We are going to be in big trouble with the Charter Review. By geniusofdespair

According to Miami Today "Panel blocks Sorenson plan for county charter review". Katy Sorenson, it appears, was trying to do an end run around the awful appointees that we could expect from county commissioners to review our charter. Didn't Miguel DeGrandy participate in reviewing our charter last time? Ick. Double ick.

Sorenson attempted to get community organizations a role in reviewing the County Charter. It makes sense to me. However they blocked the idea and just try to follow this incoherent quote by Audrey Edmonson as to why:

"As commissioners, we are elected to represent the people," said Commissioner Audrey Edmonson. "We should leave it up to us to appoint people to represent ourselves. Seeing people that were not elected by the public representing us" could upset voters.

Are you nuts Audrey? I assure you we voters would be pleased as punch if you did a little less meddling. Sorenson rightly pointed out and let me bold this: "It is an issue of what is right for the community, not just the commission."

Under Sorsenson's plan:

"... a 12-member task force would have been made up of representatives of the League of Cities, the Latin Chamber of Commerce, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, the League of Women Voters and the Human Services Coalition. Each of the county's three law schools, the county's legislative delegation, the chief judge of the 11th Circuit Court and the mayor also would have named a member to the panel."

Boy is this charter review in trouble and it hasn't even started.

I watched online as Sorensons good resolution went down in flames during the Gov't Affairs committee chaired by Seijas.

Seijas doesn't have any interest in having a wide variety of anyone contributing in any way for any kind of democratic process.

I don't believe that any type of board across the state is constructed in this manner. Please someone think of something we can do to oust her!

ultimately it's Commissioner Barreiro's fault for giving her and/or allowing her so much influence.

Commissioner Barreiro is chairman because of her. Did you watch him making the case for Dusty Melton's "mural" ordinance... Seijas practically had to prompt him.

The county commission is a self-important group of misfits who only band together when their empire is threatened. There is nothing to be done but keep putting the word out there, a dumbed down electorate, an ineffective ethics commission, lobbyist power, the catering to groups who actually believe they care about them and the attitude when they are criticized will not be overcome. Look at their priorities a name clearing hearing, complaints about their seats at the PAC, retaliation after the "strong mayor vote" passes. Katy Sorenson has to be so frustrated, I respect her for trying as that is all she can do, she has zero help. She is not going to be getting any either. Scandal after scandal, there is no end. Think about what the potential stories are that we do not know. Thank God for this blog, it has to keep getting the word out, don't give up, don't ever give up, the immortal words of Coach Jimmy Valvano.
