Trashing the Airport Director - Is it truly deserved? By Geniusofdespair

Two County Commissioners joined at the hip, were trashing the Airport Director -- is this Angela Gittens all over again, Natacha Seijas certainly trashed her for hinting everything wasn't kosher with airport contracts. And then Gittens was gone. Same with Frank Nero - a character assassination by Lynda Bell and then he is out.

I am concerned that this trashing might be the result of  nepotism -- a relative that did not get a promotion. Bad Commissioner Blood run amok!!

Stop it! Be professional. It is bad enough almost all the Commissioners have relatives in all Departments. We don't need retribution, suck it up like the rest of us.

Gimenez transferred one relative over to Lester Sola. The Herald asked for the personnel file. Commissioners need to be careful.

I was wondering why Commissioner Moss kept ranting about the airport. It's so obvious now. I wonder how many other Commissioners do the same.

They want that position for the Now available Bill Johnson.

When pipelining occurs, my department inherited ex-mayors God mothers who barely knew english and had no computer skills.
I've also met complete incompetents who had highly esteemed titles due to political placements who were unable to correctly answer a
Telephone.

They have one division director out there who wants to be king. He is driving people nuts and his entire team micro manages.

It can't be comfortable for the airport director, who comes with great credentials, to have to nest in building that has a commissioners spouse, even if she is nice, and all the recycled ex-commission staff and mayoral staff placed there. It is kinda like having built in spies to feed back info to others who want their person in place. How can you build a team, when your plans are repeated (probably not so correctly) and pulled apart BEFORE they can be completed and implemented?

Unfortunately for the current director, there were people left in place who coveted his job. And they are not aviation people. I would love to know how many of the county staff there are aviation people. How many pilots are in the bunch? The true operations people at MIA are all retiring or in drop. We have people coming into power who are political and not aviation trained except by what they see daily. Going to the 6th floor doesn't give you a clue as to how to run a transportation system. At least the current director understood public transportation and was well know for his abilities.

Character assassination by the County commissioners of administrators who try and do the right thing is a blood sport in County Government.

Bell was the shill for the Tea Party Mayor and Gambling interests.(including Beacon board members who were on the Genting Gravy train ) who wanted Nero out because he had the audacity to warn them about the negative impacts of destination casino gambling (see Atlantic city).

Only a few months after the board had voted without a one negative vote to renew his contract ..Jose Abru probably one the the best Airport directors Miami Dade had also became a punching bag and couldn’t leave the county fast enough..Gittens..story is well known and the list goes on and on...

The major criteria for hiring people and staying in a position in Miami Dade is to do whatever the Mayor and Commission want including helping their “friends..relatives ..campaign contributors and lobbyists..” feed off the county largess.

Folks might be right. Bill Johnson always coveted the Airport Directors Job (and Beacon”s ). They already have a yes man at Beacon so Look out Airport Director. If Johnson starts patting you on the back he is only looking for a soft place to stick the knife.

The Avation Department has been a political dumping ground for many years

GENIUS, the airport has issues. Facts: A Spanish firm and an African-American firm competitively bid and won concession contracts at the same time in the same food court. They both were promised that the airport would present a request to the commission to extend their contracts due to disruptions caused by construction delays. The Spanish firm got a 10 year extension in 2011. The African-American firm was denied an extension by the airport. They were sent a letter by the Deputy Director of the airport in 2016 stating that in addition to not getting an extension like the Spanish firm got and as the airport promised, that their concession spaces in the food court would be rebidded out. How is that fair? It is not and the airport when confronted on the issue, acknowledged at the meeting that it was not fair. The airport only reversed it's position when I raised the issue about the disparate treatment. The Director stated on the record that 2 of his employees including his Deputy Director sent the letters out in error. I don't buy that and there is written documentation that disputes that contention. Add to that the controversy that was created when the Director brought forward a no bid contract for his friends at Bongos and Perry Ellis.

He should follow the example of corrupt Port Director Kuryla and employ all the friends and family and also send them all on trade missions paid by taxpayers.

Under a strong mayor form of government, there is only person that is accountable, for both the alleged systemic racism and the rumors of political patronage. Carlos Gimenez is the one who promotes and assigns the politically connected, and ultimately decides which vendor receives preferential treatment. Both the racism and the patronage are wrong, and it all flows from the same source: Mayor Gimenez. If people want to clean up county government, they will have to remove the head of the snake. Mail-in ballots will be available in July. Don't forget to vote.

I hope Commissioner Moss reads the posted comment above this one. Wrong target. Nothing in the county is done without Carlos' blessings.

Right and right. Stop scapegoating department heads.

There is a reason Giminez gave Kuryla a 70% salary increase and promotion to director without any background check, which Kuryla never would have passed.

Thank you Commissioner Moss for your response. Please put forth a charter amendment change that eliminates the strong mayor form of government in Miami Dade County.
