Yesterday was opening day at Virginia Key Beach Park and there were about 5,000 (Herald estimate) people there to celebrate. Plenty of good food, picnics and activities. The kids were all enjoying themselves as were all the parents and the extended families.
Correction to the Miami Herald: There is no TILE dance floor. It is cement. And, the Good Rev. Lowery was on a plane home the day before...he did not speak on Saturday.

Hopefully the attendees and the speakers will start making contributions to this boondoggle. So far all the money has come from the taxpayers.
I don't agree. This beach is public. The people use it who live here. Take for example the Ball Park and The Performing Arts Center. Both cost a lot of money to attend. Both have plenty of public money but the masses can't afford to attend these venues on Public Land. The money for a public park seems to be more equitable. Yes money will be wasted, like it is everywhere but I like this oceanfront park.
It is not clear who, if anyone, will attend Virginia Key Beach and museum. Perhaps people are not aware taxpayers have already contributed over $25 mil. That is $25 mil that could have paid for 120 affordable apartments. That is $25 mil that could have been spent to put sidewalks on every street in Overtown and Liberty City.
There are children that have never been to a beach who have lived in Miami their whole life. Let it go....be tolerant.
This park is needed. It is the City's only oceanfront beach. If it is used, good!
