Greenland and climate change: trying to make sense ... by gimleteye

Ilulissat sits at the mouth of the largest of glaciers pouring to the sea on Greenland's west coast. Having written about climate change and the impacts of sea level rise and lived in places where the impacts are clearly visible, I had not expected to be so impressed and surprised by the scale of the Kangia glacier and its melting ice.

The beauty of the landscape would stand alone as remarkable, but the climate forces at work inspire awe.

Dick Cheney coined the phrase, 'shock and awe', to describe the effects of American military power in war. But to experience real shock and awe, there is nothing mankind can do -- except perhaps the detonation of  a nuclear bomb -- that compares to the Greenland ice sheet melting into the Atlantic.

The temperature here is in the 40's. It is a far from the blistering heat engulfing most of the US. Our flight be small plane from New England was long and tiring. If you could fly directly by commercial jet , Greenland is three and a half hours away from Boston. On a small plane, a Kodiak, it took us sixteen hours over two days. The duration of the trip has an unexpected benefit of reinforcing the sense of vast scale to the triggers unleashed by our use of fossil fuels. By stretching out the length of the trip, it is both easier to link how the melting ice -- gathered over hundreds of thousands of years -- is the consequence of unleashing the energy of plant life -- in fossil fuel -- created over hundreds of millions of years.

This is a perspective that is difficult to grasp except by imagining great spaces and great lengths of time in the evolution of our species: that we have become not only the agent for conversion of energy, as though we were the phosphorous on the tip of a match, but that the match that holds us intact -- the survivability of species -- can also go up in smoke. So this is the question I wonder about as the icebergs float by my hotel room in the constant summer sun that makes quarter of eleven at night nearly as bright as quarter of eleven in the morning; is there any chance that billions of people can survive on the tip of this burning match? The icebergs don't seem to move, but they are moving. It is not just that the temperatures are excruciatingly hot: the averages are moving, too. Everything is moving with the climate, that sends scientists running to the record stretching back hundreds of millions of years for equivalents. All our references are thrown out of whack by the immensity.

A guide reports, each day the volume of water in the ice breaking off the glacier equals the volume of water consumed by New York City in an entire year. Think about that.

Here is another, more easy to grasp image: for centuries, locals have depended on dog sledding to get to frozen fishing grounds in winter. Only a few years ago, there were 5000 registered dogs in Ilulissat. After several warm winters in a row allowed fishermen to get to fishing areas by boat, the number of dogs has fallen to 2300.

I had not expected to be floored by what I've seen in Greenland, but I am.

En route to Greenland ... by gimleteye

An unexpected benefit of flying to Greenland in a small plane: experiencing the immensity of Canada.

From Augusta, Maine it is only an hour to Quebec, the frontier where French and American colonials fought for the northern section of the continent. From Quebec, through the rest of Ontario province, across Labrador and past Hudson Bay to Iqaluit: another eleven hours.

Eleven hours with only hints of human presence or economy. Logging and mining operations seem lost in a wilderness of a million lakes, streams, and rivers. For part of those eleven hours, we were out of radio contact anywhere, flying anywhere from 11,000 to 500 feet off the deck. These days, you have to go a long way to be out of radio contact. That's how remote northern Canada is. Then you arrive in the midst of the native Inuit tragedy, upsetting as any reservation for native Americans in the lower 48.

We left behind the heat wave in the northeast and, twelve hours later, to ice flows beached at low tide on Frobisher Bay, reaching for winter gear. The sun never sets in the summer this far north. At midnight, the teenagers cluster aimlessly on corners and outside bars in town.

Today, four hours across the Atlantic to Greenland. More later, internet willing.

Florida GOP to blame for popular boycott movement against state economy ... By gimleteye

If the point of an economic boycott of Florida is to waken Florida voters who empowered the radical right, Eye On Miami says, "Boycott On!"

Florida's Stand Your Ground law was passed by the GOP legislature, at the urging of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) in 2005. Stand Your Ground would not have happened without the leadership of the man who would become US Senator, Marco Rubio.

