G.O.D. from EOM
"but when you paint with such a broad brush you become the small minded one."

The difference between my post and others is that I see fault in everyone (call me Archie Bunker) we are all Humans and therefore fallible, some folks here only see fallibility in others, but have no mirrors.

Most of you and Gimmspierre's rants are about LBA rarely do I hear about Truly and SFLBA (on occassion but rarely).

Back to the original intent of this post
RECALL them all Cubans, Blacks, Jews, "Anglos", Lithuanians, Lebanese, Chinese etc etc etc

As an anglo, I think the anti-hispanic comments above are wrong-headed.

First, Hispanics did not invent corruption. Have you ever heard of Chicago, New York, Trenton, Montgomery, New Orleans, Detroit, or Philadelphia? We in Miami are not even in their league as far as corruption.

Second, Hispanics did not invent goofy ethnic politics. Talk to the Irish, Germans, Italians,Poles, Jews, African-Americans, and yes, the White-Anglo-Saxon-Protestants (who invented the concept when the first non-WASP's started to immigrant into this great land).

We are in this boat together. Start steering, hauling, bailing or get out of the way.

It looks like you all are missing the point that was made in this post earlier by the second anon post. I went back and read the whole trail and the issue is not the Cuban elected officials, the issue is the Cuban voters, who are being manipulated by a few in the community and a few in different media outlets. These media people know who they are and they have gone about a campaign of destruction during the last year and a half, and they will stop at nothing. Couple that with the lack of rebuttal by the Mayors office and you get perception=reality. They have turned his base against him, and he has become the local punching bag for many upset residents

CATO said...

So now its the "Cuban" voters that are dupes (dopes)?

Interesting the Mayors budget raised taxes on 60% of property owners, so that he could give raises to overpaid county employers and those who want to recall him are dupes? In your infinite wisdom, you must be an enlightened anglo. The only thing I don't like is that Braman is not putting his $$$ behind commissioner recalls, hope that group that is pusing commish recalls gets traction.

Having moved here from the North, I agree this place is a mess politically and it seems to be this focus of being from anywhere BUT America. Get over it people and be educated about your here and now, not what you might have known in Cuba or such.
