The County Commission 101: District 6, Rebeca Sosa. By Geniusofdespair

I decided I would do brief bio’s of the Miami Dade County Commissioners, Eye On Miami style. Some of you might not know a lot about County Commissioners, but you should! So I will do every Commissioner and here is District 6. (also see District 5, links to 1,2,3 and 4 can be found with District 5).

Ah, Rebeca Sosa! Not an official member of the unreformable majority on the Miami Dade County Commission...but she is getting closer. Rebeca is the flamboyant dresser on the County Commission, with a penchant for bright colors and big flowered patterns. She has a chummy relationship with radio personality Martha Flores. Take a look at the photos on Sosa's website (She was co-host) of Martha Flores Annual Holiday Radio Show - 12/17/08. Everyone was there, Ileana, both Mayors, Moss, Joe Martinez, Sanchez, Pete Hernandez, etc.

Rebeca's net worth in 2007:

Was $640,533. She has two homes, one her son lives in, and a trailer in Tavernier. She has a job with the school board making $69,467 per year. She also makes $2,250 a year working for Coral Gables Hospital. Wonder what that is about.

In these photos she is at Villa Aida Senior Center. Her web page says she is bringing "holiday cheer" to the center. She also brought a Mariachi Band. Retirement homes/senior centers are the meccas for votes for County Commissioners: This is their base! As you can see, Rebeca is popular at this particular Center.

Rebeca enthusiastically supported the Marlins Stadium funding.

In her discretionary funds she gave $20,000 in 2007 to the City of Hialeah. Natacha Seijas didn't give Hialeah any funds and it is her district. Sosa gave $20,000 to Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and $10,000 to the Miami Symphony Orchestra. In 2006 she gave $25,000 to Assistance to the Elderly, Inc. and $15,000 to the Miami Dade Book Fair and $15,000 to the Miami Dade College Film Festival.

It appears she is eying the Mayor's seat. Someone should tell her she can't win. She would get few votes east of I95.

And, yes, there is only one "C" in her first name.

I am fortunate to live in a county where the county commissioners are elected countywide. What a difference.Every commissioner listens to all the people; they have to to be re-elected. Here they respond to their constituents, all of them. Districts are toxic. Rebecca and her feathered friends can be elected in a district forever because they dance with their elderly (just like Seijas). But countywide? Won't happen.

What a laugh, her as mayor? Don't think so!

What is scary about this whole post, what if I become one of those people hanging out at senior centers just waiting for my commissioner to come with holiday cheer and a Mariachi Band. Shoot me first.