Here is the website TruthOut:

As the Center for Media and Democracy (publishers of ALECexposed.org) uncovered, ALEC adopted Stand Your Ground as a "model" for other states in early 2005, just months after the NRA pushed it through Florida's legislature (with then-state legislator Marco Rubio voting in favor). (Eye On Miami NOTE: Rubio wasn't just a state legislator. He was the majority leader of the Florida legislature, be-knighted by Jeb! Bush to cement the position of the radical right. Neither are moderates. Period. I'll return to this point, shortly.)

The NRA boasted that its lobbyist's presentation at a 2005 ALEC meeting "was well-received," and the corporations and state legislators on the Criminal Justice Task Force voted unanimously to approve the bill as an ALEC model, under the name the "Castle Doctrine Act." At the time, Wal-Mart, the nation's largest seller of rifles, was the corporate co-chair of the Task Force. Since becoming an ALEC model, twenty-six states have passed laws that contain provisions identical or similar to the ALEC legislation. ALEC called the legislation one of its "successes."

With this revelation, the spotlight turned on ALEC as never before, with the public soon becoming aware of ALEC's role in advancing an array of reactionary bills, including legislation that makes it harder to vote, criminalizes immigrants, destroys unions, protects corporations from civil liability, thwarts environmental regulations, and cuts holes in the social safety net -- all while the organization enjoys tax-exempt "charitable" status.

In response to public criticism and a campaign led by Color of Change, along with CMD, Common Cause, Progress Now and People for the American Way, at least 49 corporations, including General Motors, General Electric, Amazon.com, and Coca-Cola, have severed ties with ALEC.

Elections do have consequences, as Florida voters ought to know from the fierce battle by the radical right to counter FairDistricts, passed by more than 60 percent of Florida voters. These hardened battle lines against the will of the people are only half the problem. The other half of the problem is exemplified by the fact that even though ALEC in 2012 withdrew its support for promoting Stand Your Ground in the states, the law still stands. What this shows is that once the damage is done to laws by the radical right -- like the evisceration of environmental protections and land use planning in Florida -- recovering lost ground requires rebuilding political consensus the radical right dismantled.

Today Jeb! Bush and followers are busy re-writing both their actions fomenting the radical right and its harsh consequences. In the New York Times, Thomas P. Edsall writes in "Has the GOP gone of the deep end?",

Jeb Bush warned last year that both Ronald Reagan and his own father would have a “hard time” fitting into the contemporary Republican Party, which he described as dominated by “an orthodoxy that doesn’t allow for disagreement.”

A few months ago, Bush, who is expected to run for the party’s nomination in 2016, took it up a notch. At the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in March, Bush declared:

All too often we’re associated with being anti-everything. Way too many people believe Republicans are anti-immigrant, anti-woman, anti-science, anti-gay, anti-worker, and the list goes on and on and on. Many voters are simply unwilling to choose our candidates, even though they share our core beliefs, because those voters feel unloved, unwanted and unwelcome in our party.

Politely put, that's bullshit. The notion that Jeb! can "walk back" his record and rebrand as a "moderate" is countered by the record. He exemplified, as governor, the patriarchal, brook-no-dissent that paved the way for a take-over of the Republican Party by the radical right and Florida's race to the bottom.

Whether voters can put two and two together in Florida is a hard question to answer. Recent history is dismal on this point. Not even the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression stirred Florida voters from their lethargy. In fact, the opposite occurred: with foreclosures and economic hardship rampant, most voters in local elections seemed paralyzed by low expectations. Then, too, there has been little help from the media, especially from the Fox News politburo and its affiliates.

Let's see if a boycott against the Florida economy can move the needle, where nothing else has worked.

On Vacation...be back soon maybe. By Geniusofdespair

On vacation.

