A New Year's Resolution: The Achievers … by gimleteye

If one wants to understand the DNA of a place, it is important to study history but also the stories of one's time. I resolve to help a few achievers tell their stories in 2015 that one can't read or see in the mainstream media.

"The Achievers" is a borrowed phrase from Miami Today. In that weekly paper, the measurement of achievement is calibrated to the business community. I once asked the Miami Herald why it never, ever recognized civic activists who challenge the status quo on the environment. Never got an answer.

So in 2015, I will boost for Eye On Miami readers a more inclusive view of achievers for our community, to help understand the DNA of our place. These will be interviews with people who deserve to be recognized for their commitment to our community but are not, at least by the mainstream media.

If you have interview-worthy "achievers", please add them to the comment section here or email me: alanfarago@me.com

At the Southeast Overtown Park West CRA meeting on December 29th where all five City of Miami Commissioners gave away perhaps $280 Million of tax dollars intended to help the Overtown ghetto there were many very smart opponents. Keon Hardemon and Mark Sarnoff were the main salesmen for Nitin Mowani, the beneficiary of the $280 Million gift. Many speakers from Overtown were very eloquent. They were opposed to the giveaway. Speakers from something called the Florida New Majority were excellent and Grace Solares presented a Resolution from the Urban Environment League that was met with loud applause.

Miami Today has Ernesto Perez as one of its achievers.

The history of Overtown in my lifetime has been one of bait and switch, promises given and promises broken, hope generated and despair immediately following. If you were to sum up the money allocated to supposedly "help" the community over the years, it would total in the hundreds of billions. It is simply a cash cow for others off the backs of the poor as nothing ever trickles down to the people who actually live there. Because it never arrives, it is a perpetual money machine for others. Need money? Simply propose something for Overtown, and bingo you have plenty with no accountability.

Gimleteye, it's about time (said in a nice way) that you take the lead on this and showing the media how it's really done.

Thank you for being a leader simply by show of best example for all to see, and the place to come for realistic information.

That would be RNA - those are some nasty viruses.

Does this mean they'll get me a new bicycle? Bob Welsh

The State of Florida should investigate Keon Hardemon, his three uncles, Alan, Roy, Billy, and his aunt Barbara and consider indictments of all of them over the rape and plundering going on in Overtown. Hardemon is the Chair of the Southeast Overtown Park West CRA and his giving away the taxpayers money to connected insiders needs to be stopped. Marc Sarnoff is a co-conspirator.

A WORTHY IDEA! IT IS TIME THAT WE HEAR/READ MUCH, MUCH LESS ABOUT THE COLLECTIVE OF BANKERS, ATTORNEYS, VESTED INTERESTS, POLITICIANS AND SIMILAR "MOVERS AND SHAKERS", AND MORE - MUCH MORE - ABOUT THOSE WHO TEND TO TOIL IN OBSCURITY THROUGH LOVE OF COMMUNITY AND DEDICATION TO OTHERS. WHO CARES IF MR. SMITH WAS MADE A PARTNER AT THE XYZ LAW FIRM? HOW ABOUT THE MR. SMITH WHO VOLUNTEERS AT THE LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL? OR THE MS. JONES, A VOLUNTEER WHO VISITS THOSE WHO ARE HOME-BOUND BECAUSE OF ILLNESS? OR THE VOLUNTEER GYMNASTICS COACH AT THE JUNIOR HIGH?
THE ESSENCE OF THE STRENGTH OF OUR COMMUNITY IS ROOTED IN THE GOOD WORKS - WITHOUT FINANCIAL RECOMPENSE - OF SUCH DEDICATED AND CARING FOLKS, WHO DO WHAT THEY DO, FOR LOVE AND CARING, AND NOT FOR CASH!

Ted Baker writes the truth. Many citizens contribute immensely to our community acting purely as volunteers. Respect for citizens and respect for the quiet effective volunteers.

Well said! I think everyone will agree with you on this.
