Democracy? Really? ... by guest blogger

Really? Democracy?

Hillary Clinton won the election by 2,865,000 votes. She is not President.

67% of Americans support a ban on assault weapons. There is no such ban.

68% of Americans believe climate change is being caused by human activity. Our government denies it and refuses to act.

79% of Americans believe abortion should be legal under any (50%) or some (29%) circumstances. There is no Federal protection for these services and access continues to shrink.

By similar majorities, Americans want to protect the nation's air and water and the Everglades. Our legislatures are more firmly in the hands of polluters than any time in modern history.

So, please explain how we live in a democratic country.

"So, please explain how we live in a democratic country."

Hmmm, I'm often being reminded that we live in a Republic here.

May be plutocratic crony capitalism will give you a hint.

I know, it's hard to accept, I remember how devastated I was when I found out there was no Santa Claus.

If you want your democracy back, we have to swing away from capitalism and embrace socialism. Then, if we find corruption with socialism, we can swing a little more to the right. The Capitalist have given this country over to the rich. If you are not above a certain level of income, you are not actively participating in the government as it is run today. It is not a government that is operating for the best interest of the people, it is operating in the interest of large corporations. They tell you it will "trickle down", but that moisture you feel is them pissing all over you.

"Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?"
"A Republic, if you can keep it."

Response attributed to Benjamin Franklin at the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, when queried as he left Independence Hall on the final day of deliberation, in the notes of Dr. James McHenry, one of Maryland's delegates to the Convention. McHenry's notes were first published in The American Historical Review, vol. 11 (1906), and the anecdote on p. 618 reads: "A lady asked Dr. Franklin Well Doctor what have we got a republic or a monarchy. A republic replied the Doctor if you can keep it."

Well now we know the answer to Franklin's Query. We can't keep it because motivated by our greed and prejudice we (especially elderly and rural voters) vote in people who pander to us.

A GREAT column by "Guest Blogger." Sincere thanks. We owe this blog a great deal and thank you for providing a local platform that has not been available at this level since the days of the late, great Neil Rogers. ---Mr. Miami Memorabilia.

Reactionary public opinion legislation sounds like a great idea

What baffles me about both major political parties today is how neither one is steering with the people on important issues. With that being said, I am a broken woman - not totally right (but not leftist) - divided on many issues and stuck in the middle. But, I do believe the United States must be a country of law and order.

Immigrants who come here must pass through legally, especially nowadays. At the same time, there has to be better relationships with Latin America, the Caribbean islands and Canada; these are our neighbors and we have to get along. Why are the governments of these countries failing their own citizens and forcing them to escape? Why have we allowed communism and oppression to exist for so long in Cuba? What about the corruption, poverty and despair in Haiti?

In Mexico, there is huge class division. Mexico is a rich country with oil, gold, silver, copper, tourism, agriculture, and one of the best literary, artistic and cinematography industries in the world, yet they struggle with so much poverty, drugs and crime? People in the hospitality industry are also among the best and many speak English. The government of our countries should work together to protect our borders, fight crime and allow all our citizens an opportunity to rise out of poverty by their own merits, by creating a solid educational system that is equal for all.

But, the United States, like any other country, must abide by laws. Let's be centrist and think of ways to get out of this mess!

The Electoral College is supposed to give all states equal voice. This is why Donald Trump won . . . and because we wanted to shake up Washington, D.C. so that both side would wake up. Hasn't worked yet.

I still believe in the concept of the electoral college, because a national election cannot be determine by big cities on the East and West coasts alone. All those people in middle America deserve a voice . . . and most to them voted from Trump - and those of us who want to protect American industry and livelihood. Is anybody listening?
