The giant lit towers I reported on yesterday -- which they are calling murals -- passed unanimously today at the City of Miami. Bizzaro. Someone actually said that young people like shiny things. That they will get. We are on our way to Times Square style lighting except we are putting it by our Lincoln Center.
This quest for nickel and dime money making ventures is going to turn the city into a circus. I said it first.

This has to be one of the dirtiest deals of the Regalado administration and the current Commission to date. All of his B.S. about doing things "in the sunshine" was just that - B.S.
You should all be ashamed of yourselves.
Genius and the desparites,
Note that a Billboard is a board in which you post bills. D'uh.
The media towers will be Media Mesh technology that will provide content, advertising, and art.
It makes perfect sense not to treat a bilboard and a media mesh in the same way, and it makes perfect sense to craft legislation to make this distinction.
The city is better for this project. Much better, thanks to thougtful and progressive developers in the private sector to create public squares, jobs, and interest in blighted areas.
Call it what you wish-Billboard,Mural,Media Mesh.
It all boils down to the same thing-visual pollution.
Yeah mesh makes it so much better. At least I am not deluded like the last writer...Tomas
Sorry not you the one above that loves it.
Media mesh? MEDIA MESH??? Are you nuts??? An ad is an ad is an ad who the hell cares what it is on. You second commentor are arguing whether it is a snack or a meal, and I am saying it is Food.
It is not a blighted area anymore you have twin multi-million dollar performing arts center buildings across the street. But gee I am so glad the signs are mesh. That makes it so much better... duh back at you.
Not a backroom deal....
Unfortunately a cash strap city.
Sorry :-/
Watched some of the hearing. I didn't see a bunch of residents opposing it. The only local resident I saw was in full support.
Anyone who doesn't think that this area is a dump, hasn't been west of Biscayne in a while. A wasteland. The PAC hasn't changed that area at all; who knows, this might.
How are we going to see blue sky if we keep cluttering the horizon?
The voters of Miami elected a new mayor, Tomas Regalado, as a vote against the growth-at-any-cost policies manifesting in so much economic misery. In this case, the voters knew what they were voting against: an incumbent mayor and candidate, Joe Sanchez, who stood for the building and construction boom.
Are you implying is not a circus already?
Will we have any hope that this thing will blow down in a hurricane?
They are not going to be content until they completely visually destroy Miami. I-95 is an absolute mess now with all those toll signs and signals. Ratty people can't help but create a ratty environment. For a few bucks, a priceless enviroment is seriously compromised.
I'm not sure how I feel about this; every year, thousands of people go to NYC and Tokyo to look at the neon and stop and stare and take pictures.
It's one small section of the skyline.
People outside of the area already have us mainlanders confused with the beach. Even at first Lebron didn't say he was coming to Miami; he said he was coming to South Beach.
In west Kendall I see plenty of blue sky. And when I go downtown or get on I-95 it might be cool to see these as part of the skyline.
Of course, I don't live anywhere near there so I don't know what I'd think on a daily basis.
I think it's going to look cool :)
Miami was a marshland ... I am proud when I am going over the hump on 836 and see the skyline... beautiful Miami!! (especially all lit up at night).