I am tired of connecting dots for all you guys. You have got to start thinking for yourselves. You keep electing toxic people and frankly it makes me want to puke. I am tired of this feeling.  I will present information but you guys have to make the change happen.  I try to warn you all, but you don't go out there and put an ounce of effort into making things right. Do you even talk to your neighbors or put out an email to friends in the district or do a facebook post? Do you do a campaign contribution? Do you call anyone at election time? What do you except read this stupid blog?

You let charlatans win and this crushes my spirit.

Fix Homestead! All of you, don't give up on this crappy city. Give me hope that the electorate has half a brain.

Note to Katherine Fernandez Rundle: If you are going to arrest Bateman DO IT NOW before the cutoff for candidates to register.

Greenland: getting hot out there ... by gimleteye

I'm making a trip to Greenland in a few days by private plane. It's a single engine turbo-prop. A grade school friend --  half a century now -- is a pilot and flying us to Ilulissat. I'm excited to be going to the frontier of sea level rise. Flying north through Maine into Canada, we will have time to think where we are headed.

One hundred fifty years ago, the gentile of Washington DC toed their boots into carriages and buggies to view the battle of the Bull Run.

The chart, above, shows the anomaly in this year's ice melt. The chart is based on real-time satellite data covering the entire Greenland ice sheet, published by the National Snow and Ice Data Center. Compared to the telescopes used by the men in their top hats and ladies in their bustles at Bull Run, we have scanning electron microscopes and computers correlating data from geosynchronous orbits hundreds of miles above the earth.

We know so much and do so much with all we know, but the survival of our species likely comes down to watching the ice melt in Greenland, between your feet.

I wonder how to advise the current generation coming to their turn managing affairs of the world. We were up to the task; the Baby Boomers. Yes, the radical right made hay on the "me generation". But the right entirely avoids the social contract, the public commons, shared responsibility for the planet, and of accounting for pollution. The right is more fixed on measuring the point of conception than creation lost to forces of greed.

We've fumbled our chances to address global warming as the international security crisis it is.

Instead, we've focused -- for one reason or another -- on the low hanging fruit. I always got the point, for example, about inculcating social responsibility through recycling, but I never understood how our generation's powerful actors -- like Bill Clinton, for instance -- could use the environment in the game of politics with the GOP like a low count card and convert to a true believer on climate change when he was out of office.

It is not like these issues -- consider Big Sugar and Clinton's affiliation with the Fanjul billionaires as one example -- were unavailable for policy changes at the time he was in the White House. And I don't mean to pick on the Democrats. How many of George HW Bush's 5000 Points of Light were awarded to environmental warriors challenging Florida's cratered natural resources or fighting fossil fuel industries?

I'm asking these questions, because I don't know how to address the younger generations.

Maybe I'm missing something. In the days before and even after the battle, Gettysburg must have been serene. The quail rustled, flushed from tall grass where they were feeding. There is no cataclysmic event in climate change. No Gettysburg or Antietam. So far, no day where the tide went high and stayed there.

My family history was shaped by a cataclysmic event -- the Holocaust -- where the banality of evil destroyed millions. The storm clouds over eastern Europe had been easily readable before the gas chambers. In other words, there were no surprises in the catastrophe that Hitler unleashed. He had plenty of help.

Despite that history is backwards-looking, its illumination traces the exact outline of where we are headed. The challenge for younger generations is to know, what is the moment we are in?

Florida considers eliminating laws altogether ... By gimleteye

In Miami we are accustomed to ridicule, but the GOP Stand Your Ground law probes new territory. The Honey Boo Boo State has something squishy in its shoes, and it ain't Chamber of Commerce sand.

Huffington Post considers whether tourists should boycott the state. "Florida and Texas, you make a lovely couple." I propose a new tourism campaign to counter the effect: Come to Florida, we are open for target practice.

For the New Yorker, Andy Borowitz writes:

FLORIDA CONSIDERS ELIMINATING LAWS ALTOGETHER

TALLAHASSEE (The Borowitz Report)—Arguing that its current system of laws is out of step with life in today’s Florida, a growing chorus of lawmakers in the state are arguing for a measure that would eliminate laws altogether.

