U.S. Coast Guard Tall Ship, Eagle, will be docked at the FEC slip that Beckham and investors want to fill in. Remember it was Carlos Gimenez pushing the idea to Beckham. |
Once a German ship in 1936, it is now part of the spoils of war. They restored the parlor of the 295 foot ship as it was when Hitler occupied it. It is eeire to visit the ship and think of its history when you are in it. The US got the tall ship in May 1946. "The USCGC Eagle (WIX-327) (formerly the SSS Horst Wessel) is a 295-foot barque used as a training cutter for future officers of the United States Coast Guard. She is the only active commissioned steel hulled sailing vessel in American military service."
You can visit the ship after its arrival on June 14th at 10a.m. It Departs June 17th. I would suppose the slip will be guarded by the Coast Guard, will find out for you. Don't know if kayaks will be allowed but you can certainly picnic nearby and visit the ship. Last time the Eagle was in town it had thousands of visitors a day, many were school children. I wonder if David Beckham will tour the ship.
The Coast Guard HAS JUST REQUESTED THAT NO ONE FROM THE PUBLIC ENTER THE SLIP WITH WATERCRAFT WHILE THE EAGLE IS THERE.
Here is the history of the FEC slip with some great photos from Curbed Miami, I have a suspicion some photos are mine, and mention of an early deed.

Carlos Gimenez is the Mayor of Miami-Dade County. His background is 30+ years as a member of the Fire union. He has no education or background as an architect, landscape architect or planner. He has a well known hatred for parks. The City of Miami needs a Commissioner to step up and say, "Hell No, we will not allow a massive building on the City's Museum Park".
The Miami police and fire union wants a third stadium. If the unions do not get another off-duty place to work they are going to raise hell.
Miami Police and Fire Unions can advocate for a sports stadium anywhere west of Biscayne Blvd. The 1,500 condos across the street from Museum Park and the proposed new condo on 10th and Biscayne are worth $1.5 Bil. $2.0 Bil. More after the Hadad condo is built on 10th Street. Does anyone know how much they pay in RE taxes? Every year? Do Police and Fire want those values (and taxes) reduced by 25%?
Great news! Surely this will call some attention to what the Beckham folks want to get rid of. come on out Mayors -- take a tour -- we won't make you walk the plank! (at least not yet ...)
Commissioner Suarez! Are you the man to step up to the Gimenez lunacy?
Which Suarez? Xavier or Francis?
I want the Mayors and all Commissioner from the BCC & the City of Miami who think this is a good idea to walk the plank! We could sell tickets. I bet we could get some real sharks brought in too.
Years back, wasn't the replica of the Santa Maria, sailed from Spain, docked in the slip?
The City of Miami will not approve the use of this slip for a stadium. The clock will run out before an item can be prepared for the November ballot. The City is just stringing Gimenez along so they don't offend him. (He is a bit of a prick when he doesn't get his way.) Beckham should get busy scoping out another site. Quit wasting time on this location, and let's bring the MLS to Miami.
Xavier Suarez!
There was the Aristad there a while ago.
Dozens of sites have been identified. It appears John Alshuler and Beckham's handlers want to "Bend It Like Jeff Loria". They want a site given to them by novice Mayors. Smells like Marlins Repeat?
On this sixth day of June in commemoration of the landing at Normandy, let's hope the Feds will one day land at the shores of this great city and cleanup it up of the fascists and corrupt stewards running the biggest racket on the US mainland.
Xavier Suarez becomes the first Commissioner to speak Truth to Power. Suarez politely ridicules Gimenez's and Beckham's scheme to have the City of Miami give away a priceless waterfront park.
Beckham's group wants to pay a paltry $500,000 annually for rent on the precious waterfront when the City of Miami wants fair market value of 20 times that? That sounds like a major stumbling block to me, but this whole idea of this stadium at the deepwater boat slip is ridiculous and I am ashamed of county mayor Gimenez for proposing it.
I've never known a super intelligent firefighter or fire chief, and I've met many, so this doesn't really surprise me but you would think he would have accumulated more knowledge as a city manager, county commissioner and a couple of years as county mayor. The pet initiative rejection after the straw ballot was approved was his first major screwup and now this is his second. Mayor Gimenez should stick to pissing off PBA chief hog John Rivera which is his greatest attribute and truly benefitting the public.
