Recommendation for Miami Herald: publish a brief "news from around the state"… by gimleteye

In recent years, the Miami Herald has not only become more narrowly focused on trivial entertainments, it has also become more parochial. For example, its editorial capacity never maintained the work of Martha Musgrove who wrote intelligently and insightfully on public policies related to water management including the Everglades.

Pythons get Herald space these days, not Big Sugar or the continued massive pollution of estuaries north of Broward County.

The recent report by the National Academy of Sciences criticizing Congress and governmental efforts to restore the Everglades was noted by the Herald, especially for the connection to the threats from climate change and sea level rise. But generating a multi-county focus requires newspapers to extend their reach beyond the narrow and parochial.

The Herald ought to cover much more intensely the massive water quality problems in Martin County and Palm Beach, through the St. Lucie. It ought to provide more coverage of the ongoing politicization of the state's water management districts in favor of builders and developers and the continued retreat by state government from enforcement actions against polluters.

One of the ways I get news, is a state aggregator provided free of charge, "Above the Fold", by Kevin Cate Communications. It gives a brief snapshot of the front page of the state's newspapers. I know it's not much, but it gives a sense of what readers and newspapers believe is important enough to be above the fold.

How difficult could it be for the Herald to publish a similar aggregation that focuses on region-wide issues of serious consequence? Oh, I forgot, for the Miami Herald it's all about professional athletes making more tens of millions of dollars per season in the colosseum.

WWW.sayfiereview.com is also a good aggregator of state news. It also includes and editorial ticker, a florida political blog ticker and a twitter ticker.

Except like Sunshine State News it skews to the extremist right.

El Nuevo Herald has a little better reporting on broader issues than The Herald.
