Big Sugar is pouring lobbyists into Tallahassee in proportion to its pollution of the Caloosahatchee, the SW coast of Florida, the Indian River, St. Lucie, and Atlantic coast.

The state legislature and Gov. Rick Scott have consistently undermined and eroded tough pollution laws and enforcement measures in Florida. Our Congressional delegation, including US Senator Marco Rubio and US Senator Bill Nelson, could have effectively argued for a muscular U.S. EPA to deal with phosphorous, nitrogen, and sulfate pollution. Yes, the trade associations like Associated Industries of Florida and the Florida Chamber of Commerce and Big Sugar are responsible for pay-to-play politics that are deforming representative democracy. Voters and taxpayers are bearing the costs of pollution in Florida, but they are also responsible for supporting incumbents who have taken a wrecking ball to the state, to our quality of life, and to the environment on which so many businesses and so much property value depend.