“Florida is rife with laws that say ‘Do this, don’t do that,’ ” said Gov. Rick Scott, a supporter of the measure. “Speaking as a Floridian, I have found it exhausting pretending to obey them.”

There is broad support in the state for abolishing laws, according to a poll commissioned by the political action committee Citizens For a Lawless Florida.

According to that poll, a majority of Floridians favor ridding the state of laws, while a sizable number did not know that the state had any.

“We’ve been trying to remove laws piecemeal for the past few decades, but this measure seems like the most efficient way to take care of the whole problem,” Gov. Scott said.

For those who fear that eradicating Florida’s laws would wreak havoc on life in the state, Gov. Scott offered this reassurance: “Honestly, I don’t think you’ll notice a difference.”
I would like to see the national poll result of likely voters that asks the question: Does the "Florida Stand Your Ground Law" passed by the GOP legislature that acquitted George Zimmerman make you more or less inclined to vote for US Senator Marco Rubio in a national election?

County Government: Let Them Eat Cake Mentality. By Geniusofdespair

It is budget time, people are being laid off, libraries will close, there was even a threat of a budget boost. But the some of the Commissioners recently went globetrotting to Singapore and Europe on our dime on "Trade" missions. The Mayor should put a stop to this and they all should forgo trips paid for by others including the Mayor (see comments). It smells.

This lapse of common sense -- to take these trips with tax and special interest money during budget cut time -- amounts to Maria Antoinette saying "Let them eat cake" when learning the peasants had no bread.

More on the Octopus: Big Sugar ... by gimleteye

The Sugar industry controls more than you can imagine in Florida.
The recent disinformation public relations campaign by Big Sugar is extraordinary. (This is our second post on the topic.)

I cannot think of another instance in which a powerful special interest in Florida, outside a pending election or legislation, spent so much money through paid advertisement in media and direct mail.

Big Sugar follows the trends. Voters are not reading newspapers (or blogs). They get their information from increasingly polarized sources of information, especially the Fox News right wing juggernaut.

In doing so, Big Sugar probes the public tolerance for misinformation in ways that we can predict for future crises. For example, in the future when summer temperatures are routinely over 110 degrees, expect Big Oil and Big Coal to follow Big Sugar's example: in between news segments on emergency, extreme weather conditions, expect advertisements: it is "cooperating" in the fight to solve common environmental problems.

The latest Big Sugar ad campaigns should remind you of Big Brother, Upton Sinclair or George Orwell. The industry is probing new territory, confident that there is no resistance to counter its power.

This might also have been predicted by the near total absence of accountability for the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. In Florida, as in other parts of the nation, there has been neither a prosecution of perpetrators nor any new arrangement of economic order. All was, as before.

The PR campaign noted by the Palm Beach Post, below, represents a new front in Big Sugar's war to cement its prerogatives and power in Florida. Its ability to do so is a tacit acknowledgment of complete control, through the GOP legislature and Gov. Rick Scott.

Big Sugar's profit stream depends on control of public processes and government. And it is a war that Big Sugar's command and control PR apparatus wages in every county ringing the Everglades. In 2012, Big Sugar proved it could remove the only GOP county commissioner who favored Everglades protection, Ray Judah, without comment or consequence in broader Florida politics.

Big Sugar ads target areas affected by Lake O discharges into Indian River Lagoon
By Jonathan Mattise -Sunday, July 14, 2013

The ads touting Florida sugar farmers as environmentally friendly are only running in the two TV markets battered by Lake Okeechobee freshwater releases.

While Lake O water pours into the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee rivers, TV viewers in the West Palm Beach and Fort Myers markets are listening to the sugar industry’s positive take on its Everglades cleanup efforts. Those are the only two regions where the ads are playing, according to the media-buying agency in charge, VancoreJones Communications Inc.

