FL Congressman Alcee Hastings calls Texas "crazy"! … by gimleteye
I'm pretty sure I woke up thinking what a crazy state, this is. But then Alcee Hastings reminded me there is always someone younger, more beautiful, and more crazy than you.

This is the Alcee Hastings I know. I loveee him he takes no shit.
In 2012, Hastings was ranked No. 1 out of 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives for paying salaries and fees to family members by the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch.[24] A 300-page report published by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington found that Hastings paid his girlfriend $622,574 over the four-year period 2007-2010
It isn't the bad politicians who are ruining our country, it is the vulgar, uneducated public who elects them and applauds them for their improprieties in the name of being "cool" and "hip". Here we have a perfect example. Alcee Hastings is one of the lowest life forms ever. He stands for everything that is wrong with our society. And yet we find him being lauded by blog owners and posters alike. Even referring to his accomplishments in the same tawdry and vulgar terminology.
Alcee Hastings is in Congress, and he'll die a member of Congress because his constituents, the people who actually live in his district, like him and what he does. They don't give a shit about what party elites of either party (read White folks) think about him or what selective prosecutions they can come up with. They live in communities where 1/3 of their young men go to prison.
And they certainly don't care what blog commentators on EOM think.
I've met Hastings on several occasions. He's a smart, intelligent and well-informed man. And, yes, a survivor who can play sarcasm against his opponents with natural ease.
Yet I've seen this clip, obviously funny because of its obvious sarcasm, described by very active (White) Democratic Party supporters as Hastings "going thug" and "gangster". They think that's funny.
How about our other famous sarcastic representative from Florida, Allan Greyson? Apparently lacking both the experience and intellect of Hastings, he seems to me to be the quintessential blowhard. Our blowhard, to be sure, but blowhard nonetheless. I understand he may run for the Senate. What racist slurs do we have at hand for him? Obviously none that come to mind as easily as "thug" and "gangster".
Congress is not the place softies, or people who are faint of heart. To get things done there for constituents and the nation, you have to be strong and have balls. Otherwise, what good are you to anyone in that role? Everyone there as beaten out all the little dogs in their communities to get to Congress. So, everyone there is a big dog. To operate successfully in that environment you can not be weak. They look for blood in the water.
Whatever you might think of the Congressman, you can blame Republican gerrymandering for his continued re-election. Check out his district, they carved out Democrat (largely African American and poor) portions of Hendry, Palm Beach and Broward counties. His district includes urban and inner-city areas of Broward and rural areas around Lake Okeechobee, like Pahokee and Belle Glade. They carved out Dems and put them in one district to keep other areas safe for Republicans. So now he has a safe Democratic district. You want better people in Congress? Stop the gerrymandering.
Unfortunately beyond the surface some people don't know who he is. He is a civil rights attorney who was there for the Black community when the state of Florida made sure there were few Black lawyers. For decades, it was him who answered the calls for help, and sought justice for families all over the state of Florida. I certainly hope he writes his book before he goes. His professional life experiences would provide a huge slice of Florida history for generations to come.
I have known Alcee Hastings since he ran for US Senate in 1970 in the race won by Laston Chiles. Congressman Hastings is far and away one of the top 10 speechmakers in Congress and can get his point across with incisive wit, pointed sarcasm, and just a straight, quick, tell it like it is. He doesn't pull any punches and is the guy you want on your side. Also be advised that he was eventually vindicated of the allegations against him and went on to become very knowledgable in foreign relations although denied the committee chairmanship.

Alcee Hastings, a Democrat, was impeached for bribery and perjury (by a Democrat-controlled House) and convicted (by a Democrat-controlled Senate)
He was found guilty of accepting $150,000 in exchange for handing out a light sentence and of 21 counts of racketeering.
This made my day. It was hysterical. I don't care if he did bribe, at least he has balls.
He has BASKETBALLS. We need more men like him.
So much to admire. That's our money.
Charges of nepotism

You DO have more men AND women like him.
He is as crooked as they come!

When I first saw this on The Daily Show I thought it was hysterical. Now that I read about his background, not so much.
How stupid are his constituents to keep him in office.
Another reason we need term limits for Congress.
I agree with Anon above. It's become so important to be hip and cool that values don't matter.
Hastings was a crooked judge . . . the most corrupt judge in our lifetime.
Your left-wing blog's support for Hastings only documents that liberals have no ethics and celebrate corruption.
Funny is funny. This was funny, getting under the skin of that stuffed shirt.
Indeed. How can your blog support a crooked public servant? How can your opinions be credible after that?
Oh, the moralists are out in force!

And he is very personable with a great sense of humor.
