My Sister Worked for Rick Scott's Hospital and Here is Her Story. By Geniusofdespair

Sis, a nurse for about 30 years, worked at Columbia University Hospital -- one of Rick Scott's Hospitals -- more than a decade ago as a Case Manager. She said she was responsible for discharge planning for people who needed home health care. Her instructions were, she was to steer people to use Columbia Home Health Care which was housed where she was working (she believed that was against the law). Usually, she said, a hospital would normally ask a patient if they had a Home Health Care Company and suggest some, if they didn't. Hospitals did not strong arm patients on a selection as they did at Columbia. She was to say to patients: "We will set up Columbia Home Health Care for you."

Sis said the hospital was short staffed and poorly run and not supportive of nurses at all. There was a push to get patients out as quickly as possible and that was a big part of her job.

There were so many complaints about nurses not answering patient call lights, that the hospital hired people with no medical training to answer the calls. These untrained people went to the patient's room and said: "The nurse will be right with you." That was their job. The hospital didn't use water basins to wash the patients. They used handi-wipes instead of sponge baths. My sister had never seen this at a hospital. There were a multitude of staff complaints, so many she said, that they had to call special meetings to address the concerns of staff -- mostly complaints related to being short staffed. She found holding these meeting unusual for a hospital.

Three times during her stint at Columbia University Hospital, this tall, charming guy would arrive -- Rick Scott -- and give the staff a pep-talk. He would talk about how they were all part of a team. She always thought he was personable but she knew in her heart this hospital and Rick Scott were all about money, the bottom line ruled. BTW, she hated the job, she said Hospice work was less depressing and less stressful.

I found this tidbit on Scott: The $1.7 billion man
Rick Scott: Multimillionaire, Mastermind of Town Hall Riots (written by Steve Tarlow - 8/6/2009)

If you’re wondering who is primarily responsible for organizing the barbaric efforts to sabotage the Democratic town halls across the nation, wonder no longer. The man’s name is Rick Scott, and he is in charge of the Web site Conservatives For Patients Rights. He is a multimillionaire ex-hospital CEO whose company was charged with the largest case of financial fraud committed against the government in United States history.

Yes, the former CEO of the Columbia/HCA hospital system was at the helm during a span of 10 years when his company defrauded Medicare for $1.7 billion dollars. They were found guilty and that amount has been repaid – yet the conservative GOP pick Rick Scott to lead them into battle for responsible medical spending?

What else would you expect? I was going to vote for McCollum then I read in the Herald today that he is taking wads of special interest money- big sugar, Progress Energy, developers etc. I think I will stay home.

Rachel Maddow had that tidbit on her show.

Rick's hospital endangered patients-- worse than ripping us off.

Ist anon... do't do that. vote for McCollum. Scott is dangerous, and is using the money that was pilferred from all of us to buy ads to put his face on them. His face should be on a mug shot, not these tv ads.
Don't think for a minute that these special interests are not giving mula to Scott or Sink or Crist or Meek or Rubio, the list could go on and on.

what if you really don't like either candidate?
This happens when so much negative campaigning goes on.. it eventually turns off the voters... and they don't go out to vote. Sad, but true.

Unfortunately, negative campaigning works - that's why all candidates engage in it.

Regrettably, to most candidates, a local, state or Federal seat becomes more than public service, it becomes a prize. And in a game, winner does take all.

However, too much negative attacks is disgusting and does have the opposite effect - it turns off voters. Take the Martinez vs. Diaz-Balart faceoff 2 years ago.

I literally muted or changed the channel whenever I saw these go at it. In the end, I stayed home. That is a very sad result, but I felt, I had no choice.

People! Scott defrauded Medicaid and Medicare in the worst case of fraud since Madoff.

After knowing this, could anyone in their right mind vote for Scott?!

Seriously!

Scott will get thousands of votes because many people are basically stupid or take daily doses of stupid pills. They rather sit back and watch sitcoms, drinking beer and not engage in politics or invest time in learning about candidates. The glossy flyers and nice tv ads with kids, grandparents, and dogs do the trick.

If Scott gets votes, it's because McCollum has had it easy and really done nothing notably nor worth mentioning in all of his career.
People want someone new. Unfortunately, the only alternative is Scott.

Stupid people may want Scott. I don't. He ripped off all of us.
Wake up!!!

G.o.D., thanks for sharing your sister's thoughts on this. I had heard about this guy a long time ago and heard that many who worked for him (doctors, nurses and others) really thought the guy was sleazy. There is always a lot of slamming going on during campaigns, but I heard this guy being slammed long before anyone knew of his intentions.

No matter how you feel about McCollum, I am convinced that anybody that votes for Scott has some "screw loose."

How can you vote for anyone who defrauded the government?

I thought the Republicans were getting their act together - guess I was wrong!

Got to get past the primary first Einstein. Then it's against Sink.

Alas, I am a Republican (can't vote for Sink) and I am trying to strategically vote in the primary to give Sink the best chance --- however I can't take a chance that Scott will win EVER because he is so scary so In the primary I will vote for McCollum.