One ad sponsored by the sugar industry, often criticized as a major water polluter, paints a picture of positive Everglades partnerships and cleanup progress. Among the alligators, birds, tractors and scientists pictured, a narrator echoes Gov. Rick Scott’s catch phrase, “It’s working,” before showing the governor at a bill signing.

“We thought it was important that people everywhere in Florida understand that the restoration process to this date has been very successful,” Judy Sanchez, a spokeswoman for Clewiston-based U.S. Sugar, has said about the ads.

Karl Wickstrom, coordinator of Stuart-based Rivers Coalition Defense Fund, said it’s no coincidence which audience the sugar industry is targeting.

“That’s where they are causing the most damage that is visible to the public,” Wickstrom said.

RELEASES START, ADS FOLLOW

The ads started about a month after the Army Corps of Engineers began dumping Lake O water east and west, via canals. The corps says discharges are necessary to keep a rising lake from threatening the surrounding Herbert Hoover Dike and from flooding communities to the south.

Environmental advocates contend Lake Okeechobee discharges should flow naturally south toward the Everglades, right through sugar lands. The lake water puts the lagoon and estuary at dangerously low salinity levels, and it carries phosphorous and nitrogen. The combination of factors can prove deadly for marine wildlife.

Environmentalists also contend taxpayers are footing too much of the Everglades cleanup bill, and sugar isn’t paying its fair share.

PR CAMPAIGN

The TV ad is one prong of a public relations push from sugar. Florida Sugar Farmers has mailed fliers that tout the same positive spin on the industry’s Everglades work. It’s unclear how much the group spent, or where exactly the mailers went, but they hit both the Fort Myers and Treasure Coast region.

The group also created a website, www.sugarfarmers.com, that repeats the same message.

Despite using the name Florida Sugar Farmers in the ads, the nonprofit behind the campaign is Everglades Forever Partnership Inc. The 501(c)(4) group’s official purpose, according to IRS tax forms, is to “promote welfare and common good and restoration of the Florida Everglades.”

501(c)(4)s have become the most prominent political-spending group. They don’t need to disclose their donors, and can spend unlimited money on political communications.

Everglades Forever Partnership formed in 2003 amid a political tussle over a controversial state Everglades bill. Environmentalists fought a proposal they said would have delayed stricter pollution standards in the Everglades for at least a decade.

After the bill passed, Everglades Forever Partnership mailed a flier saying, “Who can we thank for protecting our Everglades?” On the other side was a photo of the local lawmaker who supported the bill.

The group’s directors, Richard Johnston and Randy Nielsen, run Public Concepts LLC in West Palm Beach. That company has been a lucrative de facto arm of state Republican campaigns. Public Concepts raked in about $1.8 million through their work on mailers, ads, polls, consulting and more for state candidates and committees in the 2012 cycle.

1996 SUGAR AD FIGHT

In 1996, the sugar industry prominently dove into political advertising. The group Save Our Everglades managed to get three constitutional amendments aimed at the sugar industry on the ballot by petition. The most controversial would have imposed a penny-a-pound tax on sugar growers.

A week before the election, a sugar-fueled political committee peppered voters with a mailer. It said: “Can you afford a property tax increase? Amendment 4 gives politicians and bureaucrats the power to raise property taxes hundreds of millions of dollars.”

The sugar industry put about $18.9 million into the committee in 1996.

In a subsequent letter, Orlando State Attorney Lawson Lamar said: “It is my strong recommendation that no further misleading materials be distributed to the public and that a statement correcting the misinformation in this document be included in your upcoming campaign mailings or other communications with the public.”

Save Our Everglades said that recommendation was ignored. The amendment failed by an 8 percent margin on the November 1996 ballot. U.S. Sugar and Save our Everglades then traded lawsuits, which the two parties eventually dropped.

SUGAR ADS

The local-market sugar industry ads, running from early June to mid-July, also are airing on cable networks, including CNN, but those costs are harder to track.

