Peter Farago, 1922 - 2010

And...

Peter Farago, 87, of Key Biscayne, Florida and Little Compton, Rhode Island, died at his home in Florida after a brief illness.

He was born in Oradea, Romania, of Aladar Farago and Margaret Berger. His extended family were victims of the Hungarian-Nazi exterminations of the Holocaust.

During World War II, beginning in October 1943, Farago survived nearly a year and a half in forced German labor camps in the Carpathian Mountains. He returned home very briefly after the liberation. Fluent in several languages, Farago was then employed in the US military and its agencies providing refugee aid to dispossessed victims from the continent. At that time, in Munich, he met his future loving wife, Daphne Arcus, of Johannesburg, a Red Cross worker.

In 1948, he entered the U.S. on a military ship docking at Brooklyn, NY. Bearing a Hillel grant and through the intervention of Abe Fader, one of Broadway’s reknown theatrical lighting designers, Farago was admitted to the Rhode Island School of Design where he majored in textile engineering. Later and for many years in Rhode Island, Farago served on civic charities, the RISD board of trustees and Miriam Hospital.

In 1954 he established New England Printed Tape Co., in Pawtucket, proving a reliable and innovative supplier to the insulated wire & cable manufacturing industry during 34 years of ownership. NEPTCO became a converter of coated films and foils and substrates used in electrical and fiber optic cables, for deployment in undersea and harsh environments.

After retirement, Farago lived on Sisters Creek in Marathon where he enjoyed flats fishing in Florida Bay. He later moved to Key West where he was involved in civic charities and in 1998 to Key Biscayne. His beneficiaries included youth soccer, private education, the arts, and many individuals and charitable organizations.

He was predeceased by his brothers Paul and Steve. He is survived by his wife Daphne, of Key Biscayne; sons Alan, of Coral Gables, FL; Paul, of Asheville, NC; and Robert, of Providence, RI; and nine grandchildren.

Condolences: Daphne Farago, 445 Grand Bay Drive, Key Biscayne, FL 33149. A gathering in honor of Peter Farago will be held at a later date.

Alan and family, Nothing anyone can say could ease your aching hearts. The loss of a loved one is something that we all experience at some point in our lives. It is part of life. We remember those that have left us and cherish the strength they have given us to continue on. We never get over the loss of our parents but we find strength, love and joy in knowing they are watching over us now and forever. Thank you for all you do for this community, may dad rest in peace. Our sincere condolences to you and your family.
