The Jerry Springer debate: Lincoln Diaz-Balart v Raul Martinez. By SunshineUnderground

Lincoln Diaz-Balart and Raul Martinez just finished debating and I don’t know what to make of it.

What began as a civil discussion quickly disintegrated into accusations, with each candidate interrupting the other. I don’t think either of them looked good. Neither did the moderator. I think I would have changed the channel if I didn’t plan to write about it. Then again, it did have a certain reality-show appeal, like when two roommates on the 'Real Word" start screaming at each other, or any Jerry Springer show ever made (thankfully, without the nudity).

I’d say LDB comes across with more gravitas and was never fazed, but Martinez’s line about LDB saying one thing in Spanish and another in English was also effective. Who won? You tell me.

As far as all the ads between the debates, the RNC one with a wheel of fortune theme attacking Martinez as corrupt was the most memorable.

Martinez- was exposed as a thug! I'm a dist 18 resident, voting for taddeo! I am a life long dem- yet I would never dare vote for Martinez, this guy is a gangster not a dem. he is a disgrace to out party... and hell Diaz-balart was a D I checked his voting record and he's a moderate to semi conservative gop... His line about the press coverage was memorable. I am in no way saying Diaz-Balart is my ideal candidate but he is a true representative of his district! I am at odds with him on Iraq but I urge my fellow dems to not act in desperation one day our party will run a decent opponent martinez is not the right choice... would you send tony montana to DC? No! so why send the real life version?

Looks like the Diaz Balart staff/volunteers have found this blog, that post above is so obvious.

Hialean girl says--

I live in the district currently represented by LDB and will vote for Raul Martinez for Congress. He was a great mayor in Hialeah and he will serve well in Washington.

LDB has become a demagogue in Congress about Cuba issues and many of us don't agree with him. LDB was president of the YOUNG DEMOCRATS as a young man, however, when it became obvious that he could not win a race in that party he became a Republican.

In any event Martinez understands the electorate better than LDB. His positions reflect that. On health care, the economy, finding new energy sorces, reducing taxes for the middle class, etc.

So let's hear it for Raul!

Nope on the ad...We love our X Senator Graham here in Florida so I remember the endorsement commercial for Raul Martinez. It was good to see Bob Graham again.

You can call everyone you want a Diaz-Balart staffer, but in the end, it would be an understatement to say that Martinez is at-least surrounded by controversy.

He is a lobbyist/consultant/whatever you want to call it for developers who have pushed for the expansion of the UDB. He has gotten into streetfights with citizens in the middle of the expressway, he ALLEDGEDLY committed various crimes while in office. He publicly bullies anyone who opposes him.

If the roles were reversed, and these same two candidates were running, only with their party affiliations reversed, this blog would be all over Raul and his record if there were an R after his name.

Listen, Raul Martinez is the corruption connoseur! He would vote to pave over the everglades and his history and track record prove that. He is a power monger and ego maniac who would not do well in Congress. Its his way or the highway. For goodness sake he has already said that he would not work with Ileana in congress...whats up with that? Earth to space, in congress you are one of 400 some odd votes. You have to have an ability to negotiate, cross party lines, deal with people, and accept other people's ideals and agendas. Raul does not have this. Lincoln is much more qualified and experienced to do this for us.

Who could forget how Martinez lied to get the UDB moved in Hialeah in 2005 by promising industrial development for JOBS. Before the ink was dry he started talking professional sports stadium and now it has morphed into residential. The solution he proposed to solve the water problem, Floridan aquafer and reverse osmosis, never had the money. The "developer" went straight to the state for funding.
When that was rejected, the county stepped in to finance the deal on your dime! Lincoln may not be the greatest but his hands are a lot cleaner than Martinez'. I am a Dem but I can not vote for Martinez.

Yet many, many years ago when Raul came on the scene, he was a very charismatic guy who wanted to end the disarray of the Dale Bennett era. he garnered both Repub and Dem support and then later alienated a lot of his most ardent supporters because of his high and mighty attitude and his questionable deals. Yes the parks in Hialeah are nice and the social services too, but the police and firemen have suffered in many instances at his doing. This guy called in every favor owed to him to get his UDB application approved and if he was to ever make it into congress, we'd see more of that there. Interestingly, my democratic family has no qualms about voting for Lincoln in this coming election, and believe me, that is no easy thing for them.
