The Cruise Industry Challenges the Mayor and his Minions. By Geniusofdespair

For those of you who don't get the Miami Herald:

Bullies on both sides. I love the way they say it is composed by "Concerned Citizen." Did they see David Beckhans in his underwear yet? Does anyone except the cruise lines and politicians care about the port? Not really. It is just a money losing venture with an over-paid director.

Do you think that our county commissioners and various city governments as well as state governments took note of the top 3 economic generators for our ecomony and are methodically killing them one by one at the expense of the people who live here? Tourism, the Port and Agricultural enterprise has been replaced by development and promises provided by hot shot people (and created using our wallets). I am disgusted by all of it.

Is the marine industry so bad that you have to replace it with soccer and a hotel?

ahhhh. I believe I see the obvious flaw in their logic. To believe that there will be traffic problems at the port due to a Soccer stadium... Obviously, they forgot this is America, where everybody plays soccer as a kid, but almost universally turns away from it as an adult. Now, if they were to put say, a baseball stadium, or football stadium, or even a basketball arena at or near the entrance to the Port... wait... never mind...

"Why unknot the visionary planning Miami-Dade County's leadership charted" had me throwing up a little in the back of my throat.

Centi-millionaires and billionaires can be concerned citizens too!

The Port Director may be overpaid, but the port itself is not a money loser, Genius . Highly leveraged, yes; but by no means a money loser.

I always enjoy your point of view.

Change the name of the Marlins to the Miami Port Rats.

Beckham is just the spokesmodel for a bunch of speculators who want to grab a priceless waterfront site at a steep discount.

We cant miss the opportunity to have world class soccer in Miami. Miami is an international city with a bright future... MLS is a success in New York, Los Angeles, Seatle, etc. and we should be part of that success... The stadium and the spaces around will be for the enjoyment of every person in Miami... People should take a moment and do some research in this project. This will be great for our downtown

If I'm not mistaken the port was belonged to the city of miami and was gifted to the county for how knows ! But when gifted it could only be used as a port. Therefore miami has t give approval for any variance !

All the office space downtown will be challenged by the government-subsidized, lower cost office space. I don't blame folks for being upset about that. No soccer stadium in the port.

The City of Miami did own Dodge Island. It was given to Miami-Dade County with the covenant that it may only be used for freight and transportation. Fortunately the businessmen who want free or cheap land for soccer can find better sites adjacent to highways.

yes there is a reverter clause (Port use only) on the deed providing Dodge Island property to the County from the City. City commissioners and mayor are rubbing their hands in anticipation of deed violation by the County, ready to greedily pounce and repossess. Drama ahead.

We hope City Attorney Victoria Mendez has been reading the fine print and that she is well prepared to take on Underwear Man and his NYC slicksters.

So cruise ships flying foreign flags should profit from every inch of land facing Downtown with no promise of increasing revenue to the county or even a notion of giving back to the people who actually live here?? Not something I would expect to see argued here.

Miami deserves soccer. Those of us who live, work or visit around Downtown deserve an extension of the baywalk and more public/civic spaces we can be proud of. If Commissioners cave in to money on this, it will be an embarrassment the whole world will see.

Miami deserves JUST 1% of the the Port to be used for a public space and yes, a stadium, that ONLY hosts games AFTER Cruise passengers have arrived and trucks are done for the day.

We spent how many millions on the Tunnel that won't be used in the evenings by anyone? We have an old Port Bridge that no one uses either?

Oh no, it's better for Miami that we give it away for a hotel and keep tourists from staying in the city or shopping in our local stores. That makes sense!

If the cruise ship companies, the freight companies or any of their vendors rent or use space at PortMiami we all hope they pay full market price with NO DISCOUNTS. The Port is owned by taxpayers and every tenant should pay full market price for any square inch they use. No insider deals. Listening Beckham?

The slicksters from NYC can find great sites closer to Kendall where soccer fans live. The Marlins rarely get more than 2,000 actual paying customers to show up at their $3 Bil stadium. Total failure.

April 18th in the Herald the NYC slicksters make it clear they want 36 acres of the taxpayer owned Port of Miami. Yup. 36 acres.
