Picture of the Day: Dolphins Swimming in the FEC Slip. By Geniusofdespair

As a resident of the Marquis located at 1100 Biscayne Bay for over 3 and half years, I wanted to share the fact that the ecosystem in the FEC slip is thriving. I’ve attached a photo of a dolphin family and baby, I see frequently when walking my dogs.  There are at least 2-3 manatee that use the slip for shelter and sunbathing during early morning. The local “shrimpers” troll during full moon events at the entry of the slip.

We are all meeting at the slip "Occupy Museum Park" on June 14th by utilizing it as a public space: enjoying picnicking kayaking, boating, etc. We meet by the boat slip. The Coast Guard tall ship EAGLE will be in the slip that weekend. You can get a tour of the former Nazi built warship and learn about its history, like how we ended up with it.

Also see Channel 6 Video, Nurse sharks and coral.

Great photo. Please post more. The FEC slip and Bicentennial Park are irreplaceable. The park renovation is almost finished. Beckham wants a 90' tall wall of concrete facing all directions. Perfect for criminals to hide. Tell Mayor Regalado, "Hell No".

A baby dolphin could be the new symbol for Occupy Museum Park movement. Order the T-shirts!
Let's put on a show of support for our waterfront to Beckham and his real estate "advisors."

most astonishing realization this week? educated middle and upper class western burbs folks from both dade and broward think this is the BEST place for the soccer stadium! these folks would never use this for "public park" space so not sure why i was so surprised to hear it.
come on folks, get down there on 6/14!

Someone in one of the high rises across the street should set up a Museum Park/Bay Cam to document the park users and wildlife. And a website and social media sites where all the photos can be posted. What's the best hashtag?
#FECWildlife #MuseumPark #BeatItBeckham

Condominium owners are already screwed. The state is going to okay the filling of this slip. It might take longer than possible but it will be done.

David Beckham’s agreement with MLS to purchase an expansion team at a discounted rate of $25 million expires on Dec. 31, according to league commissioner Don Garber.

Six months and counting, Tick, tick, tick...

Do I smell soccer sweat?

Not so fast on State OK to fill in an aquatic preserve - November election! Once Scott and friends are out, maybe Florida DEP will be revamped to actually protect the environment in Florida and not be a an accommodation tool for developers

Wouldn't count on that …

I wouldn't worry those baby dolphins will be swimming in Little Havana some day soon.

From a new times article:
" real estate adviser John Alschuler denies that filling the boat slip would affect any important marine life, however.

"There are no artificial reefs in the slip," he says in an email to New Times. "There is one 'artificial reef' in each of the two 'notches' on the eastern face of the Museum Park seawall, but that is it. And 'artificial reef' is really an over-characterization of what it is -- a pile of limestone boulders maybe 50x50 feet that serves primarily as a breakwater. The piles were there well before 2009 and will not in any way be impacted by what we are proposing."

Ben Mostkoff, whose Shoreline Foundation built the seawall and added the limestone boulders, says it technically isn't an artificial reef but rather "on-site mitigation which results in the creation of a habitat." He admits, though, "I'm being a bit of a nerd here. It's semantics, really. The result is very similar."

"Three layers of government -- county, state, and federal -- will review our requests to fill the slip," Alschuler adds. "As a result of that process, and our own commitment, we are confident that water quality and aquatic habitat will be improved by our proposal."

Like many of our city officials, the folks pushing for beckham's stadium ignore the fact that our public spaces are meant to benefit the public. The FEC slip is just finishing up a $15million+ taxpayer funded renovation. It will be a magnet for tall ships and other interesting seagoing craft. Soccer stadiums can be built almost anywhere. Ships, etc., need a slip. Go away Beckham, et al, go away...NW 17 Avenue is calling.

The city should test the park soil and the water in the slip again. This park has a bad history. Testing in 2010 uncovered underground fuel tanks and elevated levels of arsenic and other contaminants in soil. This park was a dumping ground.

The land might be valued at $300 Million? $500 Million? An acre on the Miami River is going for $100 Million. Beckham's real estate handlers want 10 acres of Museum Park? Beckham wants to pay nada. Zilch. Smells like the Marlins scam.
