Bad Broward’s Wicked Weston and Look What Ed Easton is bringing to Miami! By Geniusofdespair

Why do I care that Weston site favored for new high school? Because this school is an EVERGLADES issue and I am paying for the restoration of the Everglades!

Look on your tax bill people. There is a line item for Everglades (CERP) cleanup. One percent of your taxes goes to Everglades Construction projects. This is one of those projects YOU are paying for and Weston is throwing up roadblocks.

Weston wants to build a $100M High School next to the proposed Water Preserve Areas vital to Everglades Restoration. They are preparing a Resolution in opposition to this important Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Project (CERP). The water preserve area project is critical for the restoration of the Everglades. The lights from football/baseball games at the school would also cause problems for the wildlife. The City Manager of Weston has everyone up in arms against the project now.

According to an EYE reader: The Weston School proposal is even more offensive because the school is slated for a mitigation area - an area that was set aside to make up for wetland impacts when the Weston development was completed. Mitigation areas are supposed to be untouchable - and typically they are.

See, this is what happens when you let a city go up in a really, really stupid place like Weston.

And, speaking of stupid placement of Cities, here in Miami-Dade,

Ed Easton is moving forward with his project, West of SW 167 Avenue and North of SW 152nd Street (to 136 Street). Ed is a mega developer and Jeb Bush's pal. He has said he wants to build another Weston in Miami-Dade. Well, thanks Ed, that’s just what we need.

Ed owns 960 acres (640 acres is a square mile) and he has a mega city planned. He wants to build his new city with over 7,000 homes (about 21,000 people). He will be taking this to the Miami Dade County Commission in the next 90 days or so. Watch out! It is called Parkland. Read about Parkland. One day as the City of Parkland expands, we will have them clamoring for schools on the edge of the Everglades just like Bad Broward’s Wicked Weston.

Just what South Florida needs is more gridlocked sprawl in areas that need to be planned with a long range vision, not developers trying to maximize as much profit as possible now

The Weston School proposal is even more offensive because the school is slated for a mitigation area - an area that was set aside to make up for wetland impacts when the Weston development was completed. Mitigation areas are supposed to be untouchable - and typically they are. But in a case, like this one, where there is a higher public need (like a fire station or school) the environment loses.

The City of Weston should own up to their commitments and not undercut the futures of their children and grandchildren by developing a mitigation area. Mitigation lands are not only important to wildlife, they are important for flood control and water supply - two things the City should be concerned about.

No doubt there are alternative sites in the City that would be suitable for a school, but also no doubt that the City is holding those aside for future land uses that generate property taxes for them to spend. And once again, the almighty dollar is leading the decision-making. How sad!

And as for the Parkland development. The Kendall Federation of Homeowners Associations and other civic groups in Kendall better be paying attention. Once the application to move the UDB is complete, this application is going to move full steam ahead at the County. If the people along the Kendall corridor don't take ownership of this issue, they will have no one but themselves to blame for worse traffic, worse schools, and an all around worsening quality-of-life in suburban sprawl hell.

Geniusofdespair - you should research and report on who the consultants and lobbyists are for Parkland so the people of Kendall know what they are up against!

Where is Roy Rogers. He'll make sure it all goes away.

Is Roy still out there?

And just to think that this was one of the civic leaders" put in charge of "righting" the School board.
