Rudy Giuliani, the Florida presidential primary, and the Everglades, by gimleteye

Dear Mayor Giuliani,

Thanks for coming down to Florida and drawing media attention to the Everglades. When we saw that your escort was Ron Bergeron, the first thought that came to mind was that your staff needs a little tutorial on Everglades politics (hats off, to Bob Norman). You might ask your staff who set up your tour with Mr. Bergeron to answer the following question, by way of understanding the nature of interests that have turned restoration of the Everglades into a pinata for development interests. So here we go, and don't forget to come back to Florida soon!

Ronald Bergeron is to the Everglades as:

a) Big Sugar is to the Everglades Agricultural Area
b) Peabody Coal is to global warming
c) Teflon, to Ronald Reagan
d) Pythons, to the Frog Pond

(See post below by G.o.D.)

From the Norman article:

The land in question consists of 45 acres on a dead-end street at the edge of the Everglades in Weston. The bulk of the land is owned by multimillionaire land baron and developer Ronnie Bergeron, who has pumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into local politics, much of it into School Board races.

"One of the main motivations behind the cowboy-hatted and belt-buckled Bergeron's contributions in the past has been to help him sell his land to the overpaying, bloated bureaucracy at the board. This time, though, he claims he doesn't want to sell, which will force the School Board to go through the costly process of eminent domain to purchase the land."

I am sure that Rudy knew just what he was doing. He really couldn't care less about our Everglades, but he sure wants contributions from Bergeron. Of course if he gets votes from people who do not realize what he is doing, he will be very happy.