West Palm market
Covers: Palm Beach County to north Indian River County; includes Okeechobee
Ad cost: $115,150
Affected waterways: St. Lucie River, Indian River Lagoon

Fort Myers market
Covers: Lee, Collier, DeSoto, Charlotte, Glades, Hendry counties
Ad cost: At least $64,795
Affected waterway: Caloosahatchee River

The truth about the FPL Transmission Lines and Nuclear Reactors. Guest Blog by Stoddard, Lerner and Roff

Try to go to one of these meetings, pick something from this  article to talk about:

Upcoming meetings, don't miss them! Also: Thursday, July 25, 6:30-9:00 pm, Miami Airport Convention Center, Room MACC1, 711 NW 72nd Ave

I am sitting in the administrative hearing being held in Miami from which an Administrative law judge will recommend which of the  six proposed transmission line corridors from Turkey Point nuclear power plant should be approved even before we know whether FPL will even be licensed by Nuclear Regulatory Commission to build 2 new nuclear power plants.  Significant and permanent economic and environmental harm would be done to several areas of Miami Dade County by building these lines, but then the power plants may never be built.  Sounds ass backward, doesn't it? FPL wants to build 500 kv lines either within or along the Everglades National Park , placing endangered species such as the wood stork, and our water resources in jeopardy.  Then they also want to build a 230 kv lines along the US 1 corridor, permanently destroying the economic viability for future commercial development along this Gateway to several south maim Dade cities, including Pinecrest, South Miami, Coral Gables and the southern portion of the City of Miami.

FPL is asking the Florida Department of Environmental Protection(DEP)  for approval to build monstrous  105 foot high, 4 feet wide transmission lines and poles all along the US 1 corridor, even though the utility has not been issued a license to build by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.  In fact,  there is no certainty that the two new nuclear power plants will ever be built.  Until the plant is licensed, there’s no justification for building new transmission lines. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has only issued 2 licenses in the past 40 years for new plants , one in Georgia and one in South Carolina, and Georgia has suspended their plans to go forward.

Before a NRC  license can be issued , a required Environmental Review study must be completed, and after  4 years of asking for information and data from FPL, the review has recently  been suspended for failure of FPL to provide requested information, and to be responsive to the study teams requests.

Ever since June 2009, Upon being informed that FPL had selected the US 1 corridor as their preferred route to run proposed new transmission lines, all of the cities along US 1 from Pinecrest north initially requested  that any new lines must be undergrounded, but FPL has steadfastly refused, demanding instead that the cities who were making the request for undergrounding bear the financial burden.  Their claim is that the legislature and Public Service Commission require they build as cheaply as possible and there is no legislative mandate for  underground ing.  As a result the cities have been advocating at the legislative level to require a study on the practice of underground ing be updated, as the last time the Florida legislature  studied the issue was in 2005, and the state of practice of under grounding utilities around the world has vastly improved since then.   Undergrounding the lines would be the middle-ground consensus position, but FPL refuses to agree it, even if we were to go to the legislature to mandate  in circumstances where the lines would run through high population density and commercial sectors, such as what they are proposing .  The truth is, the FPLTransmission lines in downtown Miami are undergrounded for just that reason. And the truth is , the US 1 proposed corridor is not the cheapest corridor they could have proposed.

A little history less on is in order.  The utilities rewrote the Transmission Line Siting Act in 2007 to their advantage, shifting the burden of proof from themselves, to anyone who would ( dare) oppose the location the utility determined would be their preference.   The ONLY way anyone can formally oppose a proposed preferred corridor by FPL is to file an alternate corridor, a process that is extremely costly, cost prohibitive for most, and then establish that your alternate corridor should be the preferred one by the state agencies who make those determinations.   Pinecrest and Coral Gables have filed alternate corridor proposals using existing transmission lines and rights-of-way.  These are supported by South Miami.

