Vote "Yes" on Florida's Amendment 6. By Guest Blogger MaritimeMan

HEY ALL OF YOU LOOKING UP AMENDMENT 6 ON ELECTION DAY: HIT ON EYEONMIAMI ABOVE...KEEP COMING BACK!!

Protect Public Access to Florida’s Waterways and Defend Our Working Waterfronts by voting yes on Amendment 6. This is an example of property appraisal gone awry. Lori Parrish, Broward's Property Appraiser, also has an issue with the "Highest and Best Use" philosophy which forces many other users to sell to afford the tremendous property taxes. "Highest and best use" is usually condos. Why should a tugboat operator be taxed at a condo rate?

The Problem
• Public access to Florida’s waterfronts is being taxed out of existence as marine-related businesses are unable to afford higher property taxes.
• The current system of “highest and best use” taxation forces waterfront businesses to be
appraised and taxed upon potential use of the land, such as a high-end condominium or waterfront resort, instead of the current use of the property.

The Solution – Amendment 6:
• Amendment 6 will allow Florida’s marine industry to continue providing Floridians, tourists and
future generations with public access to the state’s waterways and will support the economy
with billions of revenue every year.

What Would Amendment 6 Do?
Amendment 6 would provide tax incentives for landowners who wish to maintain their working
waterfront properties and provide public access to Florida’s waterways. The proposed amendment
simply states the following marine venues and working waterfronts will be taxed at the property’s
current use:
• Marinas and docks open to the public for water access and recreational uses
• Public vessel launches into navigable inland and coastal waterways
• Commercial fishing facilities
• Water-dependent marine manufacturing facilities
• Marine vessel construction and repair facilities

This is a no brainer to keep water dependent uses on the water.

can you please post (non-biased) information for all the amendments we need to vote on.

some are probably extremely important and most people are not interested until they are directly affected.

thanks!

Non biased? I don't think so. Blogs are actually editorials. The newspaper is suppose to do that: report without opinion.

However, when I don't know enough about something I will present both sides. However on 2 i opt for a strong NO and on 6 I think it is a strong yes.

I don't do research for the other side. They have their own blogs.

wow no need to get on the defense.

it was a simple request. i am truly concerned for our county and state. and would love for people (myself included) to vote on all amendments and not ignore them bc they do not know what it is about, or worse just bubble in any answer.

and to make "your side" more clearly known, maybe you should change the name of your blog to "liberal eye on miami".

=)

I am so glad that Geniuys invited this guest blogger! I couldn't agree more. Remember Hometown Democracy? On of the e3lements of "old Florida" that Leslie Blackner decried was the loss of waterfront and the public's access to it. Amendment 6 should address all of that. Some folks have gotten the mistaken idea that this is a "bail out" for a large sector of industry. That is not the case. These are mostly smallfamily businesses that have been harmed to the point of going out of business by the housing bubble. We need to fix it so that Florida waterfront remains accessible to people of more moderate means.

As to you reader who wants info on all the Ballot initiatives, she can find them with pro and con statements on the Florida League of Women Voters website: www:lwvfla.org Look under elections. See Constitutional Amendments, pros and cons. We could all be better informed. Thanks again for sharing this.

Anonymous also said, "Should have done a spell check." Sorry for the typos. And by the way, the League also supports Amendment 6.

Dear No Side: I guess you can characterize this blog anyway you want. Liberal, libertarian, conservative, I would hope you wouldn't put us in a slot.

I was not being defensive, I am, however, ticked that the newspaper isn't doing its job on informing the public on these amendments, and they fall down on the judges too for that matter. I have an oil slick knowledge on most issues and don't really feel qualified to tell anyone what to do nor do. I can tell you what I would do, that could be meaningless. I can make a you tube music link list for you if you email me. That I will do.

Also, I don't agree with the blogger above (after no-side). The Blackner amendment you refer to would do so much more than this -- 6 is one little itty bitty piece of it. For example when the City of Miami tried to change their master plan on the river protection designation: The citizens would have had to vote on that change with Hometown Democracy. This amendment 6 would not have addressed that specific issue. I know a lot about comprehensive plans, ears, hometown democracy etc. I have read through comp plans and gone to ear hearings. So on that, I can say I know pretty much more than the average person.

Amendment 6 is JUST ABOUT TAX RATES. It gets rid of "highest and best use" which are usually apartments/condos that wall off the waterfront from the public. It is not giving the public anything...however the businesses that SERVE the public can remain in business because they are taxed lower.

It has nothing to do with Hometown Democracy's goals.

Could anyone tell me how they have managed to confuse everyone once again on the weather to vote yes or no. The wording could not be anymore vague...
