A Message to Some of the Dumb People Who Were at The Urban Development Boundary Hearing by Geniusofdespair

Many of you commented at the Hearing on Thursday on two applications to MOVE the UDB line to the West. What most of you said that were in favor of one or the other: "People from outside the area are the ones who don't want this application."

Why do you think that is dumb people?

Why do you think people took the time to comment on something in your neighborhood? Why do you think that the Miami Herald had an editorial against the application in your neighborhood, calling denials for both "No Brainers"? Why do you think the State of Florida was against an application in your neighborhood and the head of the Water Management District spoke out against both when approving the consumptive use water permit? Why on earth do you think we all care about the Lowe's store application where they lured you down to county hall dangling land for a school (neither of which they are not paying for) and the Brown application where they promised you a road.

Take that tiny little selfish brain and put it to work. Maybe, just maybe it is not about your neighborhood.

But it IS about their neighborhood...theirs and theirs alone! Miami is the most selfish town in the country. You can tell how people drive, how they act in restaurants and movies, pretty much in the way everything is done..Its all about me, me, me...I say we start spelling the name of the town MIA-ME.

It was very sad to hear the self serving rational from the commissioners who supported the UDB changes. Unfortunately, developers, large law firms, lobbyists, and connected friends swayed 9 votes to lower the quality of life for the majority, to make a few already wealthy more money. Without changing these 9 commissioners, traffic will increase, tax dollars will fund sprawl, quality of life will suffer, and the majority of residents will not be properly represented.

I do not think we can single out immigrants and say that they are dumb. I would not say that at all. What I think happened: I think earnest sounding development flunkies were sent to meetings in the hood and maybe even door-to-door. They know how to manipulate people by appealing to their self interest. I think they characterised people from outside the area as demons. Maybe the PTA talked about how wonderful the project was to the people. These people have no experience with being snowed by developers. I don't think the people were informed of both sides of the issue. But I fault them they didn't try to go beyond their own self serving interest to see the bigger picture.

Naw, no door to door neccesary.
Juan Mayol made his customary telephone call to the neighborhood leaders and they all fell into line.
Just that easy.
You are correct that these folks can't see outside their neighborhoods-I know a person that spoke for the Lowes both times and he doesn't participate in the greater community outside of worrying about things like stop signs needed etc.
The Everglades means nothing to him and water won't be an issue until he turns on the tap and nothing comes out. But then watch him scream and demand that we all chip in and fix HIS problem.
Part of me is hoping that the Lowes deal does not produce a school so that the neighbors will see the folly of their ways.

It will be sweet justice when their "school' turns into a prison. Mayol said they would put an "institutional" use there if the charter school or public school does not work out. Prisons are institutional uses!

We have got to begin to look at the big picture. While everyone is into their little selfish interests, we are only going to be able to survive here if we begin looking at things from a county-wide perspective. As we move further into the everglades and as our farmland disapears, there are a host of questions that confront us: How are we going to provide basic services to these new areas (potable water, sewers, solid waste, transit, etc.); What happens to our overall environment as the everglades cease to exist? How will people in these areas move about as gas approaches $10 per gallon? Will we wish we had our farmland when food becomes scarce and we are all on forced diets, or just go hungry? For a few coins, our whole way of life will be destroyed for now and generations to come.

So what does the new Sustainability Czar do? Where was he on the UDB issues? Of course the county hired him to polish their greenwashing. I doubt he will ever be allowed to do a real job for sustainability.

Hey guys, why would anyone want to hang out here and get shredded by environmentalists with teeth. I am standing where you are, wanting to fight sprawl. But its important to keep a door open and invite people in to learn and talk about environmental matters. Calling them "dumb" or being racist does not serve the purpose. I feel sorry for those parents. They don't understand about sprawl, most of them. Their kids are in crowded schools. Their local government is not being on the level with them. They need to be embraced, reasoned with, educated...not shunned and ridiculed. You are hurting more than helping. Come on. Be nice.

They were booing the environmentalists when they talked. And where is "racist"? If comments are racist it is not the blog. I said everyone was dumb... I was inclusive...taken in by the lobbyist spin.

The prison, I don't think so. Lowes does not want a prison next door. A prison could be built there...under the zoning but it won't.

You know what last reader - I know you mean well but I am tired of reasoning with people who would elect a moron as their president or keep Rolle, Seijas and the likes of them in office. You can do it -- go out and reason all you want...I have no patience anymore. Don't tell me to be reasonable, that is a whole other blog. This one is militant.

has the UTD weighed in on this one?