It's been 4 years and the municipalities have spent more than a half million dollars so far on the fight.  The FPL position is that they studied various other segments for the potential routes , but the US 1  is the best.  Exhibits 293 and 294 shows the typical transmission structures proposed and they are in fact monstrosities, that would tower far above the the US 1 corridor  marring the landscape , the vista and the economic viability as a commercial and residential corridor forever .   The existing North-South transmission line corridor, connecting Turkey Point to downtown Miami  that serves as  the backbone of the Pinecrest/ Coral Gables  alternate corridor was built 40 yrs ago when Turkey Point was built.  There have been no upgrades, or improvements provided  since that time, other than storm related repairs.  The only option for fighting the  US 1 proposed corridor  by FPL was to offer The original transmission lines, built 40 plus years ago, as our alternate corridor and our proposal requires they be made safer, higher, and modernized. otherwise the original corridor will remain, unimproved even if the new US 1 lines are built!
Industrial strength lines along US 1  will destroy the future economic viability of the entire  US 1 commercial corridor.  An economic study shows  they will do extensive damage to the local economy and tax base , and reduce current commercial property values by as much as 30% .

We are also fighting the transmission lines by opposing the Nuclear Cost Recovery Act, which FPL has used to extract $1 billion so far from the ratepayers as an additional subsidy we all pay on our monthly electric bill.  Finally after 4 years the legislature has begun to address it.  We expect the legislature will eventually suspend and prohibit early cost recovery as a funding mechanism.  We are also asking legislature to consider a new law to mandate undergrounding lines in this particular circumstance.
Two options are better for everyone:

Option 1: Underground the lines.  This Changes geometry, running lines w opposite phase close together cancels more of the magnetic field than wider spaced lines on poles. and shielding them in concrete underground is vastly safer from a health perspective.    It obviously Improves the skyline. And it does  not risk electrocuting people when lines are downed by a storm.

We do not have the laws to force FPL to underground, and cannot afford to pay the bulk of the cost. it is our position that since the new power and added lines will improve the overall grid, the cost must be borne by all of the FPL customer base who will have added power.  The other  Option  is in Re-engineering existing the existing, original corridor , to add new lines.

Existing magnetic fields can be reduced by re-engineering existing corridor and including new lines.

NEW NUCLEAR REACTORS AT TURKEY POINT – MORE PROBLEMS
There  is a growing  expense if the 2 new plants were  ever to receive a license by NRC.  The original cost projections in2007 were for $8-12 billion.   The projected costs have now skyrocketed to $20- $24 billion required to build these reactors.  That becomes cost prohibitive.   As the costs of gas powered plants and even renewable  energy come down each year, clearly  South Florida should  refocus their future  energy production toward safe and sustainable energy resources.

Nuclear waste.  All the nuclear waste is being stored on site, in a hurricane zone, subject to storm surge and sea level rise.  It will be dangerously radioactive for the next 1 million to 6 million years.

Storm surge can disable back-up power generation for too long (remember Fukushima).  And on that note, the Evacution plans that have been developed and approved by FEMA and Miami Dade county emergency management requires an evacuation plan for only a 10 mile radius from the plant .  There’s no quick way to evacuate South Florida in the event of a radiation leak, especially in the aftermath of a hurricane.  FPL’s evacuation study assumed that nobody living north of SW 152 St would attempt to evacuate following a nuclear accident.

In addition, Mayor Stoddard has met with Miami Dade County Emergency Management to discuss concerns that No effective plan exists for getting protective potassium iodide to children, young adults, and pregnant women prior to exposure from a nuclear release.   Instead of continuing the FPL needs to be decommissioning existing radiation sources before sea level rise and storms cause more widespread hazard.

FPL knows all these problems, yet chooses to ignore them and until both the legislature And the Governor change their energy and utility policies , FPL will  continue to be allowed to charge all of its rate payers  the nuclear cost recovery  to build transmission lines for other needs.    They have no financial risk since ratepayers are footing the bill.  There must be a moratorium on any further action on the siting or building of transmission lines unless and until the Nuclear Regulatory commission  grants them the license and there is a new Determination of Need conducted.

