It is my opinion that most unions have lost any moral compass. I don’t recognize unions today.Before anyone accuses me of being anti-union, I was raised in a union household and my father was a union official. I am pro-union, at least the ones that work to improve working conditions, have honest collective bargaining and support their brethren fallen on hard times. Yeh, there were some bad union goons, like the guy who may be gator meat somewhere.
But today’s union officials work in the slimy underbelly of bad politics.
Without even asking their membership they campaign for bad politicians. Other blogs have rightly criticized unions for backing selected candidates without interviewing all the candidates. Bad politicians don’t do anyone any good, even union members. Case in point: During the vote to recall one of the worst politicians in the County, Vile Natacha Seijas, the unions rallied to her defense, worked the polls and told voters the people doing the recall were crooks. So you guys and gals helped keep her in County hall where she wreaks havoc daily, hurting even union members that live in this County. The trade-off, of course is that she supports their contracts that help to bankrupt the County. This can’t be good for all those out of work union members.

Sometimes unions force rank and file to do things they really don't buy into.

Unions have gotten out of hand and they're negative impacts on the Nations economy, as a whole, are unforgivable.
From the UAW to the AFL CIO to SEIU (with direct Whitehouse access), and even the Teachers Unions are breaking budgets, bankrupting municipalities and bankrupting companies, including our small businesses.
I want workers to have good pay and benefits, but Unions should not have a higher seat at the table than non Unions.
Their political endorsements are just shameful, as well.
I have to argue with the second comment. Let's be clear it is the greed of coporate owners and higher ups that are harming our overall economy (which is impacting out municipalities), not the organized workers.
Unions should have a higher place at any table because they are organized forces, they are collective will.
This does not excuse or condone the terrible leadership of some unions, and the shady practices of union staff.
I am conflicted about unions. I like the idea of unions. I don't like them sitting out there pushing for candidates...mainly bad ones.
In general, labor unions are not narrow, self-seeking groups. They have have done more for humanity than any other organization that ever existed. They have raised wages, shortened work hours and provided a lot of supplemental benefits. However to a right-winger, unions are despicable. Why? Because collective bargaining empowers a worker against the corporation. Right-wingers hate that. As for politics, I believe it would be better if unions become apolitical and leave the decision making to individual members.
Fortunately the ballot box is still secret. I hope union members do their homework and vote for good candidates not the ones "endorsed" by the unions.

Teachers Union (UTD) sucks.... and everyone knows it. The head (a lady) hates the Superindendent. The Supe' has done the best he can... not eliminated anyone's job in these hard times.
Unions, in theory, are supposed to help the individual, but today they consider themselves a 'power', and it ultimately fails.
What I'm saying is that Taddeo is a sad candidate. A rich one, but a sad one.
Anyone who has to have color-coded cue cards AND a political handler (not Marin)sitting next to her in order to try to answer important questions from the Herald Editorial Board, IS sad.
How can we expect her to tackle the important issues of the day when she needs to have her hand held JUST TO ANSWER QUESTIONS!?

I am always amazed by the PBA in this town. standing by their politicians even when they are resigning from office like with Bruce Kaplan.
Anyone who knows anything about the Miami Herald screening process knows that only the candidates go into the interview with MH editorial board members and reporters. Come on anonymous from July 24 get real.
Annette Taddeo is a serious candidate as are all the candidates in this race.
Yes, and I'll bet that her color-coded cue cards and position papers she passed out to the MH editorial board as they asked her important questions came in real handy too.
Tell me, where the position papers scented to give them "that extra touch?" or was it the cue cards?
