I knew Marco before Mackle bought the whole Island for $6 million. We camped there on the beach and caught my first snook. Saw giant manta rays, porpoise and many fish. Should have been kept for a state or Ntl park. There were plenty of mangrove shorelines where millions of sealife lived, many gopher tortoise, panther, bobcat, rare bird species, eagles, Calusa Indian mounds, much history with the pioneer settlements of Marco, Goodland and Caxambas. It was a pristine and beautiful land. The developers came in and ripped out miles of mangrove and put in miles of seawalls, built houses and hotels and destroyed a bountiful ecosystem for the sake of making more money. One of the many sad stories of Florida's over-development.
