This is why you all NEED the Miami Herald. We can't do this in depth research even though we reported on the waste at International Trade Consortium over and over. The reporter duo of Haggman and Dolan say that since 2007 the trips cost us about a quarter of a million dollars with no visible results. However, the reporters should add in the budget of the ITC which was $1.7 million since 2007 (reduced to $1.2 million this year). That brings the wasted money up, up, up. My favorite part of the front page article featured Commission Audrey Edmonson who went on a recent jaunt to Senegal and South Africa:
Asked how the Africa trip generated revenue, Edmonson hung up on a reporter.
See Post below by Gimleteye for more insight - first time we wrote about the same thing:

Take the lot of them, the whole County Commission, and examine them with a microscope and you couldn't find a fiber of leadership ability in one of them. They are seat warmers, parasites, do-boys and do-girls for the people truly in charge. They really believe they are doing their jobs when they entertain themselves with the people's money. They think they're entitled.
But I would be very afraid if I were one of them today. The day of the department store manequin as public official is over. The pigs will be unable to feed at the trough any longer because there will be no trough. The people are about to suffer great hardship and they will look around for people to blame. Having fronted for the developers, bankers and big business will become quite dangerous. Public hangings might happen in the new stadium before any baseball is played there.
The extreme pressure our economy and social fabric is about to confront will cause these pathetic creatures to run away and real leaders will emerge. They will be both good and evil people and there is a fight ahead between them. Our survival is wrapped up in it. Good may not prevail but at least we will spared the clowms that pass for County Commissioners.
We need Marty Marguiles and Norman Brahman to fund a purge of the County Commission charter.
I sure hope that Nat is correct in his vision of the future.
Charter review by the people is the only way to go. Until we do away with the incumbent protection plan otherwise known as single member districts, this and all of the other outrageous behavior will continue.
Vile Natasha has nothing to feer. Nothing will happen. The election system is rigged to favor the political machines that prop up this band of crooks.
Without meaningful campaign reform, term limits, and limitations on absentee ballots, change will never come to the county commission

The previous comment about absentee ballots is right on. This farming of absentee ballots has become a thriving cottage industry in Miami-Dade. Win the absentee ballot and you're all but a lock to win the election. It's an expensive, somewhat exclusive club that the average well-intentioned citizen intent on running can't access. Anybody wishing to challenge an incumbent commissioner will get accolades for their courage, a pat on the back and 30% of the vote for their time and trouble.
