Homestead: People in Poverty. By Geniusofdespair

Look at the percentage of people living below the poverty level in Homestead: Almost 30%
From Census

Let's make a comparison to Pinecrest, right down the road....

Persons living below the poverty level: 6.1%
I don't think we want to look at Florida City...but we will.

Almost half the people live in poverty in Florida City. What is wrong with this picture?  Maybe the Mayor for Life can't do anything right for his community. They  certainly gave him enough time. How long has he been in office for 30 years (or close to it)?
Certainly you can't blame the politicians for this because the education levels of the residents are abysmal.  6% of Florida City residents have a Bachelor's degree. Only 55% have graduated high school.  In Pinecrest 64% have a Bachelor's degree and the high school graduate rate is at 95%. What you need in theses poverty stricken areas is training for jobs. GOVERNMENT should invest in training for the jobs available. Instead they spend money on housing and stuff that does not lift the people up.

What's your point on Homestead poverty? You supported porter a few years ago and other homestead politicians largely responsible for those numbers.

No, look at the education levels of the people. Maybe they all went to Dade Medical College. Porter was no great shakes, but an out of work plumber's assistant running a highly mortgaged, under utilized hotel was not the better choice.

You need some education.

As much as it would pain you to admit, an out of work assistant plumber and small business owner, may have a whole lot more empathy and commitment to helping folks out of poverty then the Porters, Shivers, Losners, and other members of the "good old boy" network that don't give a shit about poverty or education levels in their city.

It wouldnt pain me. Empathy does not solve problems. A brain does. Half a brain gets you nowhere

Thanks for the healthy exchange... But you're making my point. Exactly. The people with the brains have been governing homestead. Attorneys. Real estate brokers. Teachers etc. and look we're we are at.

No one with brains has been governing Homestead. You expect a half wit who cant even string a sentence, contolled by his wife, to have been better? Thanks Lynda for your comments.

I admit you are wrong. mark Bell was not a viable candidate. Finished on that insane point of yours.

I am not buying Homestead's per capita income which is represented at twice the income of the state's per capita income. It seems the migrant communities were not counted as well as Homestead's SW area.

Sorry read it wrong. That number I do believe. Very sad state of affairs.

Police departments will just have to make sure they segregate these communities.

Bill Losner always said these problems would be solved by growth and development. Where is old Bill now?

I'm very disappointed in you, G.O.D. I was born and raised in Homestead and still live here. It's a good place to live - not everyone can have an income of $200,000+, like you, apparently. I've subscribed to Eye on Miami for about 4 years but I'm done with you now. Gone.

Bill is in the Keys as far as he can get from those "migrants" and the section 8 ghost towns left behind.

Anon two above. It's a great place to live if you are from a third world country or Florida City.

To anon above stating 4 years subscribing to EOM----hay fella, if it hadn't been for EOM & its many readers and contributors this county would be more corrupt
and readers less informed.
This blog brought down a commissioner and a mayor in great style.
Anon-- Better you be grateful for this watch dog reporting.

The "po folks" in Homestead are smart enough to stay in the position of being paid to cast their absentee ballots the way the handlers of the politicians want them to vote, all in exchange for a few bucks to hold signs on election day.

Excuse me but what about Liberty City, Overtown, Opa-Locka, North Miami, Sweetwater, Hialeah, Hialeah Gardens, etc?

They're not exactly "Boomtowns."

These, little "fiefdoms," including Homestead and Florida City are run with folks who have moderate to advanced degrees.

What's their excuse for their own poverty levels? They've had their chance and nothing gets better.

maybe an average "joe" would do much better. You don't know if you don't let them.

Florida City falls often into a kind of ridiculous problem where it's treated as nothing more than a quick shopping stop for visitors to the Keys. If there's any room for development it's in commercial and I don't mean more national chain retail. It's not really a community as much as a dead mall that happens to host a few farm workers.

Homesteader:
It can be a good place to live, especially if you have some money and some education.
If you have neither, then it might not matter where you live.
Why take it out on Genius who's just trying to report and be ab advocate for the people in that area?
You should be thankful for an attempt to get people to see what's going on there and help.

What tends to happen is the area becomes a magnet for others in a similar situation. Isn't it better to have it play out where there is success, others see that success and follow suit?
At some point the government will be unable to provide for those who don't want a better life and are content in Florida City and Homestead on less than $8,000 and $18,000 a year respective to both towns.
Free food, free education, free healthcare and free housing will be a competition between the home grown poor and the new immigrants who are coming now. The math does not compute.

Well now. I have lived in Homestead for years and it is a great place. It's people like Sincore, Losner, Shriver, Bateman and Porter that have caused this city to be where it is. Good or bad suck it up and live it. By the way, rumor has it from a very good source in a local bank that one of these guys listed above is stealing from his family's business. Really, can't he find a real job? LOL!!

These stats are sad. If I were a politician in Homestead/Florida City I would put a sack over my head.