In Japan they evacuated to 50 miles. That would take us to Fort Lauderdale.

Mark Bell's Campaign Report in his Quest for Homestead Mayor. By Geniusofdespair

All the Jacksonville donations at the beginning are connected to Wayne Rosen. He has beena partner of Wayne's. I didn't seen ay Wayne Rosen donations on Steve Bateman's report. Don't vote for Mark Bell unless you want Lynda Bell holding two posts. Here is Lynda Bell's campaign report for County Commission.

Jon Burgess, be a man and register for this race. They are going to use this campaign money Lynda Bell is raising for her husband to put lipstick on a pig and Mark Bell will win. Look, Mark is even getting money from Bell's friend Palmetto Bay's vice mayor John Dubois through his corporations. Do the best thing for your city and run for Mayor. Stop being a coward, taking the safe route. Your City needs you now more than even. Steve Bateman cannot win without Rosen's money. Lynda Mark Bell will be your Mayor.

I am tired of connecting dots for all you guys. You have got to start thinking for yourselves. You keep electing toxic people and frankly it makes me want to puke. I am tired of this feeling.  I will present information but you guys have to make the change happen.  I try to warn you all, but you don't go out there and make it happen, you let charlatans win and this crushes my spirit. Gelber on Trayvon Martin, Zimmerman and the Rick Scott GOP Legislature, 'Stand Your Ground'

Former state senator Dan Gelber gets it right, even if voters don't.
http://dangelber.com/blog/view_blog.php?ID=268

From Dan's post:

Here is the actual jury instruction read to Florida juries prior to the legislature’s enactment of Stand Your Ground.
“The defendant cannot justify the use of force likely to cause death or great bodily harm unless he used every reasonable means within his power and consistent with his own safety to avoid the danger before resorting to that force.

The fact that the defendant was wrongfully attacked cannot justify his use of force likely to cause death or great bodily harm if by retreating he could have avoided the need to use that force. “
Here is the actual instruction that was read to the Zimmerman Jury:
“If George Zimmerman was not engaged in an unlawful activity and was attacked in any place where he had a right to be, he had no duty to retreat and had the right to stand his ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he reasonably believed that it was necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.”

The Pet Straw Ballot Was a Sham. By Geniusofdespair

This is what was on the ballot.

First off, it is was a non-binding straw ballot vote. Second it said the millage would be increased by .1079.  most people don't know what millage is.  It says the general fund millage will be increased by .1079.  It should have said YOUR TAXES and then people would have paid attention and you would have seen less people voting for it.  And, .1079 is meaningless to most voters.  This was not a fair ballot question. If it is non-binding, it is meaningless to base a tax increase on it.  I like dogs and cats but I don't like being manipulated. Robert's Rules of Order prohibits straw polls, calling them "meaningless and dilatory" because they subvert the deliberative charge of deliberative bodies.

Let's do it again with real numbers (this will increase your taxes by X amount a year)  and make it binding. Then we can have a fair vote.  You can't have it both ways,  you can't call it non-binding and then bind the government to the results as if it were gospel truth. And, if it were the gospel truth they wouldn't have had to hire Ron Book as their lobbyist.

High Voltage Lines, EMF, and Cancer ... by gimleteye

My home is in the US 1 corridor in Coral Gables, near to FPL's proposed high power lines. Am I concerned about EMF health hazards? Listen ...

The Winter of My Life...Looking Back. Guest Blog, Written by Peter's Friend

This is as sentimental as I get.  This is written beautifully...by Peter's friend. Peter is a very good friend of mine.

You know. . . time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams.

But, here it is... the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?

I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like.

But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey...they move slower and I see them as an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me... but, I see the great change...Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be.

And so...now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over on this earth...its over. A new adventure will begin!

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.

So, if you're not in your winter yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!!

"Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.
