1965: James Baldwin vs. William Buckley. By Geniusofdespair

MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN....for white folks. We haven't moved very far from what James Baldwin said (in this debate) in the past fifty years.

Start at 14 minutes...James Baldwin.

Historic debate between James Baldwin v. William F. Buckley Jr. at Cambridge University on the question: "Is the American Dream at the expense of the American Negro?"

Thanks for sharing as it is important to look back at the distance travelled. In 1965 both Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were still living and they would be assassinated three years after this debate in 1968. Generationally and within our laws and institutions, we have come a long way. However there remains much work to be done on a wide variety of levels. Ideas remain out there, but each generation must continue to fight the fight. Trump has simply tapped into old ideas, and like him, they will soon fall off the scene.

Interestingly, Kennedy's prediction of our first Black President was close. He said in 40 years we could have our first Black President. That would have been 2005. Obama began his Presidency in 2009, only a four-year difference in his prediction. And 44 years after this debate, Obama was sitting in the Oval Office. A lot of blood, sweat, tears, work, determination, growth, and development got us here as a country.
